My mum often put my hair up with elastic bands and it hurt like hell getting them out....................and awful cheap plasters that became part of your skin, could only be forced of after a long soak in the bath while painfully peeling them off with a knife.

Doing badges for the brownies - whose arm was the most weighed down by them.
Playing out all the time
Staying at my nan's house every Friday night and being allowed to stay up to watch Soap or Benson whilst steadily working my way through at least three packets of Golden Wonder Cheese'n'onion and a (glass) bottle of Cream Soda (which I would return empty to the Off Licence for 10p back)
Being dropped off at a field in the middle of nowhere by the side of the A3 with a few mates to muck about with the ponies all day - no mobiles to get in touch, no adults around anywhere!! Hiding in the trees when the occasional man climbed over the gate to use the field as a cut-through (to where, I have no idea!!)
I loved those cheap chocolate tools, even though their cocoa content was probably about 0.0001%

getting tea out of a funny dispenser on the wall and letting it brew with a cosey before straining it! that was a work of art to get right Smile

Gingeme · 19/06/2006 12:50

I used to stay at my Nans Friday nights too and my grandad used to buy me a packet of bakon Frazzles and a glass bottle of cream soda too. I remember she used to let me stay up till ten and I used to lay in bed listening to the 10 bongs at the beginning of it. Oh happy days.

Gingeme · 19/06/2006 12:52

Oh and being esnt to Romney with the Brownies when I was just 7! All the other Brownies got a badge for shoe cleaning but I couldnt get one cause I was wearing canvas wedge shoes Blush and playing the tune Popcorn on the recorder to get a badge.

sweetmonkey · 19/06/2006 12:53

mummydoc · 19/06/2006 15:03

anyone else wear really large school knickers ??? mine where bottle green and made from nasty synthetic material with a pocket on he front ...what was that for ...

Iklboo · 19/06/2006 15:11

Ah - brownies. I was thrown out of brownies for subversive behaviour Grin
We were all told to bring in shells, glue, felt tips etc for the next session. On the night we were told to make shell animals (mice being favourite). At the end of the night Brown Owl told us that we were to give them to her to be sold at her church fete for her church's funds.
I didn;t think this was fair and gathered a gang of the other girls together to go and tell her that we (I) thought she was being horrible and that we (I) didn't go to her church and so why should we (I) spend money buying the shells & stuff and then not getting anything out of it.
She collared my mum at the end of the night and told her I "wasn't brownie material" Blush
Dad thought it was hilarious - and I got to stay home after that and watch It's a Knockout every week instead!

Gingeme · 19/06/2006 15:52

Mine were navy blue. I remember trying to get out of pe by forgetting my kit and the teacher made me do it in my normal vest and knickers. Which was ok except we went to the park to play tennis! I live near that park still and shudder whenever we go.

lorina · 19/06/2006 17:03

Horrible plasticky fake leather sofas with big buttons all over. The poor old dog just used to slide off it ! and all of us stuck to it with sweat in the summer.

Actually all car seat were also made of that plastic stuff too and were burning hot. You had to sit on your cardie if you were wearing shorts.

And what about collecting ladybird books ? It was my ambition to have all of them but think I only ever got about 4.

2shoes · 19/06/2006 23:07

I used to love the ladybird books at school you read the story and then ansered questions.
alos at brownies they gave you a pic of something and you had to circle all the dangerous things.

themoon66 · 20/06/2006 10:00

Oh gawd. I remember having to do PE in vest and knickers when I forgot my kit. It would abuse nowadays. I was so humiliated.

I remember make animals from shells too. You could buy big bags of shells in blackpool. There were shops that sold nothing but shells. I suppose nowadays you are not allowed to take them from the beach.

mell2 · 20/06/2006 11:05

Never having homework until you started secondary school

Playing runouts and bulldog in the summer until it got dark

Having a bottle of pop (Corona) on a Sunday

Going to the paper shop and buying 20 no.6 tipped for mum Shock

Gingeme · 20/06/2006 11:34

Did anyone used to drink ice cream floats? Basicaly ice cream in lemonade or other fizzy pop. Mum never let us drink Coke cause it rots your liver! Atleast thats what she told us.........

themoon66 · 20/06/2006 11:35

We weren't allowed coke either. Mum said (and still does) that it's nasty chemically stuff. She always does her drama queen OTT shudder.

Gingeme · 20/06/2006 11:39

They obviously never read the ingredients thats in cherryade then but always laughed when you got a 'cherryade smile'. Keep drinking it and you'd have no teeth in that smile. Grin

mell2 · 20/06/2006 11:48

Do you remember taking the bottles back to get money

Or is that just me Blush am i that old!!!

themoon66 · 20/06/2006 11:54

Yes - Barrs and Corona bottles. I think was only 2p you got back on each one. But if you went around the village begging empties of people you make enough to buy a Mars Bar just about.

Gingeme · 20/06/2006 12:44

Did anyone have a 'pop man' who delivered the bottles to you on a Saturday?

themoon66 · 20/06/2006 13:12

Yeah. The cornona man with his rattley lorry.

themoon66 · 20/06/2006 13:13

And my dad used to say he remembered when pop bottles had rubber corks and wire round the neck to hold them in.

mell2 · 20/06/2006 13:28

omg i can't really remember that can i?

No, no, i must have been told about the corks.
(hobbles off on her zimmer frame)

prettybird · 20/06/2006 13:40

.... took a train and walked up a narrow dark alalleyway to my ballet lesson on my own from about 8

.... raspbpberry ripple icecream was a treat becasue it was more expensive than plain icecream

themoon66 · 20/06/2006 15:51
