We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).

i still like Lars after the little polar bear and the fact he is a black labrador and the polar bear was white is a bit of a pun too!

what if you dropped the middle syllable when yelling: 'Mul-bry!'?
Have to say, no one other than my best friend and I seem to like Mulberry as a name.

collision - I quite like the white joke too. Dh wants to call him Iorek after the polar bear in Northern Lights.

Prune?

Some cute names here . How about pinching Jazz, Boozer or Harpo?

Janh · 06/01/2006 12:28

Or give him that name that goes with your surname and call him by the 2 initials, if they go well.

Dh is adament we're not using place names - he says it's too Brooklyn Beckham!

What about Ludo or Lupin? (I've just been on the Harry Potter website )
Have decided that Sirius is too scary a name though...

We're probably 90% sure now. He's going to be...

Lupin.

It's good to shout and we all (esp ds) like the HP reference.
Dd has now at this late time entered her choice for consideration:

Fairy.

we just got a pup and called it rabbit, mm dont ask

Lupin is rather flowery for a boy dontcha think?

Janh · 06/01/2006 23:00

Spoke to someone today who has a golden retriever called George (female) - plans to get another called Mildred arf arf - said he thought Beans was a good name for a dog (any dog!)

Offered for consideration anyway.

Lupin a bit girlie, cc - even though it is also the unconventional son in Diary of a Nobody. (Hey - I know - Pooter!)

kleggie · 06/01/2006 23:30

Agree that Lupin is a bit feminine. What about Remus instead? Or Diggory? Lucius? Albus?
Friends have recently named their dogs:

Cossack
Pepperpot
Shay
Bob (lordy!)
Silas

kleggie · 06/01/2006 23:37

Or Pan after Pullman's Pantalaimon. Baruch? Balthamos? Will's daemon was Kirjava. Serafina's was called Kaisa (bit girly though imo).

Sorry if anybody else has suggested these.

Janh · 06/01/2006 23:39

Friend had cat called Digory - very nice, and topical too (well, ish)

dinny · 06/01/2006 23:41

Sirius? Sorry, prob been done, not read thread.

Or Sinbad? Or Remus or Romulous? Moses?

My cat is called Anton, which really suits him (not black though).

dinny · 06/01/2006 23:42

Jan, used to event a horse called Digger. Love Digory/Digger type names.

Janh · 06/01/2006 23:42

Hagrid? Buckbeak? Norbert?
