I've got a lovely new friend, we have children the same age and they get on fabulously. My friend is a Jehovah's Witness. I understand she will not celebrate Christmas or birthdays but I'm nervous about offending her. For example, would it be weird to invite her to my house that's a Christmas grotto? How do I not leave her children out when DD gives out little gifts to her classmates at Christmas?

@Annony331

You haven't answered my question.

And do you accept that they only change that rule after many years of campaigning by ex witnesses and outside agencies and then the final nail in the coffin was the Royal Commission.
Or do you not know about any of that? You probably accept the GB line that after careful consideration and prayer bla bla bla they decided to change it

Tell her you're a blood donor

Hi there,

I have many JW friends and work and have worked with a few. Really kind lovely people that do their best to imitate Jesus example. They preach because Jesus said it would be an identifying mark of his followers, also they believe the biggest two commandments are to love God and fellow man. They have high standards because those are found in the Bible. If members don’t repent of ‘grave’ sins like adultery they’re removed from being a JW.

JW is also a very well known mainstream religion not a cult and in no way dangerous, probably more annoying than anything else with the knocking on doors.

Shocking amount of lies and hate, mud slinging and very wrong information - seems unhinged!

JW is considered a cult by the RC church, and the activities of the JW cult are banned in several countries, including most Muslim countries.

It is well known, but it is not mainstream, and because it is not Trinitarian (denies Jesus Christ is God), it is not considered Christian. Christianity in all its forms is defined at a very basic level by acknowledgement of and faith in the Trinity.

As you probably well know.

My best friend at secondary school was a JW. At no point ever did she say anything about her faith unless I asked her about it. She never tried to convert me.

Was it connected to the poster that accidentally outed the true nature of their beliefs and has now been removed from the thread?

It was Horrace 's post addressed to Willow0 , where she found it strange to have so many JW friends, not being one herself/being a poster girl for them.

I also pointed out how timely Willow0's arrival was since the OP seemed to have disappeared.

BunnyLake · 06/12/2024 18:20

I knew someone who left JW and his parents disowned him. He hated everything JW stood for.

No surprise they've now gone too, they showed what they really were with their last post.

I agree, it is hate speech and it's not acceptable

Wait till you meet someone who has been disfellowshipped before you talk about hate speech, OP.

TheShellBeach · 06/12/2024 18:29

cantthinkofausername26 · 06/12/2024 10:15

You're utterly bonkers. I hope you get help soon. I'm leaving this thread now because the hate is making me feel sick. I'd rather have my children interact with JW than some of you with your vile opinions. I hope your children grow up with an open mind and not prejudiced like their parents.

This OP is not posting honestly on this thread IMO.

She's very likely a JW herself.

This made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣

Because it's so true

I was at uni with a JW, and she wasn't really into it but her parents didn't shun her.

Not yours, Horrace , it was mine that has been deleted, which was quoting one of yours. No clue why.

Ah OK

It gets confusing with all the quoting 😁.

But I never get why half the stuff on MN gets deleted. It's all anonymous and way too many people being offended by a different opinion to their own.
It's ok to be outraged. But never offended and deleted. It's just words.

As someone that grew up with a parent that was jehovah's witness, I am very surprised that they are friends with you, because that religion teaches that you are part of the world and you are not supposed to be part of the world.
In many respects, I would say jehovah's witnesses are in a cult

same with any religion, people pick and choose, which basically gives half an effot to the religion or what they suppose to belief in

plus you try to learn the rules and even then its all at an admins whim

My best friend at secondary school was a JW. At no point ever did she say anything about her faith unless I asked her about it. She never tried to convert me.

She was probably embarrassed by it. Most of us were all the way through school and dreaded anyone asking us about it.

Why aren't you in assembly?
Why aren't you in R.E.?
Why aren't you coming to the school disco?
Why aren't you in the school production?
Why aren't you joining the netball team?
Why aren't you coming to Julie's birthday?
Why aren't you making Christmas cards?
Why aren't you doing the nativity with us?
Why aren't you dressed up for St David's, St Patrick's Day?

And the list goes on

It shouldn't, but that makes me feel a bit better, thank you.

It's just annoying not to be able to work out an even remotely possible reason.

LessonsinChemistryandLove · 06/12/2024 18:48

I’ve had a few JW friends over the years, never had an issue tbh. Much like with Catholic and Muslim friends, some are more strict than others which can cause issues. Aside from the annoying door knocking, I didn’t know they were so generally disliked tbh!

The worst for me was ‘What did you get for Christmas’. I used to lie about fictional presents.

Ah well, that's because they're a cult, not a religion.

sometimes and ive been here years, what the rules say and what actually happens are 2 different things its like if someone responded to an op eg wanting factual advice and one poster posts one answer using eg Ai to help rather than admins being grateful that the person was not trolling, name-calling, derailing etc instead they would rather ban the poster usng Ai and say its spam, but when you look up the dictionary version of spam, it is no way near it, so it seems the whole rules list is interpretation

StMarie4me · 06/12/2024 18:57

@cantthinkofausername26 I can assure you it's fact.

Absolute fact.

But you do you obviously. I'd just be less rude of you want to be anyone's friend.

Horrace · 06/12/2024 19:01

@Tealeavesinthecup

I was too scared to make things up because Jehovah was always watching 😡

There were no Muslim or Jewish kids in my school. I was the only kid that didn't partake in anything so it was just awful.

I think it might be a tad easier for the JW kids at school now. They have relaxed some of their rules 'Nooooo Light'
And less door knocking so not the fear of knocking on there friends houses.
Plus there are a lot more religions in schools now where other kids might not be celebrating Christmas. But those other religions still probably join in birthdays, mothers day and sports clubs etc. So again, not as nuts as witnesses
