wow - it's ds's first birthday! we haven't managed a party, but the banana cake is baking so I'm feeling pretty proud of myself.

No walking or talking yet, but rather bizarrely he has started whistling to himself when he is playing. It's very cute, but a bit strange.

Hope all is going well with everyone else.

Oh, and trib, could you check with your health visitor whether cow's milk contains dairy?

sfxmum · 26/05/2006 17:04

so it is! HAPPY BIRTHDAY baby lummox
hope he had a nice day, banana loaf always great

Bubbaloo · 26/05/2006 19:44

Hey thanks all. We had a great day despite horrible rainy weather. Banana cake worked (minor miracle) and the new trike from grandma is a real hit. We're meanie parents and only gave him one pressie today. Then we'll bring out the others gradually so that it isn't like a toy mountain all at once. Or at least that's the plan (I think dh has got his eye on the sticklebricks, so don't rate their chances of staying in the cupboard for long).

I'm still finding it hard to believe ds is a whole year old.

I keep thinking back to what was going on exactly a year ago - we'd just brought him home and I couldn't stop looking at him. Really, really can't believe that we're letting ourselves in for the whole newborn thing again!

tribpot · 26/05/2006 20:35

Snort lummox. I shall also check if tuna contains fish.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BABY LUMMOX, enjoy your trike!

My ds's newest cousin came to visit yesterday, all of about 3 weeks old (even his mother can't remember exactly when he was born, this is her third!). So sweet! So small! So able to be left on the sofa and not go leaping off to certain doom! How the time flies.

teabelly · 26/05/2006 21:51

Oh yes happy birthday (just!) little man Lummox Smile

Don't worry about being a meanie Lummox - we didn't buy anything for ds's first xmas and birthday, and nor did we for dd's first xmas nor will we for her 1st birthday either Shock We figure they get so many pressies from everyone else, so we just bank the money - and hopefully they'll appreciate it in 17 years time when they want to but a car Wink

Have decided to just have a small family tea for dd's birthday on friday - she won't know and as long as she gets some candles to blow out, wrapping paper to eat and a balloon she'll be happy Grin

Bresha we had a DC07 (yellow and silver one) and we loved for 3 years then the motor died on us. Turns out we should have read the instructions coz you're supposed to wash the filter (and spongy bit) every 6 months - we didn't, hence motor burn out...so I'd say they're fab if you get one but don't forget to wash the filter! Wink

lummox · 27/05/2006 09:42

[incredibly boring question alert] tea (and anyone else who can bear to answer) - are you adding the money to the trust fund thingy or have yours got their own bank accounts? Any tips for good accounts for tinies?

bresha - I'm afraid I'm someone who hated my dyson, just to confuse things! it was too heavy, went wrong twice and didn't pick up dirt very well. we've got a Henry now and it's so much better.

ooh, and you live on the Isle of Wight. We're going on holiday there this year - any tips for nice places to stay (two couples and two babies)?

sfxmum · 27/05/2006 10:11

regarding the boring stuff - lummox
after much discussion we decided, for now at least, not to add to it. she has another account, set up by grandparents which everyone adds to and her greatuncle gave her some bonds.
our biggest concern is that she can't get her hands on 'loads' of money when 18.
if she is anythig like her parents wonderlust will set in but we rather she works for it like we did

in a minute dd will go for her first bike ride in the back of dh bike while i go for a run, exciting! the silly things i like

tribpot · 27/05/2006 10:19

lummox, is your ds entitled to a trust fund in any case if he doesn't live in the UK?

We've put an initial amount into ds', a gift from his great-grandparents. The rest we'll put into a savings account that he can't get his mitts on at 18. I'm sure I would have been v dull and sensible and used mine for uni fees or similar, but dh would have spent all of his on beer and cars. Too much of a risk ds will take after his daddy!

teabelly · 27/05/2006 13:20

Lummox - we've got a separate bank account, opened the child trust fund but don't plan to add anything to it under present legislation - we just feel you don't know what changes/rules may take effect before they're 18 so we'd rather be adding to an account we're in control of iyswimSmile

SFX - hope the bike ride goes ok - I'm sure she'll have a fab time Grin

lummox · 27/05/2006 14:12

ta muchly trib, sfx and tea. trib - ds was entitled to the first payment because he was born in the UK and we didn't leave the country until afte he received it. You are entitled to keep it if you leave the country, but if we're still abroad whenever it is that the next payment is due, he won't get that.

It's the get it at 18 bit that worries me a bit. I know that I would have made much better use of money when I was a bit older. Also tea's point that the trust fund thing seems a bit structured, and we don't have any control over that structure.

Happy birthday Mr trib by the way. When's the next Junie baby birthday?

2Happy · 27/05/2006 15:39

Belated Happy Birthday lil Lummox!x
Back from bil's wedding. ds refused to sleep, he's a real nightmre when we go anywhere new nowadays - and we've got another wedding next weekend, so it'll be more of the same! gur! And we managed not to blurt out our news (despite people saying "ooh, I wonder who'll be having the next grandchild then?" er, us, as it happens...Wink). dh has now gone to bed with a hangover - he woke up still p*ssed this morning!

muma3 · 27/05/2006 17:06

dd3 is staying out tonight for the first time . she is staying at dd2 nans house with the other 2 girls . i wouldnt trust anyone else though . she still has a really runny nose and is a bit groggy but i think she is getting better. well she better for her birthday Smile

Skyler · 27/05/2006 17:18

Hi all, just popping by.
Mama3 - Glad you are moved and hope dh gets some jobs done soon.
Lummox - Happy Birthday to little Lummox. I can't believe they are one already.
We have dd2 the ELC Click clack caterpillar for her birthday and will have a little birthday tea for her and some balloons but that is all. Not until the 22nd anyway. She has done a lot more walking today so will have to get her first shoes soon. Exciting, but expensive Shock.
Right have to go and feed dd2. Amm off to my mums for half term so not around for a week.
Money - DD's have an F&C trust fund account and separate savings accounts with Halifax I think. They have some premium bonds too.
Take care all. Will chat in a week or so....

Skyler · 27/05/2006 17:19

Aww SFX she looks so cute.

tribpot · 27/05/2006 19:47

Look at her, what a sweetheart! Handknitted cardy?

teabelly · 27/05/2006 20:14

Skyler - have a fab break

SFX, love the cardy too - great pix bless her Smile

teabelly · 27/05/2006 20:15

Oh and forgot, muma have my fingers crossed you get what you want! Wink

lummox · 28/05/2006 08:43

sfx - she looks lovely. hope she enjoyed the ride.

muma3 - are you going to be able to add another name to your tattoo if it turns out you're preg? Grin

was wondering whether anyone else is finding that everyone they meet asks whether your ds/dd can walk yet? walking seems to be the new sleeping through! it's not as bad as the sleeping question because i'm not bothered about ds walking (whilst I would happily have throttled the next old lady who asked if ds was sleeping through yet when we were having sleeping problems), but it does get a bit annoying after the hundredth time.

sfxmum · 28/05/2006 08:50

morning all
cheers for my little monkeySmileshe was very amused wizzing past me while i huffed and puffed up & down the trail, she soon got bored with me and gave her attention to the ducks and the geeseShock
oh the cardy was shop bought i never managed to finish the one i started, but i can knit a mean scarf!

i spent yesterday evening watching dvd's most enjoyable, last day of freedom today will probably go running later when i will probably start getting knots in belly about work.
at least tomorrow its quiet i can text and email home as well as have a decent stab at catching up on the changes and write a few letter.

take care
