it's the one we had, so it would be super cool if you had it too :)

I shall talk to the organist and see what they suggest - no point getting them to learn something brand new when they might like to give an old favourite an airing! My main aim for this wedding is that it will be a happy event. The last few years have been absolute hell, we need a bit of levity and celebration iyswim :)

nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 20:17

ah, but you have to say first "I like this what do you think? do you know it? if not, what do you think will work?"
mainly because organists are so used to trad b and a that they resign themselves to it even thiugh they'd love to do something else.
if you say what you already like, and they can't play it, then at least they know a) that you've got some musical taste and b) that they're not wasting their time suggesting sonething if you're just going to go for the mendelssohn/wagner Grin

I'm just asking dh what ge'd prefer couples to ask him...

he's said that he'd prefer a couple to say "I've got some ideas do you know them? if not, what do you think would work?"

he likes your choices so far. thinks the mozart is nice for your entry.

he also said what do yiu think about widor's toccata? (bearing mind that Baroque said it's only wirth asking for if the organist knows it, is a good organist and it's a good organ. the organ and organist at my niece's wedding this month would have made a proper pig's ear of the toccata.
definitely listen to them play before you talk to them, and get them to give you a demo of pieces they might suggest.

Hello all, nice to hear your news and catch up a little.

Congrats Purple!

Nickel I think it's me that you have seen on fb. We're coming back on Saturday and DH is going to be a lecturer at Redcliffe College which is where we were for two years before coming out here (as students). All very exciting but the last few months have been rather stressful as we've had our full summer programme (we finished that today!) with teams here and holiday clubs galore, as well as trying to sell/buy a house and get the DCs into schools. It's almost come together although the house purchase isn't done yet.

I'm slightly apprehensive as we are going to see the house on Tuesday and it will be the first time DH has seen it! We're too far along the process to back out if he really doesn't like it...

PurplePidjin · 21/08/2014 21:57

nickel i hope i have ok taste in music what with it being my degree and all Wink Will check out widor although now wondering if pachelbel's fugue mught be fun... or the moonlight sonata...

nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 22:16

dh doesn't know the fugue. he said "are you sure you don't mean canon?" I said "she said fun, so I doubt it"
we did a search on you tube and tgere are a few different ones - d minor, c, d major... which one please?
and thrn I told him your moonlight sonata and his face went ConfusedHmm

Milly how exciting. Hope you soon find good schools and a good church and many friends.
And that your dh likes the house.

PurplePidjin · 22/08/2014 08:37

the canon in d, the famous one. has a second movement although i might be remembering wrong and its not a fugue

PurplePidjin · 22/08/2014 18:24

It's a Gigue. I was only 2 letters out Hmm

nickelbabe · 22/08/2014 19:46

ah. so you did mean the canon Grin

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 22/08/2014 19:52

Nope, the second movement. The not-famous bit Wink

nickelbabe · 22/08/2014 20:00

you've beaten dh's encyclopaedic knowldge. he doesn't know that bit.
I am trying to load your vid, but it just crashed my tablet so give me a moment

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 22/08/2014 20:16

:o

Is he impressed by me yet? Wink

Dutchoma · 22/08/2014 20:19

I knew there was a second bit.

nickelbabe · 22/08/2014 21:02

yes, you are right, it is rather fun.
I like it.
it's likely your organist doesn't know it though, if dh doesn't.

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 22/08/2014 21:03

yes, he is. he likes it too
:)

nickelbabe · 22/08/2014 21:05

ps. hctb is from lohengrin, but it's not the "main part" of it

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 22/08/2014 21:24

I know. I don't think the piece I'm thinking of is actually Wagner, but might have been on the same programme we performed at youth orchestra. I have no idea what else was on it and nobody I could ask though Sad

nickelbabe · 22/08/2014 21:49

I've showed gim the notes but he can't work it out by singing it.
it's a bit late to do it on the piano, but we'll try to remember to try it tomorrow

OP posts:
Dutchoma · 22/08/2014 21:49

A propos of nothing: I HATE Wagner.
