well, she has been going round other churches in kent looking for choirs that need leaders, but she and her family come to st michael's as their chosen church. we know she likes our music because she said she thinks we have a good repertoire, so we're hopong that means she likes it traditional!

especially as there is goly trinity that if she liked more modern, she could have gone there instead or even st mary's because she has a preschooler.

she also goes back to her old church to do the voice for life scheme with them.

Sounds promising then Grin

Brew

Nothing as holy and inspiring as you lot, but I'm hopefully going to be volunteering with the monthly youth group at church from September (it's already my "profession") and anyone who fancies giving me a bit of guidance on getting married CofE style please pipe up - if I can ever track down the vicar to actually set a proper date I'll be getting married in October half term!

Bluetinkerbell · 19/08/2014 22:31

You better hurry Pidj you need your banns read on 3 consecutive Sundays before you can get married in church!

Bluetinkerbell · 19/08/2014 22:32

nickel I know! So exciting!!! :)

PurplePidjin · 20/08/2014 09:20

yeah will start a campaign of phoning tonight as the email they ask you to send hasn't worked!

nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 14:37

sorry, pidj - i class that as inspiring Grin

I can advise on getting married. Just ask the Qs (don't forget you'll have to legitimize your DS, and you don't have to change your name, right!)

3 consecutive sundays isn't hard though - at our church, they read them literally the 3 sundays before the wedding.

we started planning our wedding in april (only because I had to have time to make the dress!), and our banns were read in July with the wedding the 1st saturday in august

Hello! You can tell I'm a newbie to your chat threads, because i thought you'd all be theologising about the Resurrection (as in, of Jesus Christ) by page 2!

Am on holiday at the moment - in the land of the nickel, nickelb. We have a BBQ planned at our church on Sunday 24th, which is the day I return, so I'm a bit Sad about that weather report. I'm also organising a Bible tour at the British Museum on Sept 10th. We are a tiny church, so there will probably be spare places, if anyone's interested.

I love it when prayers, such as one for a new choirleader are answered as described above.

PurplePidjin · 20/08/2014 18:05

Campaign over, got through to him just now and am ringing back mid morning tomorrow to chat diaries :o Looks like most of October is clear, should I go for Saturday the 1st or mid week sometime? I've picked that week so the school-age neices and nephews can come but some people will be working and it seems mean to ask them to book a day's leave if I can get a Saturday. Thoughts?

First question was did I know how hard it would be to organise a wedding on such short notice. I replied that we want to be married not have A Wedding so all that needed organising was the church and somewhere to take the family for lunch afterwards! I will probably also see if I can get the hall for an hour or so afterwards, then we can offer anyone who comes along for the ceremony a Brew and a slice of the Cake Again, thoughts? We don't want A Big Wedding but the ceremony is in a public place so others of the congregation might like to come and see us say the big words iyswim

Dutchoma · 20/08/2014 18:16

I can so understand that you want to be married but not have 'A Wedding'.
I would go for the Saturday if you can get it for the reasons that you mention.
How many wedding guests do you think you will have to take to lunch?

And yes to hiring the church hall for an hour afterwards to serve Brew and Cake.
It should not be difficult in the least to organise that in the space of a month.

PurplePidjin · 20/08/2014 18:25

29/30 ish max for lunch - will get in touch with local pubs once I have a date and get a set menu, heavy on the veggie options for SIL. I don't imagine there'll be many more than that at the church, but local friends might fancy stopping by :)

nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 19:39

it's not hard to organise a wedding at short notice!
we managed it!

like you, we wanted the service to be the most important part, and we had a buffet lunch in the church afterwards.

the hardest thing to organise was the evening do, and even that was easy (booked a local works club, a dj and some food done by the venue)

actually, no, the hardest part was trying to get home on the Friday night - we went to costco to get all the food for the buffet (about £200 to serve 200 people) and on the way home, got stuck in traffic for about 3 hours because a lorry caught fire on the bridge! we very nearly missed ouur wedding rehearsal!

Brew?

you mean you're holidaying down my way? that's exciting!

We're not really having a reception. Ideally I want a 10am ceremony (lasts an hour or so?) then tea/bubbly and cake in the hall. Then say goodbye to friends and go for lunch with family (and friends that are ds's godparents so practically family). SIL has offered to have ds for a couple of nights so we can go away together for a honeymoon but that doesn't necessarily have to be immediately after, could be later on (my birthday is in November so that might be a better opportunity)

We don't want fuss, nor do we need a load of presents - if anybody asks, we have an odd space under the stairs so will suggest a contribution towards a bespoke built in bookcase there; we're all bookworms! That way it's "something for the house and our new life together" without being an endless pile of crockery etc. When DP moved in we counted 6 tin openers, 3 bottle openers, 2 sets of sharp knives plus multiple oddments... I think we're set for household objects Hmm

nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 20:42

that sounds lovely.
we did our at half past 2 so that all DH's postie friends could come without having to book the day off work Grin

I do think 10am really early, though - maybe say 11, then bubbly won't feel so odd at 12.
if that lasts an hour or two, then you're still at lunch by 2 o'clock, and that'll be fine.

we didn't have presents either - we put a thing on our little website saying that if people really insist, they can donate to the church.

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 20/08/2014 20:42

so, what music you got planned?
do you need an organist or extra guests ?

OP posts:
PurplePidjin · 20/08/2014 21:06

10 takes into account ds and dn's naps (both rising 2). Also it's a good time of day for the dn who is on the autistic spectrum and means dsil can have her and her younger brother home at a reasonable time - she'd rather do it as a day thing as it's easier.

Music has yet to be thought of. We like the Faure Pavane for the register signing bit, and I quite like the 2nd movement of Eine Kleine for my entry. Or I'll go for the proper Here Comes The Bride bit - any ideas what that's actually from? I thought it was the Lohengrin Overture but it's not; there's a rather spectacular bit that comes before it that I love (G B D G G# A F# G F# E D E D D... if you can work that out?) but I last played it in Youth Orchestra about 15 years ago Hmm

Organist comes with the church I think but feel free to buy a hat! Are you making me flowers?

cheapskatemum · 21/08/2014 02:53

Hi again! Now you're all talking weddings and funnily enough I celebrated the nuptuals of 2 dear friends just before I came away - not to Kent nickelb, USA, where they use nickels, though I was on holiday in your county last year: visiting friends in Chatham, Rainham and Pembury. Anyway, this couple had a service at 10.30am, strictly their children & 2 witnesses only, then photos outside a nearby cathedral, in the Abbey Gardens. Then a lovely lunch, to which they invited close friends. Like PurpleP they wanted to be married! but not have "A Wedding". It was on a Monday.

PurplePidjin · 21/08/2014 11:57

All booked, actual wedding and appointment to do paperwork, hurrah! 10 weeks to go...

nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 18:23

oh, please don't go for here comes the bride or the wedding march!
(the organist will call it "trad B and A" - traditional before and after)

try La Rejouissance (from music for the royal fireworks) to leave to - it's proper jolly.

Good to have something different to enter to - I like your idea.

will try to make flowers

OP posts:
nickelbabe · 21/08/2014 18:25

our asst organist knows la rejouissance, but you will have to ask your organist NOW if s/he knows it, because it might take 10 weeks to learn it (hope not, but best give them notice)

here's version on youtube
