OP posts:
TheMysticMasseuse · 27/02/2010 21:33

'the Bunk is strictly a suit and tie mothrfucker'. I love him. Other than that dark clouds are gathering and i already feel sick in anticipation of season 4 finale

no fondue I swear!!!!

Francagoestohollywood · 27/02/2010 22:15

Oh that's brilliant sputnik!!!

TheMysticMasseuse · 28/02/2010 09:27

for you Franca

Incidentally, if you are on facebook, you can join this group to obsess forever, and ever, and ever....

Francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2010 10:50

I could probably join Facebook just for that. Btw, there are lots of spoilers on that facebook's page (which I already knew about), so be aware!!!

Dh has just gone to the airport and will be in the UK for 3 days. I asked him to buy me pg tips, shortbreads, Living etc and a peppa pig magazine for dd, but he said he won't have the time . Men.

Penthesileia · 28/02/2010 11:10

franca, do you want those things? you only need to ask! if your dh doesn't pick them up, let me know and I will send them - it would be my pleasure!!!!

yes, childcare working out fine - dd no longer cries when we leave in the mornings, which is a great relief, and the nanny has worked out how to get her to sleep, etc.

so that's all fine; it's just that I've got so much to do at work, and previously I would get stuff done staying up all night, or going in super early or staying late - you know. but now I can't do that - I can't squeeze any more time out of the week, iyswim, but my job and the things I need to get done are the same, if not more, so I feel like I'm on permanent catch-up and always on the brink of disaster.... for example, I'll have a stack of marking coming in tomorrow, and I literally can't figure out when I'll have time to do it (on top of writing lectures, etc.). baaaahh. still, the sun rises and sets, so the days pass! I'll get through it somehow...

not sure when we'll move in; hopefully spring; if not, though, we're really in trouble; paying for 2 houses is crippling us, financially.

thanks for all your kind words, btw.

xx

Penthesileia · 28/02/2010 11:12

oh, and dd had a raised temperature last night - still does - so that was fun and she's clingy today, poor wee soul. no idea why...

Francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2010 11:23

Penthe , you are always so kind . I can find all those things here in Italy too, they are a bit more expensive, but that's not the point. I really wonder how dh can't find 5 mins to pop into sainsbos (he'll be in exeter, I mean the place is compact!!!) and get them! (or even a whsmith at the airport, no?). But I'll let you know, thanks

I really feel for you with the constant catching up, I've got so many friends in a similar situation. Even some who aren't mothers. A dear friend of mine in the UK is an academic and was always frantic. Apparently she devoted too much time to her students and always had to work at night. I miss her.
Another friend, who is also a mnetter, went part time, but she is adamant that it didn't do much for her career.

Is dd coming down with some bug? Lots of nasties going around at this time of the year. Poor mini penthe.

Penthesileia · 28/02/2010 11:32

ok - do let me know.

yes, i know the feeling wrt devoting too much time to students; it's a bit of a tragedy, really, the current set up re: RAE/REF here - it totally disincentivises you from paying adequate attention to students - you are simply not rewarded, nay you're punished, for it; yet students are the reason universities exist! i hate it, tbh. it's counter-intuitive and encourages a fascist bureaucratic mindset and the production of pointless and mediocre research. gahhhh. can you tell i've had 4 "pep" talks from senior colleagues concerning my "output"? bleurgh.

not sure about dd. i'm hoping it's just some random thing that'll be over by tonight. i'm already panicking about having to take the day off tomorrow.

TheMysticMasseuse · 28/02/2010 11:35

Penthe, i feel for you i really do. For me, what really helped was to change my mndset, and i now tell myself that I WILL do it somehow, whether or not I stress about it. Also to allow myself to be good enough (sounds so cliche i know), eg whereas previouslyi'd proofread every paper i wrote 3 times, oncewould have to do etc.

Coraggio.

Franca, grrr at your dh. Mine would be the same.

Francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2010 11:41

Penthe will do.
Yes, I agree about RAE etc. Very bureaucratic and yes, I've heard academics speak about students as a nuisance or an obstacle etc.

Masseuse, glad to hear it's not just dh who is reluctant to set foot in a shop. It annoys me big time.

Meanwhile, we are deep into drama here, as the dc have "lost" Ciccino Cerottino (don't ask ) while playing scuola materna. I mean, it can't have hidden by itself, no?

Penthesileia · 28/02/2010 11:45

Of course, those moments when I do have some time - like now, as DD naps - I spend on MN.

Idiot, moi?

Just googled Ciccino Cerottino... If that's what's wandered off on its own, it looks like you're heading for some kind of Dario Argento style horror set-up, franca!

La-la-la-la-la-la-la

Francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2010 11:53

... it's evil, isn't it. Luckily ds has just found it, it was under a table, preparing for the next strike. Dd absolutely adores it,

... it's Sunday! You really don't want to work on a sunday?

Off to scolare la pasta now...

Francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2010 11:54

I need to cut my ...... habit, don't I

Penthesileia · 28/02/2010 12:02

mmmm, pasta. i'm hungry... is it too early for lunch?

i like ...

virginia woolf uses three dots a lot to signify lots of things: (enforced) silence, (patriarchal) interruption, dissent, irony, doubt, etc.

punctuation can do a lot of things.

...

Rosa · 28/02/2010 13:08

Franca tell your dh to shop at the airport her can get the lot there and not having time is no excuse the supermarkets stay open 24 hrs now a days ....
MM well done on the skiing I don't think I would be able to use my skis again and I used to be good but I think my confidence has gone !
Penthe hi hope your dd is ok and its no nasty bugs still far too many flying round for my tastes.
Sput that site is bad bad bad.
Yes Dh saw Angelina Jolie yesterday with a child he said she was ugly !

Francagoestohollywood · 28/02/2010 13:20

She must be scarily skinny, no??
I told him he could get most of the stuff at the airport, he looked surprised .

Pasta was lovely, I made a superb amatriciana, kids had 2 servings each!

Ds wants the pc for watching football on youtube. Dear me.

Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2010 12:29

So, where's everyone?

Rosa · 01/03/2010 13:13

I'm here not for long though. Just discovered Sky has dropped BBC entertainment from the programs it shows I am mega cross and so is dd as she loved her Balamory and the Tweenies in the morning. No explanation or warning ....
Bank came back with the perito value it is what we want - now we need the notaio to do the premliminare (SP) and then lord knows how long before the rogito......Me thinks it will be a year at least before we will be in that place..... ( If we get it!)

Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2010 13:25

Oh rosa, this is seriously good news! Dare I say that once you signed the preliminare is more or less a done thing? I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Shame about the bbc though. I wish we had a tv catching just UK channels.

Sputnik · 01/03/2010 13:48

Good news Rosa!
Dropped DH off at the airport yesterday so facing 2 1/2 weeks on our own. At least it's not half term this time.

Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2010 14:00

I'm impressed by your driving skills sputnik, was it you who was overwhelmed by the idea of driving around rome and now even venture to the airport? Respect!!!
I, on the other hand, still haven't visited the scuola guida to book some lezioni to freshen up my (poor) driving.

Sputnik · 01/03/2010 14:05

Yes it's funny. No problems going anywhere now if I know the road, though probably wouldn't drive around the centre, public transport is easier and there's nowhere to park anyway.

Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2010 14:13

Yes, I suppose practicing is the way to get the confidence back.
I agree with not using the car in the city centre. it's pointless here and it'd fill me with angst thinking about the parking etc.
I'd need the car just for the spesa.

Sputnik · 01/03/2010 14:17

Yes go and book some lessons, it's really not that bad.

Francagoestohollywood · 01/03/2010 14:24

Yes, I should, shouldn't I. In the meantime I have a very convenient public transport card, I can hop on any bus/metro etc I want for 30 euro a month.

I really wonder where Bucharest is, haven't seen her around, I hope she is ok and not being harassed by evil teachers or mothers at the school gate
