Is this #132?
Still trying to rid the world of this troublesome twat.

I'm dipping in and out because things are just so crazy here right now that my mind is flitting from twig to twig like a panicking goldfinch on high alert. One minute I'm thinking "Stay the course, Joe can do the job" then "Keep Joe, then Article 25 him if needed" then "Biden should step down" followed by "But who is electable in his place?".

This is a terrifying time. I'm afraid that Joe's apparent/perceived 'fragility' + Trump's now being a 'sainted martyr' to the right because he was grazed on the ear may mean that the election is lost. The supposed 'sympathy bump' in his popularity may not have truly materialized in the polls, but I have a feeling that a lot of formerly disaffected voters may silently rush to his side and secretly vote for him. Add to that the voters who would normally have voted for Biden that are saying 'I'm not voting at all, neither candidate is qualified' despite us continually intoning "Not voting for Biden is voting for Trump" until the cows come home, and you have a perfect storm, just like 2016.

IMHO there really is no candidate with the following needed to replace Biden. There are qualified 'potentials' who people might vote for, but not one single one who would get enough votes to be elected.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/07/2024 17:08

Take heart: the right (who were going to vote for him anyway) are loud in their support for Trump's "martyrdom", but has his shaving-cut really brought a single independent voter over to his side?

I'd say that his subsequent anti-Democrat rants, after his touching appeal to be less adversarial as written by his advisors, have probably lost him more votes than he gained by pretending moderation.

And I don't think there is a candidate who would a] take the job at this late stage in the game, rather than start to work towards 2028, and b] polls better than Biden against Trump. Even if they could get onto the ballot after the primaries are over, which in some states I have a feeling they couldn't. So it seems likely that option is a non-starter.

And after all, what has actually changed? Biden has still done a cracking job as President and helped a shedload of people, same as he had this time last month.... and Trump is still demonstrably deranged, suffering from word-blindness and an inability to remember names reliably, and continues to be unfit for office....

Seems there is a truckload of unintended consequences from Judge Loose Cannons flash of brilliance. The main one being that it will lead to the whole documents case being retried from the get go. Along with the Hunter Biden case being potentially quashed.

prettybird · 21/07/2024 18:54

Biden has pulled out.

Biden has pulled out.

Damn. Now we are sure to get Trump. Bye bye world, it was nice knowing you.

crumblingschools · 21/07/2024 19:06

But with Biden in surely you were going to get Trump

Interesting & (tentatively) positive article - thanks for sharing it.

Spandauer · 21/07/2024 19:08

Biden has withdrawn from candidacy.

Ah! Cross post.
Don't know how I feel now it's happening.

Shiny new object it is then.

And so it begins. Or ends, depending on how you feel about things.

No idea where we go from here. Other than a GOP feeding frenzy on the Dem party

Biden's statement.

prettybird · 21/07/2024 19:21

He's endorsed Kamala.

Spandauer · 21/07/2024 19:22

I hope the Dems come together quickly and with purpose. Any infighting will be even more damaging.

Given that the only thing they seem to have united on has been ignoring the wishes of everyone in their party who voted in the primaries, as Whoopi Goldberg recently said, I shan't hold my breath waiting for that one.

prettybird · 21/07/2024 19:21

He's endorsed Kamala.

Absolutely no surprise.

She has our votes, but my concern is that in order to beat Trump she'll need votes from disaffected GOPs and Independents. I'm not sure a lot of them are ready for, not only a female POTUS, but a non-white female POTUS.

Assuming Kamala gets the nom, I am going to LOVE hearing her debate Trump. Assuming Trump doesn't chicken out, that is.

bluecomputerscreen · 21/07/2024 19:48

some of my family in the us are, sadly, of the 'anyone but a woman' mindset. the younger ones are more open. and the couple of teens have registered to vote for the first time <hopeful>

but I really like kamala. she's got balls.

good luck to her!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/07/2024 20:01

If Kamala makes it to being the first woman POTUS I will be absolutely delighted because I think she is terrific; it's just that I fear it won't happen. Too many misogynist bigots will be saying No. (And talking bullshit about the risk of her starting a nuclear war because she has PMT, no doubt, even though she is sixty this year and probably doesn't suffer that, much.)

TheABC · 21/07/2024 20:01

It depends on who they choose. Biden was looking increasingly frail and I was not sure he would make it through to November, let alone another 4 years of high pressure politics. Whoever replaces him will be younger, sharper and have less baggage than Trump. Its going to come down to the swing voters.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 21/07/2024 20:03

It was always going to come down to the swing voters! Isn't that generally the case, anyway? Neither party has a national majority made up of just party members.

Zonder · 21/07/2024 20:29

Kamala is the antidote to Project 25

CaveMum · 21/07/2024 20:29

According to TRIP US this election will come down to about 600,000 in the swing states.

I’m waiting on the emergency pod that should be coming our way shortly.
