Have to confess that I won't be around much though.. we're leading a three day retreat for our youth leaders from tomorrow, and on Saturday we're moving back to the UK!

thegreenheartofmanyroundabouts · 17/08/2014 21:57

Oh chat!

I'm just back from holiday so still trying to find stuff that was there two weeks ago and has disappeared in the pile on my desk. Hoping to have a quiet August to catch up on stuff. A living museum sounds fascinating. Hope the move to the UK goes well. The weather is back to cold and wet which is normal for August so pack your thermals!

Had a most amazing evening tonight. I had seen on FB that Canon Andrew White (The Vicar of Baghdad) was speaking at a church in Bedford. Now, Bedford is not far away but totally unattainable by public transport on a Sunday. So I rang round a few people, put a message on FB, but no luck. Finally one last try and she was as keen to go as I was.

We didn't like the worship bit, too noisy, too repetitive, but Andrew White, amazing. Very different from what I expected, very funny, in spite of all the tragedy that is happening there. We especially prayed for the children, there is a true slaughter of the innocents going on at the moment. There were a few Spanish people sitting near us and they prayed in Spanish, very moving.

madhairday · 17/08/2014 22:27

Oh yay, great to see this thread revived. On phone so can't talk much but the museum thing sounds amazing! Great to hear from you nickel and glad stuff is going good.

Million didn't know you were coming back to the UK - hope it all goes smoothly, whereabouts are you coming back to?

Waves to green :)

Also just back from holiday so v disorganised and not well either so the place is a tip. D's has his friend sleeping over tonight so not much sleep in the offing. ..

madhairday · 17/08/2014 22:30

Wow oma, sounds amazing, I'd love to hear him. Read his latest blog post yesterday and was weeping. I suspect I'd have enjoyed that worship Wink but glad the evening was good. Looking forward to next Saturday all being well - who is going? Is anyone around who could pick me up from the station? Don't mind getting taxi if not.

DontstepontheMomeRaths · 17/08/2014 23:31

That sounded amazing Oma.

PositiveAttitude · 18/08/2014 08:08

Hi everyone. Smile I am not very good with Chat threads as I can't keep up often, but just thought I would pop in and say Hi and I will try to be better at keeping up and joining in.

Thanksamillion Remember me? Are you pleased to be moving back to the UK? I hope things have been going well for you.

nickelbabe · 18/08/2014 17:19

yeay! you all came Grin

see how muxh everyone's been up to!

oma your evenjng sounds wonderful - shame about the worship bit. :( also about the children.

I can't believe i'd forgotten about nextvweekend. I feel really bad because I hoped to try. we've got a choir wedding on Saturday which we didn't know anout until yesterday, so I might hsve had to cancel anyway.
I'm sorry, I'm really unreliable for non-routine things :(

I knew milly was coming (that's if I've got my rl people names joined up correctly with mn nicknames, otherwise it's someone completely different that's coming here ... Blush )

Nickel said she couldn't wait for an account of the evening with Canon Andrew White, so I thought I would put it on here rather than in a personal message

Very difficult to give an account of what Andrew White said. He speaks in quite a slow voice (suffers with ms, but I don't know whether that is the reason). He left to have a meeting at 10 Downing Street and with Radio 4 for an interview on This Morning. I must check up on what he said there.
He said that nobody had asked him what they should do about Iraq. He was very worried about the children who seem to be attacked more by ISIS than before. There are not so much orphans as families that have lost children. He asked us to pray for Protection, Provision and Perseverance, for the children as well as for the adults. He said that his family had never been worried about him being there until about 4 weeks ago. Now they think that when he goes he might not come back again. Asked whether his life had ever been threatened he said that he always had to have a pot of money at hand as that was the only way you could deal with it when you were threatened by a big pistol. "They are always very big," he said.
The people in Baghdad call him 'daddy', some children had asked him for toys. In the past four weeks it had become so much worse.
He told the story of a man who had come to him because his daughter was sick and he had told him to go home and say "Jesua, (Jesus) Jesua", all the way home which the man had done, but when he got home he was told the girl had died. He still carried on calling out "Jesua, Jesua" and the girl had come back to life. So we all clapped and cheered and he said "Hang on, I've not finished yet". He then carried on to relate how she had said she was hungry and how people had been amazed at that. And then, to everybody's delight he said: "Don't worry, it's happened before". Just amazing. We were there from seven till nine, then he had to leave.

He didn't tell any gruesome stories, although he said there were many to tell. I hope he got a good response to the collection that was taken. There were about 750 people there.

Hi all! I'm still muddling along. Canon Andrew White sounds amazing. Have a great time next weekend. I wish I could have been there but it is just too far away.

Dutchoma · 18/08/2014 21:11

Bluetinkerbell · 19/08/2014 08:29

Dutchoma · 19/08/2014 08:54

Congratulations Blue

nickelbabe · 19/08/2014 18:25

yeay! internet Grin

I got a Facebook pm from pandag saying she can't get on mn, so can't pop in for a while.

now, what was my most exciting news?
oh, yes, we might be getting a new choirmaster Grin
a lady who recently joined our congregation (recently, I can't remember how long she's been here, maybe a year? maybe less?). anyway, we heard her singing and have all asked her separately if she'd join the choir.
shr always said no. we knew she was a music teacher so just assumed she didn't want to add it to her life.
not so! found out during the week (from the horse's mouth) that she was actually looking a choir to run and assumed we were okay because we had our two organists and were doing quite well.
well, I got ratger excited and gushed a bit about how dh hates being choirmaster, so she came to talk to him on Sunday and she's going to "join" the choir to check us out, with a view to being choirmaster if we all get on Grin
it would be dh as organist would be director of music (so final say if push came to shove) but she, dh and asst organist would be equal as a team day-to-day.

That's really exciting nickel, hope all goes well and she decides to take it on! :)

Dutchoma · 19/08/2014 18:56

That's exciting news Nickel. Do you think she will like the same music as you (lot) do or will she try and be 'more contemporary'?
