We're collecting our new (and first!) dog on Tuesday. He is a 12 week old black lab and very sweet. I would like to give him a dog name as opposed to a child's name and I quite like the idea of naming after either a character from a book or a band. I also like foods and other animals species!
Current favourites:
Jem
Raisin
Otter
Inigo (yes, I know it's a proper name but it's more unusual iykwim).

Badger? (but v Jilly Cooperpesque)

how is Lupin girly then?

kaansmum · 07/01/2006 00:11

If he were mine I'd definitely call him "Mungo" - afte the dog in the popular 1970s childrens TV show "Mary Mungo and Midge"

kleggie · 07/01/2006 00:48

Dinny- Lupin's girly cos it's the name of a flower! I don't think this is necessarily the first thing you think of on hearing it, but once somebody mentions it, it sticks!

Lars it is then Cupcakes! do I get a prize?!!

TinyGang · 07/01/2006 09:23

Is there a decision yet? I keep coming back to check! Lars sounds very dignified - or even the name of some hunky German beefcake

Just thought of Othello - wasn't he brooding and dark?

Lockets PMSL!

TinyGang · 07/01/2006 10:00

Oh, Mungo is a GREAT name! Well done Kaansmum

Janh · 07/01/2006 12:04

Mungo is brilliant - it's Scottish too! (And means "gentle and kind" apparently )

Janh · 07/01/2006 12:21

Have just been through the names in the Scottish list in Behind the Name (which is an American site so some of their definitions etc are a bit off the wall) and found - in case Mungo doesn't suit either:

Carson
Conall (means strong wolf)
Duff (means dark)
Duncan (brown warrior)
Fingal (white stranger)
Lennox
Malcolm
Monroe
Murdo
Murray
Sholto
Tam
Torquil (lol)
Wallace

and also Heck, as a Scottish diminutive for Hector, which is another TV doggie name!

We were watching Hectors House yesterday

dave

PeachyClair · 07/01/2006 12:58

duo (welsh for blacken / black, apparently)

Scrumpy ([winl])

I always like logical names myself. In the past have had spherical (a fat cat), scraggy (messy cat) and errol (looked like a hamster with fat cheeks)

Does nobody like Lupin? I don't think it's girlie - in fact I wouldn't consider giving it to a girl dog (yes, I know but I'm not yet so acquainted with dogs that I can type 'bitch' without flinching).
We like the latin association of wolf (even though he's far from it) as well as HP. Dh and ds really like it (he's taking about him as LoopyDoopy already). I still like Bramble but I don't know that I could dissuade dh and ds...
Dh has been very clever and just made a lift up and down gate to keep dog in utility area at back of house. He asked me to tell you how brilliantly clever he's being (he's very pleased with himself ).

I think Lupin is nice - in our house he would end up being loopy.

leggymamba · 07/01/2006 20:00

that doesn't read right - would end up being called loopy. Or maybe I was right first time!

Am impressed with dh - mine wouldn't have even thought of doing anything like that until living room carpet had been chewed! And it's not even covered on insurance!

Passionflower · 07/01/2006 20:50

I like Lupin
