Ding, ding, round 3 of the highly entertaining collection of misspellings, misuse and general bastardisation of language. The floor is youre’s x

This place never ceases to amaze me. We're in a country where everyone has access to free education from 5 to 16 or 18 yet they use words and phrases without thought to what the word or phrase actually means or should look like.

AlbieJiggered · 23/05/2026 12:35

I've just seen 'it bares repeating'.

I know!

The excuses that language is always evolving or that it is more important to express yourself only reach so far, as some people have evolved their SPAG and are expressing themselves to the point where they are unintelligible.

I proofread every post, email and text before sending and there are some words I have to check the spelling of every time I use them. Even so I still get things wrong sometimes.

I suppose that’s why I’d class myself as a pedant!

Put stones in shallow dishes of water so bees can drink without being immerged…

Bran new has been cropping up everywhere for me at the moment ... or should I say "as" been cropping up. There have been so many posts on various sites where as is used instead of has that I'm beginning to doubt myself.

Someone on Facebook is living in a first floor flat which has a boucny (took me a few seconds) x

Guessing a balcony? Surely that can’t be auto correct?
I do wonder how many people have a hearing or auditory processing problem.

AlbieJiggered · 25/05/2026 12:35

Boucny is quite a stretch. I'd think they do that SE London (?) thing of saying L as a W sound. Bow-k-ny instead of bal-cuh-ny.

Yes I’d say so. I’m SE London and we do have lazy pronunciation.

I first heard the word tribunal forty or so years ago. I thought it was tribuneral. Quite often I hear someone say tribuneral but I don't think they are. And as I'm so quick to pick up on and criticise profusely people saying or writing/typing the wrong thing, I'm blaming my ears/hearing/brain.

Allseeingallknowing · 25/05/2026 17:45

Seen on review of Eastenders- Oscar needs a plutonic friend- could be a rocky relationship!

Presumably it's in the SE? Wonder if they drink their bo'oh o' wo'-ah on the boucny after doing some spo'oh?

Whosthetabbynow · 26/05/2026 14:50

@SchnizelVonKrumm Not arf x

A couple off the prepper thread today:

You are assuming an apoplectic event?
and,
I'd rather wonder off to the garage with a hosepipe.

AlbieJiggered · 27/05/2026 10:54

'You are assuming an apoplectic event?' Grin

Wonder for wander appears quite often. It makes me wander why. Wanderful innit?

Another frequent flyer has popped up again today, referring to a retailer who is continuing to "flaunt the high court ruling" on single-sex changing rooms. Given that flaunt means "to show off or display something proudly" and the retailer in question is wholly unapologetic, I suppose there's a grain of truth in there somewhere.

Flaunting their flouting.

Have just seen a post with multiple uses of 'bcos' instead of because. 🙄

I suppose that’s deliberate txtspk, which seems a bit passé nowadays.

AlbieJiggered · 28/05/2026 09:52

@MagpiePi , It's cuz I dislike.

BrickBiscuit · 28/05/2026 09:57

I just saw 'they should have been raked over the coals' and thought it incorrect for 'hauled'. However, looking it up it is a correct variant. Seems wrong to me though, as the origin involves 'hauling over' while 'raking over' is more like searching among the embers.

Whosthetabbynow · 28/05/2026 10:13

Hauled over the coals. Up on the carpet.

Chersfrozenface · 28/05/2026 19:06

I'm not sure I fancy putting hydraulic acid on my face.

Not even with retinal - retinal what, precisely, I'm not sure. (Style and beauty)
