you can so make a big dress into a 50s vintage dress.
I really want to do it now!
we need to find aa way!
how long have you got?

how bizarre PA! Confused you'd think if it came up often he'd at least learn a fudge for those 2 lines - even a unison coupler!

I can't make a strapless dress have straps though, nor can I make a pouffy flouncy skirt into a wiggle one...

I think I might just ask the organist what he likes to play the most and have that for the incidental stuff. Then i only have to decide on hymns and readings?

I too find it incredibly odd that PA's organist didn't just learn/fluff the lines Confused

nickelbabe · 05/09/2014 08:05

no, you can! you treat the dress like a piece of fabric
I really want to have a go at it.
Grin

if you didn't want to chop and flounce, you take fabric from elsewhere on the dress to make a bodice extension.

yes, you could (organist), but it's worth suggesting things you like already because if ge knows them, it's win-win

and for hymns. you must have some favourites?

we had gracious spirit holy ghost, all my hope on god is founded, o praise ye the lord (with a llovely choral amen amen), o worship the king.
but also amazing are tell out my soul, praise my soul the king of heaven , love divine (which also has an amazinh anthem by sydney Nicholson if you have a choir), make me aa channel of your piece, come down o love divine, o perfect love, o lord my god when i in awesome wonder, and can it be (as long as last two lines of each verse are repeated as the rrefrain a la songgs of fellowship), praise to the holiestin the heiggt, crown him with many crowns, praise to the lord the almighty the king of ccreation, fight the good fight, how shall I sing that majesty, ubi caritas (there's a congregational version in hymns ancient and modern new standard 465 - the words are very suitable for a wedding)

for readings, I chose them - they were words from antgems that stuck out and i found where they came from.
you could choose readings tgat mean something to you personally- there are loads I'm sure that you must have gone "oh, that's lovely" along tge way.

I've had a lovely experience today.
We had to go to our local community centre this lunchtime.
A seventh day adventist chur h holds their services there. Well, dd always tries to join in with their singing, and as I was trying to remove her, I was greeted by a lady who's a teacher in one of the schools I used to visit. She invited us into have a lun h meal with them Grin
It was rrally lovely, chatted to some, enjoued lovely food, dd played with a little boy. She refused to leave because "wan' stay singing ", so we stayed and sang (they were going off to a baptism in chatham in the afternoonso were practising their song)
They even invited us to join us to the baptism, but I'm proper poorly, dd had wet her nappy and also gone to sleep, and I'm bellydancing tonight.
I had a really lovely time though Grin

Nickel DP was raised 7th day and MIL and SIL are practising. It's a wonderful church and they have some brilliant ideas on the body being a gift from God that you should try to keep healthy. My church (CofE) is just up the road and the nearest Adventist one is miles away so we go to "mine" but once ds is old enough I'll send him along with MIL to see what it's like. I nearly went with her when we were staying there when DP was ill, but ds was only 5 weeks old and it would have been bloody hard work keeping him entertained for the whole thing - they do service, bible study, share a meal, loads of stuff. Oh, and all on a Saturday - it's very Old Testament!

nickelbabe · 07/09/2014 22:09

My best friend in childhood is a 7th daycer. Their services do go on for hours Grin
But it's lovely to see the way they worship; it's just so amazed and thankful :)

Just thought I'd pop by and share this. I belong to an email round-robin, for Ely Diocese. A vicar on there asked if anyone had any copies of a particular John Rutter piece that she could borrow. John Rutter HIMSELF replied, gently pointing out that it is through sales of sheet music that he makes any money at all!

PurplePidjin · 13/09/2014 13:25

Haha Mary that's an awesome story :o

nickelbabe · 13/09/2014 20:26

love of money, though...

It's gone all quiet again....

Do you want to know about the new choirmaster? Yes, I said new choirmaster!
She accepted the role (so far) and started on Friday.
Everyone was worried about dh feeling pushed out, but he's thrilled! He's still dire tor of music, so ultimately on charge.
Choir practice on Friday was amazing and the difference on Sunday! Wow! It was like we were a new choirl
Congregation didn't dare say what they thought in case dh got offended, so I made sure they knew he was glad.
CW (the chorister one) said it was like a miracle had taken place. Grin
Which of course, as long as CM can keep us up, it'll make us more joinable for new ies Grin

That's really lovely Nickel I think our choir has died the death, very quietly and nobody dare mention it. We had a church meeting tonight and once again were not quorate (48 out of the 50 needed). this is the third time that we have not been able to get people in the church for a meeting.

niminypiminy · 24/09/2014 22:04

Oma that is really sad. Is it a meeting about something in particular, or a general meeting? That must be so dispiriting.

Dutchoma · 24/09/2014 22:08

Just a regular church meeting, like every Baptist church has. Every church is autonomous in the Baptist church, but apparently we cannot change the amount of people we need to be quorate. I think it is about a third of the membership, 50 members. We had 48.

niminypiminy · 24/09/2014 22:28

Ah does this mean you can't take decisions about important things?

Dutchoma · 24/09/2014 22:35

Yes, that is exactly what it does mean. No decisions at all, no accepting the minutes of the (two) previous meetings, no acceptance of new church members, nothing. In the June meeting we were about to appoint two new members of staff, people had to go home to fetch family members. It is totally frustrating and very discouraging for the leadership. I think our church is not interested in being the church for the community, they just want cosy meetings on a Sunday or the Women's Fellowship. Prayer meetings are also badly attended and I must admit I don't go to them either.

nickelbabe · 24/09/2014 23:04

That's really sad oma :(
Thankfully at our annual meetings there is no minimum attendance required. Normally we number 1/5 ?

There's a phrase I've heard people use more and more recently to describe other Christians or churches. It is "they don't preach the bible". When I've asked people to explain what is meant by this phrase they tend to look a bit shifty, shuffle their feet and say "you know...". Only the problem is, I don't know. Any ideas? A slight variation is "At our church we REALLY preach the bible". Is this to suggest that in their view other churches don't?

Dutchoma · 01/10/2014 17:32

I think they are referring to their attitude to women leaders, homosexuality etc. just to mention a few.
They think that the Bible is totally clear about such things and they can thunder from the pulpit against it. At the same time they may think that they come across as a bit bigotted and so they are a 'bit shifty, you know'

GingerCurl · 01/10/2014 22:02

I am very wary of churches that "preach the Bible". Whenever i hear someone says that a particular church or preacher really preaches the Bible, i feel like asking, "You mean as opposed to the complete works of Shakespeare/encyclopedia britannica?"or "oh you mean that we should seek out the drunks, druggies and prostitutes and feed, clothe and love them? That we should sell all our possessions and give the money to the poor? Wow that's fantastic! " I bite my tongue instead. I don't want to be mean and they certainly wouldn't see the joke.

cheapskatemum · 01/10/2014 22:16

Nickelb that's a fantastic answer to prayer! Singing God's praises is one of my favourite parts of Sunday services, I can see how inspiring it must be to be led by a newly-enthused choir.

Didn't realise you were a Baptist too Dutch. It is possible to change the quoracy of your church meetings, but ironically, you would have to be in a meeting that was quorate in order to do so Grin.

cloutiedumpling · 01/10/2014 22:38

Hmmn that was what I suspected. I reckon I am more liberal than some of my friends.

nickelbabe · 02/10/2014 15:16

I agree about "preaching the bible"
It invariably means interpreting the ible to their own agenda.
As far as I can see, preaching the bible is spreading the word about love and tolerance, encouraging and strengthening each other and worshipping god.

OP posts:
madhairday · 02/10/2014 17:29

yy. I get suspicious of this too - like those churches who are not 'bible preaching' are heretics or similar. IME people who say this mean churches who think women should keep it zipped and that the world was created in 6 literal days, and any other interpretations are seen as 'unbiblical'. Shame, there is such great depth and wonder to the bible and we owe it to discover these depths and to love the word of God by not putting it into some neat little box. I could go on....

nickel that's brilliant about the choir :) Pleased for you!
