Suspicious death, suspected murder. Think there is a press conference soon.

This is so sad. I went to a lunch she did in aid of the local hospice at home / promoting her novels. She was a lovely lady and seemed genuine. Albeit I didn’t agree with her politics. Such a sad ending.

The more I think about it, the more upset I feel. An elderly woman bludgeoned to death in her own home. She must have been terrified. RIP Ann.

Given you’re an officer close to the cased should you be leaking the details on Mumsnet?

Oh give over, stop trying to be clever.
I stand by what I said, an elderly woman murdered in her home. Shocking.

FestivalOfNight · 10/07/2026 19:15

RIP Ann Widdecombe. A formidable and principled woman.

Classic MN the number of posters who can't simply express sadness but just have to get their left wing credentials out there - "I disagreed vehemently with everything she stood for" Is that really necessary?

You’ve made multiple false statements on this thread and now you’re trying to imply another poster is doing the same, even though they obviously aren’t

🙄🙄

Lucy Connolly advocated, in writing on the www, setting fire to buildings with people inside.

Quite aside from inciting racial hatred, this was a credible threat to kill. This is and has always been illegal, and there are very good reasons why people can't go around doing it.

This.

OonaStubbs · 10/07/2026 19:19

The left really need to stop crowing when right wing people die, it never turns out well for them and just turns reasonable moderate people away from the left.

JanesClinic · 10/07/2026 19:21

This is awful news. RIP Anne.

Considering there are people on SM saying that they’re glad she’s dead and they hope it was painful etc purely because their views don’t align - then I think it’s very important that people show that they can separate their political views to their humanity.

It needs to be said that it’s not only the people who followed her views that are saddened and shocked by her death.

It’s a shame you’ve felt the need to be disrespectful to the left and make it political on this thread, when so many have tried to do the complete opposite and create a place of united solidarity to give their respects and share their sadness.

Literally nobody is crowing.

Totally agree. She was a controversial figure in some areas, but she was committed to helping people, and people who met her respected her convictions, even if they didn't agree.

I live near Dartmoor and the thought that she met such a violent end, alone, is deeply upsetting.

To whom? People take delight when someone dies?

Crowing? Most people, left and right, are horrified.

Crowing? Where?

There was a lot of crowing when it first came out that she had died, before it became clear that it was a murder investigation.

Why ? Isn’t greeting the news of an elderly lady being murdered with celebration also disrespectful /

Firefly1987 · 10/07/2026 19:29

Only just seen the news on here and I turn over to BBC and they're barely covering it? At least Sky News is. BBC is useless these days, what an insult for this not to be massive news on there.

This is absolutely awful.

There’s an awful example below from a man Heather in a pp

Thegreatestoftheseislove · 10/07/2026 19:29

I was shocked to hear the news this morning. Jeremy Vine’s eulogy on Channel 5 brought me to tears. To hear now that she was allegedly murdered in cold blood by a young man is beyond shocking.

Ann was one of the last conviction politicians who loved, and did what she believed was best for her country. She was a woman of the utmost integrity, honest and truthful to a fault. She was a brilliant debater, willing to listen to opposite views, but was unwavering in what she believed to be the best thing. She did not suffer fools! Being a devoted Christian woman, her belief in ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ made her part ways with the Anglican Church when they introduced women bishops, and she converted to Catholicism.

Ann Widdecombe was an honourable woman, unique, strong, bold, fearless, true to God and her Christian Faith. She will be greeted with the words “well done my good and faithful servant”.

Thank you, Ann, for your many years of public service. It was done, not for self-serving aggrandisement or to climb the greasy political pole - but, rather, it was done from your Christian servant-heart.

BBC had it on a loop all afternoon

You are spot on. An older lady living alone and attacked by a 26 year old man is the stuff of nightmares. Truly awful.

(and just ignore the knobhead trying to bait you)

Redcrayons · 10/07/2026 19:30

This is so shocking. Her poor family.

That's good but they seem to have moved on already! If you didn't hear the news a few hours after it happened you might have missed it completely.
