Trump Trial Time - banish all memories of Mueller.
Spandauer · 13/05/2024 12:20

It's Michael Cohen day.

Summary from Washington Post:
The most anticipated witness in the case — Trump’s former attorney and fixer who arranged the hush money payment to Stormy Daniels — is expected to take the stand on Monday. Prosecutors likely need Cohen to show that Trump was directly involved in falsifying business records to keep secret a $130,000 hush money payment made to Daniels in 2016, which previous witnesses have not yet decisively done.

The cross-examination could get heated as Trump’s attorneys attempt to show the jury that Cohen, who pleaded guilty to making false statements in a separate case, is a liar seeking revenge on his former boss.

Prosecutors said they could finish presenting their case as early as this week. In addition to Cohen, they plan to call one other witness. After that, the defense can bring in any witnesses it wants to question before closing arguments begin.

@Errolwasahero - I've not been watching the US news channels and only know of the MSNBC Lawrence guy from the West Wing tv show!
I'm not sure why he was so focused on the "orange turd" bit of Stormy Daniels's testimony! I really began to feel like I couldn't listen to him repeatedly saying that phrase and I'm no prude! But he certainly got his point across 😆

But welcome to the thread! 😄

It's Michael Cohen day.

Are there cards for that ? Or at least a lapel badge ?

"Happy Michael Cohen day !"
"Fuck you too !"

😆

Well, if he's instrumental in flushing the "OT" down then it may become a Public Holiday.

@Spandauer yeah I did feel he over-egged the pudding just a tad! But I think he was incredulous that it was the OT’s own lawyer who kept on at it 🤣. I’ve wondered if she’s actually a plant…

prettybird · 14/05/2024 22:11

They keep on saying that Michael Cohen is a well-known perjurer so can't be believed.

Didn't he [check notes] get convicted of perjury for lying in congressional testimony on behalf of Trump Confused?

BruceAndNosh · 15/05/2024 06:09

It's not like Trump is famous for telling the truth

Spandauer · 15/05/2024 08:10

Pundits seem to think that Hope Hicks and Stormy Daniels (and David Pecker to some extent) have already described and/or validated most of what Cohen has testified or will be asked about by the defence team.

In particular, Hope Hicks's testimony may end up being the most damming... which is very satisfying!

Loving Biden's challenge to Trump to set a date for debate...
"I hear you're free on Wednesdays"

BruceAndNosh · 17/05/2024 10:40

Cohen's cross by the defence did not help the prosecution case of trying to present him as a reliable witness since it was basically a list of "all the times I lied"

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/05/2024 11:51

"All the times I lied for the benefit and at the behest of Donald Trump".

I don't think it can be denied that he has lied, because in effect he was sent to prison for lying (that's what most fraud amounts to, in essence). So the prosecution can't pretend about it. What they can do is emphasise why he lied, whom he lied for, who gained from his lies.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 17/05/2024 18:29

Unfortunately I am not subscribed to the Washington Post (and they don't seem to accept sterling, so I am unlikely to be any time soon) but if Trump's lawyers did not manage to "catch" any lie told by Cohen they are even less competent than anyone thought they were.

Link to Washington Post article - Think this share token should work. 🤞🏻

Thank you! Yes, I can read that. (But after The Archers.)

BruceAndNosh · 21/05/2024 07:17

Looks like Trump isn't going to testify, what a surprise.

I'm worried about cohen's testimony - he admitted to lying under oath multiple times yet the jury are expected to believe that THIS time he's being truthful

Spandauer · 21/05/2024 08:28

Not over till the fat orange lardarse lady sings... but it would be a huge surprise if he did suddenly appear in the witness box.

Difficult to decide about Cohen. He's the prosecution's main witness but possibly the least credible because of his known character and dodgy past behaviour.

Yesterday, Judge Merchan lost his cool with a defense witness (Costello - one of Trump's long time pet lawyers who had dealings with Michael Cohen). Costello was disrespectful and dismissive of Merchan to his face! Unbelievable how entitled and up themselves these Trump minions are.

The defense should finish today and there's no court Weds or Friday this week and then more delays to come because of the holiday weekend in the US - so the jury probably won't retire until next week.

I can't see the jury being unanimous in their decisions on all the charges but maybe they will fully agree on some of the them. Just a couple of counts of guilty would be enough for me!

This was discussed in a youtube vid I watched, they commentator said it's pretty much binary - all or nothing.
The 34 counts refer to 34 entries in the Trump accounts, if the jury decide one is fraudulent, pretty much all of them are. But some jurors will agree will all counts, but one might disagree on all counts

Ah! I suspected that must be the case - I was wondering how they had 34 'different' counts for what appeared to be one crime.
Oh well... 😔

I wonder what - if anything - the jury will make of Trump NOT testifying.
Will the judge instruct them that they shouldn't read anything negative into it?

TheABC · 21/05/2024 20:11

So the agreement is that unless it's unanimous, Trump will get away with it?

TheABC · 21/05/2024 20:11

That is so wrong. I cannot for the life of me understand how he has got away with this and is still getting away with it. The overturning of Roe v Wade is the worst thing he's done in my book, but there is so much, much, much, more he has ruined for everybody who is not a MAGA gun-toter or an Evangelical Christian. Terrible, terrible, evil man.
I'm sorry, I know I've said this before. I just can't believe it is still going on and he may well be elected again. Talk about a Dystopian nightmare.
