Rosa · 30/11/2008 11:19

Pippi hope all goes well with your dh .. NOt much time to scribble dd2 seems to be constantly hungry not sure if its as she like snacking and then falling asleep- oh teh fun of new borns.
Gio hope your flu is better. G parents not due to see them now until the spring and I feel sh*t about it. DD1 coldy , grumpy dh and me both tired !!!!

hothell · 30/11/2008 11:42

thank you for the articles pippi, very interesting, he does write effortlessly well...the book is a tough read, i think it really explains the south..i think it is discounted on amazon..
we are around during the holidays, i like being in the uk in the winter...
kids are fine, especially come 8pm when they are both asleep...
how serious is pippi's dh operation, how many days of recovery?
how is mini rosa?
dreary day here, no light, grey, drizzly rain, bleah!

hothell · 30/11/2008 11:43

do any of you give extra vitamins to your kids/babies? here it is not recommended i don't think, but i think in italy pediatri prescribe them.

hothell · 30/11/2008 11:50

ciao rosa.... with both ds and dd we started quite early on to try avoid little snacks, and tried to keep them awake to feed as much as possible in one go, best trick learnt from my aunt was to undress the baby and the chill would wake him up (evil mum emoticon), also my aunt was convinced that having lots of small feeds brought on the colicks (ie tummy inundated by milk would spasm and bring on pain for the baby), whereas a few biggish feeds with space in between better for their tummies. No idea if this is true, worked for both mine, but no idea, my old aunt did also recommend leaving baby outside in the garden a lot to take the air which we thought was a bit mad and we didn't do of course.
Going to havea hot cup of tea, miserable weather.

MarsLady · 30/11/2008 11:53

ciao bella(s)

So... we're definitely coming to Italy in July. By we I mean DS1, his best friend, bf's mum and myself!

So... because I'm lazy etc etc... and can't be arsed to look through old threads... where should we stay? The boys are 16. I'm just glad of a friend of my own lol!

How are you all doing?

francagoestohollywood · 30/11/2008 12:43

Ciao Mars, great news!!!
I'll try to find what we were suggesting on the other thread, as my memory has gone!
What would you prefer, spending time on the seaside or doing also some cultural stuff? Or an active holiday on the mountains?

Hot, I think I gave ds some vit d drops and can't remember what else for the first 2 months of his life (we were in Italy) and nothing to dd, as I followed the English way . I breast fed them both until 6 months, so I think they got everything from milk and then I weaned them the Italian way, which I think includes all the vits and proteins that are needed. Plus they would get lots of sunshine when we were in italy.

Oh rosa... that is a long time to go without gparents...

Rosa · 30/11/2008 16:18

WIth dd 1 we were given Vits but she was formula and bf . With dd2 I have VitD and K to give her in drops - these are better than the other ones as they are sweet ( ish) and they are colourless whereas the others stained !
I agree Hot with what you are saying in principal but when she is screaming blue murder she settles best with bf. Take today she fed 1 side at 5am then 2 sides very slowly more sleeping than feeding at 8-9. Both siides 11.30 ish then again at 13.30 and she woke screaming at 3 and she had a bit more and has been asleep ever since its now 5.15. I am paranoid as I had poor b milk with dd1and wanted to avoid formula. We gave her a bottle at 10pm and another at 1am as I knew my milk was crappio at that time of night and I was just shattered !
I agree with the fresh air 100% and if I was in the Uk I would park her outside in the pram in the garden

Sputnik · 30/11/2008 16:45

I was prescribed vitamins but didn't give them, except some vit K with DD, but can't remember how long for.

Hmmm Mars, Italy in July, I think we came to the conclusion before that cities are a bit hot. Maybe beach or mountains would be good. We need TantiK, she is in Trentino (mountains), I think you can do white water rafting and stuff there as well as hiking of course.

hothell · 30/11/2008 17:52

Agree rosa, when they are screaming you do ANYTHING to make them stop, it is true that spacing out the feeds can affect the milk supply, so i don't know, in my experience anything that stops you killing them at 4am it's fine.

Sputnik · 30/11/2008 18:04

I seem to remember this is the time of the first growth spurt too, so just hang in there!

francagoestohollywood · 30/11/2008 20:23

thread where we discussed marslady's holiday options. Yes we ruled out cities (florence, venice, rome) as too hot. We recommended Puglia (combining seaside life with culture: Lecce and Otranto for instance), Ischia and active holidays (Trentino very good. Madonna di Campiglio is supposed to havea good night life for your ds and friend plus many different sports, and possibly spas etc. You can even take train to Trento which is a beautiful city with art, shopping etc.)

When is the growth spurt again? Yesterday I tried to console a friend of mine whose 3 weeks dd is waking every hr with the growth spurt thingy, but it dawned on me that it is the 6 weeks growth spurt.

Did someone call???!!! I can't even imagine Trentino in July as we have had tonnes of snow. I built (sorry ds, dh and I) built the biggest snowman I have ever been able to build in my life! In england we only ever got 2 inches of snow. This snowman was bigger than my Punto!

Marslady - On some of my previous visits to Trentino in the summer we have done white water rafting, horseriding, lots of mountain walks, cycling can be nice too - near me there is a lovely cycle path by the River Noce which takes you to lots of the villages - I can't quite face cycling on the hills/mountains! It has been lovely. Nowadays they do a lot of Nordic Walking (walking with sticks for a full body workout!) - try valdisole.net for some ideas. There are also some lovely terme/spas around here - but I haven't been to any! (big hint to dh for Christmas!). There is a famous one in Merano and also the Terme di Pejo - so it would be a very full holiday but relaxing at the same time simply because of the scenery! Also, as Franca said Trento is lovely, as is nearby Bolzano and Merano. I hope this helps a bit.

It is so hard to think about summer things when the snow is so thick at the moment! It is so weird having to walk to Asilo in my snowboots - i thought I would look a bit 'english' wearing them, but they make me feel the part and with my tummy ever expanding I need the stability!.

I hope Pippi's dh is doing okay today - do keep us posted.

I don't know anything about the vitamins - but never gave any to ds1 in UK, but they did offer a vit K injection (I think it was an injection) straight after he was born from what I remember.

Well this last hour I was meant to be doing my pilates for pregnancy dvd (or the washing up!)- but instead I am chatting! whoops! buona notte tutti xx (I certainly hope Rosa gets one with miniRosa!)

MarsLady · 30/11/2008 20:46

Growth spurts week 3, 6 and 11.

Thank you. Will google said areas and see what bf's mum thinks.

Ciao bella(s)

hothell · 30/11/2008 20:50

6 weeks definetely a growth spurt, and 9 weeks is the next, not sure what happens next..

francagoestohollywood · 30/11/2008 20:52

Thanks Mars

Mars do google Trentino, it is a beautiful and very well organized place (my brother and his wife went to the terme di merano, they raved about them)

Oh Tantik it does sound idyllic! ds was so happy for the bit of snow we had in dirty Milan on Friday, he would have been over the moon with all the snow you got there! It must be beautiful

Rosa · 01/12/2008 08:29

she is 3 weeks so could be growth spurt- am typing 1 handed and somebody is rooting !!!

hothell · 01/12/2008 09:33

i should tidy up but i am here.....

francagoestohollywood · 01/12/2008 10:48

Today I had one of the wettest school run ever, comparable to the worst pourings in the UK . It rained cats and dogs and it peaked at 8.30 when ds entered school. I didn't have an umbrella. And I even paid the tax. So I'm feeling miserable and would really like to buy all the things in my basket at amazon but am feeling poor ...

Rosa, sounds like she's really hungry! Mine were the same, ate constantly (esp ds) for the first months...

OP posts:
francagoestohollywood · 01/12/2008 10:58

PIPPI how's it going???

OP posts:
hothell · 01/12/2008 13:26

they have just announced on the bbc what they have a flood warning in venice, the highest water for 30 years, hope you are ok rosa..

Rosa · 01/12/2008 16:30

I am fine thanks live on the 2nd floor . Dh went ot to get milk just now and there are no street lights as the contatore has gone - lots of shops shut as they can't dry out with no electric and several bars stuffed as the fridges went out. The water was HIGH I have never seen it as high as this. Franca the bar we met at was under about 40cm of water.

francagoestohollywood · 01/12/2008 18:59

Oh my goodness !!!

OP posts:
PippiCalzelunghe · 01/12/2008 20:00

yes I am all right. just. DH is fine. out from op theatre this aft. all went well. the hospital is fantastic. only drawback is that it's in marylebone so not super fast to get to. (good points: fantastic bookshops nearby and coffeshops... for those long hours when I cannotg be there). rushed off my feet nevertheless. left house at 8am came back at 7pm. DDs are fantastic though. already in bed and as good as gold, thank god.
will have to go again tomorrow morning and evening - a good childminder is priceless! (as is a good MIL and friends which are all willing to help). (SIL managed her usual antics which are too horrible to be printed [evil emoticon]).

I should have been there (venice) this weekend... rosa, rescheduled for January, promise. and I want acqua alta too.

Trentino if my idea of heaven. (maybe due to strong heidi influences. PS: DD1 and I cried together yesterday at the episode when rottermaier is ultra horrible and heidi is homesick )
