When a friend said to me "at our church we REALLY preach the bible" I felt it was as though she was saying that we don't at our church and I thought it was quite insulting. When I hear people in my church making similar comments it makes me feel very uncomfortable. I'll probably have to challenge it at some point.

What about the phrase "bible believing", as in a "bible believing man"? What does that really mean? Aren't all Christians bible believing? Again, it seems to be used to refer to someone who is quite conservative and evangelical in outlook. I'm not sure if there is some other subtext though. Why can't people just use plain English?

You have to be careful how you believe the Bible. You can't literally follow all its commandments. If you want to know why Google 'Levitical questions'.

But yes, a Christian cannot be a Christian without believing that God speaks through the Bible and that there are eternal truths to be found there. No Christian can get away without following in Jesus' footsteps as far as love, justice and mercy are concerned and no-one can come anywhere near that without the help of the Holy Spirit.
And no Christian, Bible believing or not, can get away with pretending that (s)he knows it all.
