Ding, ding, round 3 of the highly entertaining collection of misspellings, misuse and general bastardisation of language. The floor is youre’s x

@ BrickBiscuit -
I agree. I suppose to rake a person over the coals could be the same as to haul them over the coals, but to me, raking over the coals is going over something, or dredging something up again. Apparently we need to say “raking over OLD coals” to make ourselves clear.

On Twitter:

"Reading isn’t your this, eh Champ?"

😂

I'm not sure I fancy putting hydraulic acid on my face.

Not even with retinal - retinal what, precisely, I'm not sure. (Style and beauty)

It’s the ultimate skin peel!

Wouldn't it have a lifting effect?

It’s my time to shine! I’ve been keeping a list of errors I see online and I add to it when I see a new one. Yes these are all real 😵‍💫

Incredibly sad I know but at least it took away my urge to correct people. I started off tracking the site I found the error but I didn’t keep it up sorry!

Omg this is brilliant but… are you ok?

Funnywonder · 30/05/2026 09:21

A bit niche this one, but ‘Miss Haversham’. Charles Dickens certainly created a very memorable character, considering that her name comes up on Mumsnet enough for me to notice that so many people can’t spell it. I always think it’s even worse when you try to look clever by referencing a literary character, then can’t even manage to spell it correctly😅

AlbieJiggered · 30/05/2026 09:42

@Funnywonder , that's possibly an autocorrect. Haversham - Wikipedia

I don’t think so to be honest. Unless perhaps there are multiple people on Mumsnet who live in the small village of Haversham and type it so often that their keyboard automatically offers it as a suggestion for Havisham😅

AlbieJiggered · 30/05/2026 10:02

It's social media, it could have been an autocorrect, they've probably not read Great Expectations, and you knew who they meant. As a pedant you are quite right to mention it.

Your 'to be honest' is superfluous. See “To be honest” Why? | Mumsnet.

Is autocorrect really so inept as to append 'Haversham' to Miss? Or does it have no contextual basis to its suggestions at all? If the latter is the case, how on earth is AI supposed to take over our jobs?

Funnywonder · 30/05/2026 10:29

Read my post back @AlbieJiggered without the ‘to be honest.’ I think it sounds a bit curt. It’s a polite filler. And I stand by it😁

AlbieJiggered · 30/05/2026 10:29

Autocorrect and AI aren't the same. how on earth is AI supposed to take over our jobs?
Because it is believed to be something it's not.

AlbieJiggered · 30/05/2026 10:33

You're in Pedants' corner, @Funnywonder . The to be honest adds nothing.

Not the same, but related products of the same industry, IT. If it can't get autocorrect (a narrow AI) anywhere near right - unable to tell a Dickens character from a town by context - how can it be trusted to get large AI right?

Yes, your 'TBH' was conversational and appropriate.

This is Pedants' corner. It was a pointless filler. If anything, it introduces doubt about the person's general honesty.

Edited

A difference of opinion on style is not pedantry.

AlbieJiggered · 30/05/2026 14:03

Pedantry can include writing style.

Ladies! ‘To be honest’ is of course superfluous but it does add a softer tone to the comment x

It doesn't. It's pointless waffle.

This thread is normally fun and my original comment was light-hearted but someone took offence.

A mixed metaphor on an AIBU thread today.

She needs to furrow her own trough.

@grumpygrape , did she need to plough her own furrow?
