So which one do you want to be Christmas number 1?
I have downloaded RATM.

I love RATM. Though I'm not too sure i can be bothered about what it Christmas no 1. As has been said by Flame, Rubberduck et al it doesn't really seem to matter any more.

God I miss those years of listening to Bruno Brookes to find out!!

I think 'a real music fan' is what someone considers themselves if they listen to music that isn't synthesised/mix/can't be done live.

Well more importantly I think it's not so much thinking "I'm a real music fan" but more thinking "they aren't a real music fan"

FWIW I'm a real music fan . I won't be downloading RATM (already have it) and I doubt very much I'll be aware what no.1 is, unless I happen across it in the news/conversation.

B x

ps Anyone know what is Bruno Brookes doing these days?

lou33 · 14/12/2009 09:17

i love killing in the name of

i already have it though

and i wont be buying the xmas song either

DisElfchanted3 · 14/12/2009 09:21

midnightexpress · 14/12/2009 09:32

I'm afraid I'm with UQD on this one. I would quite like something that isn't Joe McElderry to get Xmas Number One, but mainly because it's a rubbish song, and also because it would be quite funny, but the Christmas Number One has traditionally been a steaming pile of cr*p, so at least Joe will be following in a fine tradition in that respect.

I joined the Tim Buckley group last year on FB because I was annoyed that they'd ruined a very fine song, but this year I feel decidely meh about the whole thing.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 14/12/2009 10:57

I have downloaded RATM - it was 67p from play.com.
Probably about the same as a vote or two on the X factor, no?

Am I right in thinking all the contestants are just singers covering other people's songs? No singer-songwriters or bands?

Flame · 14/12/2009 12:31

I miss proper christmas songs with bells n stuff

UnquietDad · 14/12/2009 12:52

They cover well-known songs because it is easier with a known song to hear if they are doing it "well", I suppose.

Probably easier to sort out rights too. One band on BGT - those girls with the dyed hair, I forget what they were called - were desperate to do their own material, but were told it would be a copyright nightmare.

Why are people always "afraid" they agree with me?

Flame · 14/12/2009 12:53

I like agreeing with you Tis rare though

SnotBaby · 14/12/2009 13:02

I'm going to acquire RATM for the 2nd time in my life.

I did a bit of TEFL in the mid-90s. Staged a "jukebox jury" one day for my 15 year old German students and some rebel chose this. He was a bit put out that 1), I knew all the words, and 2), I thanked him for highlighting "fuck" for its linguistic interest value, being both a noun and a verb

ISaw3SkipsComeSailingIn · 14/12/2009 13:08

GO RAGE!

midnightexpress · 14/12/2009 13:17

UQD, it was an 'afraid' addressed at the OP for disagreeing politely, rather than an apology for agreeing with you. I find your opinions eminently sensible (except when I don't)

AngryFromManchester · 14/12/2009 13:20

surely a protest would be using ^new6 material, not something they have dragged out of their wardrobe all dusty

MerlinsBeard · 14/12/2009 13:28

Who is the protest aimed at?

If it's Simon Cowell then you picked the wrong song, he is connected to Epic as already mentioned below.

If it's Joe McElderry - just don't buy it. Is it so wrong for him to have the chance at a number one single after a) winning the talent competition he entered b) fulfilling his dream to be a recording artist and c) withstanding all the pressure and critism over the last 6 months? I'm not a fan of his and never was but he should be allowed to chase his dreams like the rest of us.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 14/12/2009 15:17

A protest has to be aimed at something in particular?! Arse!

Uh, how about... the world of manufactured music in general? Will that do?

I just can't see the point - I mean, if you have something to say, grab a guitar (/piano/backing band), write a song, and say it. But if all you have to say is 'I have a nice voice', why not just stick to karaoke night at the local pub?

Kaloki · 14/12/2009 15:27

Like art, sometimes it's just good to listen to something that sounds good, without it having to mean anything.

Disclaimer: I hate X-factor so am not supporting it in any way

GoldenGreen · 14/12/2009 15:33

I was 17 when the original RATM came out. The single was released on white vinyl and was a prized possession. I played it really loud (and then put the sound down during the sweary bit so as not to upset my mother).

I may well download it just to feel young again

AngryFromManchester · 14/12/2009 15:58

have they actually made anything for years?

I don't think simon cowell and the x factor are solely resonsible for manufactured music!

MattBellamysMuse · 14/12/2009 19:03

I already have the Rage Against the Machine song on my ipod. Do I have to buy it again?

MattBellamysMuse · 14/12/2009 19:14

It's only 29p on Amazon so I'll do it.
My reason is that I think Simon Cowell feels the Christmas number one spot is reserved for whatever crap artist he puts out that year. I'd like to help remind him that it's not.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 14/12/2009 19:42

Buying it on Amazon doesn't count apparently, it has to be over 40p to count for the charts...

purepurple · 15/12/2009 07:32

Update
Buying it on Amazon does count
Buying it this week does count
There is also a campaign to raise money for shelter too, running alongside it

OP posts:
Meglet · 15/12/2009 07:48

I'll be buying ratm. I've never downloaded anything before so this will be a good trial run as I was thinking about getting a mp3 player next year.

Flame · 15/12/2009 07:55

there are two versions on amazon - you need the more expensive one.

I have thought more about this whole thing.

I disagree that Joe deserves a #1 because he won a show tbh, imo the show is all about becoming a star and the second song is the one that counts. People buy the first song because of the show/christmas presents etc, tis the second one that shows if people actually like him. Did Leon even have a second song?

That said, I do feel mean about the whole thing, he's just a kid. Plus I feel a hypocrite. I am bleating on about xmas not having xmas songs any more, then downloading RATM. So, in defence of my beliefs I have instead downloaded this!

StealthPolarBear · 15/12/2009 08:18

aha
that explains a lot
wondered why i heard killing in the name of on the hairdressers radio yesterday
did they leave the sweary bits in?
will get dh to download ratm!

MerlinsBeard · 15/12/2009 10:20

He deserves the chance to be number one at least.
