So which one do you want to be Christmas number 1?
I have downloaded RATM.

MarsLady · 15/12/2009 20:23

Has anyone mentioned that RATM share the same record label as X Factor?

They have? I'll get my coat!

OrmIrian · 15/12/2009 20:42

Just a few times marslady

poshsinglemum · 15/12/2009 20:46

I like the RATM song but it's hardly Christmassy is it?
I know that it's a protest against commercialisation of the music industry blah de blah de blah but the music industry IS commercial. Even rage are.

I think that someone COMPLETELY different should make it. Mabe George Michael's xmas song.

MattBellamysMuse · 15/12/2009 20:55

I agree he doesn't 'deserve' a number one just for winning a talent contest. So many great bands out there never get a number one despite years of touring and making great records (not that they necessarily want a number one).

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 20:57

I would much rather see an unsigned band release a downloadable single where all proceeds went to charity. That IMO would be something worth having a campaign for.

TheWorldFamousKewcumber · 15/12/2009 21:59

Simon Cowell is too powerful?! He sells records and makes some light entertainment programmes. He makes a lot of money doing it, but he's hardly Rupert Murdoch!

whomovedmychocolate · 15/12/2009 22:08

If we all donate 5p each, maybe we can club together and buy Joe a personality though

MrsStig · 15/12/2009 22:12

Oh, I misread you post, whoMovedMyChocolate...I thought you were sugesting we buy Joe.

whomovedmychocolate · 15/12/2009 22:13

Oh god no, I've had enough pretty but useless christmas presents already this year

Saltire · 15/12/2009 22:18

Well I heard whatsisface singing "Let It Snow" on Chris Evans show earlier and thought it was good(ish) and very Christmassy.

Mika. Thats who it was

Stigaloid · 15/12/2009 22:23

I'd rather buy a song i like and i don't like either TBH

MattBellamysMuse · 15/12/2009 23:44

It's too late for this year, but next year there should be some proper Christmassy songs released. I'm sick of hearing the same old crap year after year (Slade et al)

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 23:50

Maybe next year we should start a campaign to get a more rock styled band (preferably not one that is already a major name) to release a charity Christmas single?

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 16/12/2009 00:36

I was always amaxed that there was nothing to acknoledge the death of Kirsty MacColl - if there is a space for a new xmas #1

natapillar · 16/12/2009 03:16

RATM for me. I love rock music and can tolerate quite a bit of pop music. but it seems that every bloody year simon cowell and his x-factor winner remove all fun from the xmas number 1.
it used to be cheesy music for xmas, like cliff richard,mr blobby and wham! but now it is the same crappy manufactured nonsense. and they ALWAYS sound the same!!

MrJustAbout · 16/12/2009 08:02

Definitely RATM.

The irony of buying a song that's anti-conformist because someone's told me to isn't lost on me ...

burstingtotalkaboutit · 16/12/2009 09:12

they might share the same record label, as i've mentioned, but apparently there are dark forces at work and RATM will not be allowed to take the number 1 spot!!! (cue dramatic music)

MattBellamysMuse · 16/12/2009 09:31

Why?

MattBellamysMuse · 16/12/2009 09:52

Just read this online:

"An official Amazon spokesman has confirmed all Amazon sales will definitely count towards the UK singles chart in their online forum. It is believed that this is due to the price Amazon pays for each MP3 being higher than the price the tracks are sold for on their website."

So the 29p RATM download does count, apparently.

electra · 16/12/2009 09:53

I've just bought RATM - am really sick of Simon Cowell.

angfirsttimer · 16/12/2009 10:07

Zane Lowe on radio 1 played Rage as his first song last night, and interspersed it with Cowell's quotes about how stupid the whole anti-xfactor thing was. Rather amusing but I did wonder whether the whole thing has actually turned into something more commercial than subversive! I bought the RATM track though.

totalmisfit · 16/12/2009 10:25

'some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses.... urgh'[cue guitar solo]

oh i'd forgotten how much i love that song... reminds me of my student days in the early part of this decade... going down the Electric Ballroom and moshing to this till my nose bled.

And it's weird cos since dd turned up in '06 i've become more of a folky-protest-song type, but reading the article in the indie the other day brought it all back to me; how if anything we need this song (and the genuine discontent that inspired it) more than ever nowadays. Not that anyone gives a stuff about what have meant once, long ago as it was being written. It's much more about sticking it to one particular man than the agents of social control in general!

still, if Simon Cowell is a figurehead for all that's wrong with popular culture in the here and now, i'll quite gladly add my 29p to the pot.
