This thing about presidents and immunity. Surely it is not expected that a president might be so corrupt that he would need immunity? This is all trumped-up nonsense and I'm furious about what it means, both to the American Constitution (which seems to me to be corrupted beyond repair, thanks to you-know-who) and the rest of the world.
😡😡😡😡😡

I'd not heard of this guy (I don't think) but very interesting article. I do fear a "Black Swan event" this time that will work in Trump's favour, but fervently hope that Lichtman is correct in calling it for Biden.

Would be interested to see his analysis of UK elections!

‘A lot would have to go wrong for Biden to lose’: can Allan Lichtman predict the 2024 election?

Donald Trump seeks advice from an old friend as the Stormy Daniels hush money trial gets underway.

Spandauer · 28/04/2024 12:35

Teeny, tiny violin.🎻

Two weeks in, the first criminal trial of a former president has been personally taxing for Trump and disruptive to his campaign. Despite efforts to schedule dinners where donors, friends and world leaders join him, Trump’s moods are worse on trial days, according to several people close to him. The former president is accustomed to near-daily rounds of golf, “constant stimulation” and cheers when he enters and exits a room at Mar-a-Lago, they said. Instead, he is now reporting four days a week for mundane court arguments and long stretches without permission to check his phone. “The phrase around here is ‘the process is the punishment,’” said one person close to Trump, who like others spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations.
.....
Next week, Trump is planning to squeeze two rallies — in Michigan and Wisconsin — into his off day. His team was angered that the judge chose Wednesday as the day off — believing it was meant to hurt him politically. He has trekked to his club in Westchester to play golf on the days he has been off, instead of hitting the trail.

Come on now, this is surely a joke from the Washington Post:
"The former president is accustomed to near-daily rounds of golf, “constant stimulation” and cheers when he enters and exits a room at Mar-a-Lago, they said."
Reminiscent of some tin-pot dictator of a small, poor, country.

BruceAndNosh · 29/04/2024 10:16

Near daily rounds of golf using a buggy which he drives on the green. (For non golfers, most people would get thrown off the course for doing this but he owns the club...)
His golf provides very little exercise, but the rest of that bit from WaPo is correct- Trump is so used to surrounding himself with yes men, rallies where he is adored, and Maralago guests who brown nose. He finds it hard to accept that loads of us can't stand him.
Jesse Watters practically said that confining him to the courtroom is desgned to drain all his energy

Spandauer · 29/04/2024 10:36

No court session today (AFAIK) so he'll be able to drive his fat arse around the golf green.

Interesting to look at Fox "News" website to see how minimal the coverage of Trump Trial is

Not a joke. It's been mentioned in the media quite often. I assume they have a 'plant' sitting somewhere who starts applauding the minute he walks in/out. It's soooo The Emperor's New Clothes. Fake applause to go along with 'fake news'.

Either that or one of those big flashing 'applause' signs they use for TV shows.

I can think of nothing worse than paying for an expensive meal and having Don playing his favourite songs at a volume you can’t hear yourself talk. Mind you I suppose it stops you having to listen to him talk.

Back in court today.

Apparently son, Eric, has turned up to support his dear old Da' and sitting in front row of the gallery. First family member to show their face I think.

Judge has found Trump in contempt of court for breaking the gag order based on evidence presented at last week's hearing.

“The court finds the people have met their burden of proof and have demonstrated contempt. Mr. Trump is fined $1,000 on each of those two,” Justice Juan Merchan said in his written decision, referring to one set of alleged gag order violations.

Judge has also given Trump the day off on May 17th so he can attend Barron's graduation.

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/04/2024 15:06

He’s now been fined a total $9,000 for 9 breaches. And been threatened with jail if he breaches it again.

Which he will because he can’t stop himself.

DuncinToffee · 30/04/2024 15:42

Judge Merchan threatens Trump with jail time for further violations of his gag order.

"Defendant is hereby warned that the Court will not tolerate continued willful violations of its lawful orders and that if necessary and appropriate under the circumstances, it will impose an incarceratory punishment."

DuncinToffee · 30/04/2024 16:01

He got fined for his gag order violations

On #2 and 3 in the first motion: the court finds that the People have met their burden and Trump is fined $1000 for each of those.

#4-10 in the second motion: the court finds that the People have also met their burden and Trump is fined $1000 for each of those.

Looks like he has to take the relevant posts down by 2.15ET today. How lucky do you think Blanche will be getting that to happen. Or getting it to happen without a new post breaching the gag order.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 30/04/2024 17:23

Is there a time limit by when he has to pay any fines? If he doesn't pay any fines, could he go straight to jail till well after the election?
