Assuming Kamala gets the nom, I am going to LOVE hearing her debate Trump. Assuming Trump doesn't chicken out, that is.

Trump won't want to debate Harris, she's far too much eloquent and clever for him. He'll say he only agreed to debate Biden.
Or else he'll have a touch of convenient Covid (even if though he didn't mind turning up in 2016 despite testing positive...)

BruceAndNosh · 21/07/2024 21:42

Interesting that there was not a mention of abortion restrictions onstage at the RNC. They've clearly realised that it's not a vote winner

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/07/2024 21:47

Surely they would need to be incredibly dim not to have noticed what happened to their party's vote shortly after Roe v Wade was overturned?

It's still their policy but they don't want to talk about it!
Trump flip flops around the subject saying it's up to each State like it's nothing to do with him.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/07/2024 21:56

As dim as Trump, who went on boasting about having overturned it when nobody else had been able to do that until he did it....

BruceAndNosh · 21/07/2024 22:05

I wonder what puerile nickname Trump will coin for Harris. I don't think he's got one apart from pronouncing her first name wrongly

CaveMum · 21/07/2024 22:20

Just finished the emergency pod - highly recommend catching up with it.

Trump will be fizzing that the Democrats have stolen the news cycle from him. Grin

Of course, now TRUMP is the oldest nominee for president in history! And one who is several sandwiches short of a picnic...

Yes, this is the silver lining in the cloud of Biden having left it so late to stand down that the Democrats are going to struggle hard to win against Trump.

Bear with me, if you don't mind, whilst I wander and try to make sense of what I'm thinking. The theories I'm reading go: Trump beat Clinton in 2016, because she was a woman, even though she was white, so that means Harris (or Obama, though I'm afraid that's a non-starter) as a black woman, has absolutely no chance against Trump this time round. But Trump had been untried as a President in 2016: surely, in 2020, enough sentient people of voting age are aware of the damage he has done to the country already and of the damage he intends to do if he is elected dictator, that they won't be giving him a chance this time? Or am I giving too much credit to the floating voters and the "good" Republicans?

Spandauer · 22/07/2024 08:38

Well, he can fuck off.

Sen. Joe Manchin III (I-W.Va.) is considering re-registering as a Democrat to compete for the party’s presidential nomination in the wake of President Biden’s announcement Sunday that he will exit the campaign, according to a Manchin adviser.

This is where it could get messy. But given the shadiness of Trump using money from God knows where, it is of course the usual hypocrisy from the Republicans we know and love.

Within hours of Biden announcing his decision, the committee tried to make the handoff to Harris official — submitting an amended filing to the FEC changing its name to “Harris for President.”

Several campaign finance lawyers aligned with Republicans argue that the campaign does not have legal authority to do that — and that the maneuver is all but certain to be challenged before the FEC or in a court of law.

Charlie Spies, a prominent GOP campaign finance lawyer, said that both Biden and Harris would have to have been officially nominated by the Democratic Party at its convention next month before any kind of handoff could occur. In that situation, he noted, a provision in campaign finance law allows a vice-presidential nominee to take control of the campaign’s depository if the presidential nominee withdraws. (WaPo)

There's also a worry in the small print of how various states run their elections. There's at least one that apparently requires the name of the nominee in July.
Plus there will be State Election Officials who will try to muddy the waters by trying to put Biden's name on the ballot rather than Harris (or whoever)

Independents and floating voters may consider Harris to be the better choice now, whilst probably still holding their noses when they vote. But the hurdle of "woman" and "not white" will be a huge issue for many I fear, even taking into account Trump's track record as President. Memories are short unless you're someone who was directly affected by his corrupt government and as he's permanently surrounded by a cacophony of disruptive noise, I think people will just accept it's part of the 'deal' with him and tune it out.

For a secular state, the reliance on God in the US is medieval IMO - but then I'm of the mind that religion is the root of all evil.

I'm sorry, just realised I typed 2020 instead of 2024 in my post at 07:07 this morning.
As an interested outsider, I cannot for the life of me understand Trump's continuing popularity, but of course, you are right in that he has God on his side, @Spandauer.

I suspect (when the lawyers get there) that despite the handwringing and caterwauling, there is a route through all states to change the candidate.

Otherwise you could have the situation where a suddenly deceased candidate cannot be removed from the ballot, but be elected.

If you are going to play the "we do everything to a timetable set in the constitution" game, the rules need to be there - even if you've never needed them.

from Washington Post just now.

The Democratic National Convention’s rules committee called a Wednesday meeting to discuss the process for picking a new presidential nominee after President Biden ended his reelection campaign. The 2 p.m. meeting will be broadcast live on the Democratic National Committee’s YouTube page. DNC Chair Jaime Harrison promised Sunday that the process would be “transparent and orderly.”

And this.
So doesn't look like an alternative candidate will be put forward. But based on the last 6 months of politics on both sides of the 'pond' I'd never say never!

Chairs for the 57 state parties and territories met Sunday evening and voted to endorse Vice President Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president.

“Almost 15 million Democrats have already voted for Vice President Harris as a member of the Democratic ticket,” a statement from the Association of State Democratic Committees said. “As President Biden’s partner in the White House, Vice President Harris has been a cornerstone of this administration’s extraordinary successes, and she is the most qualified candidate to continue that legacy and serve as president.”
The statement said that no one voted in opposition. A handful abstained because their states’ parties don’t allow endorsement from chairs.

So he's a tad rattled I think. Good.

Donald Trump is already trying to change the host of the previously scheduled September debate against President Biden. In a post on his social media site, Truth Social, Trump said that “the Debate, with whomever the Radical Left Democrats choose, should be held on FoxNews, rather than very biased ABC.”
The ABC News-hosted debate is scheduled for Sept. 10.

Donald Trump continued railing against President Biden for abruptly dropping out of the race, posting on his social media platform early Monday that those who urged Biden to step down “stole the race from Biden after he won it in the primaries.”
“These people are the real THREAT TO DEMOCRACY!” Trump wrote.

Could it be, for all his bigly brain, Trump hadn't covered the possibility that the candidate he has been accusing of being old and past for 4 years it might just drop out ?

CaveMum · 22/07/2024 12:42

The fact that Trump can no longer use the age argument will really annoy him, particularly when everything he previously said can now be applied to him!

According to Mooch there may already be trouble in paradise with Trump and Vance - Trump doesn’t like anyone stealing his limelight or appearing to be smarter than him (though let’s face it, that’s not hard!) and the fact that people are saying how presidential Vance sounded in his VP nomination acceptance speech has not gone down well.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 22/07/2024 13:14

I honestly wouldn't put it past Trump to have a hissy fit at a crucial point and decide he won't stand after all and that will serve everyone right. Or is that wishful thinking?
