So which one do you want to be Christmas number 1?
I have downloaded RATM.

I got carried away with italics there didn't I? Yup, guilt got the better of me with taking away the chance tbh.

morningpaper · 15/12/2009 10:45

This is silly - it is just lining Simon Cowell's pockets in another way!

Shoudl have chosen a charity single at least!

CarmenSanDiego · 15/12/2009 10:50

Oh, I'd love to see this on the Christmas TOTP.

But I can't buy it because all the sites know I'm in the US. Might need to investigate a proxy...

morningpaper · 15/12/2009 11:01

X Factor protestors to give money to Sony in slightly different way

A Sony spokesperson told us, ?This is terrible news for everyone at Sony Music Entertainment, honestly.?

?Earning more money than we expected to over the Christmas period is always difficult to explain to shareholders.?

arf

CarmenSanDiego · 15/12/2009 11:09

But it's not really about the money or Sony.

After hearing Cowell's rant on the BBC today in which he pretty much made out the Christmas number one was his (and his protege's) entitlement, I'm even more enthusiastic about this.

wannaBe · 15/12/2009 11:14

pointless exercise.

Don't you think that there are ways of ensuring that Joe is no1?

Am sure that Soni employees are all under strict instructions to ensure that it is..

Flame · 15/12/2009 11:16

?We have nothing against Joe McElderry personally, but if we wanted to listen to some murder a Miley Cyrus record, we?d buy a Miley Cyrus record.?

Love this too ?Imagine your mate was buying an old CD from you, but he put the cash in your wallet instead of your PayPal account. You?d be livid, and rightly so.?

MattBellamysMuse · 15/12/2009 11:56

Morningpaper, it's not about the money. It's about teaching Cowell that he alone does not control the charts.

morningpaper · 15/12/2009 12:04

He doesn't give a toss - he is making money either way! Woudln't surprise me if he orchestrated the whole thing

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 12:05

"After hearing Cowell's rant on the BBC today in which he pretty much made out the Christmas number one was his (and his protege's) entitlement, I'm even more enthusiastic about this."

The cynical part of me thinks that possibly he's saying this so that they sell even more records. It'll increase the sales of both X-factor whathisname and RATM. And therefore more record sales for Sony!

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 12:06

I think in all honesty he's in a win-win situation. But hey, fight the good fight, or whatecer it is..

MattBellamysMuse · 15/12/2009 12:11

I think the sales from these records will be a drop in the ocean of Cowell's fortune so I really don't think it's a marketing ploy to generate more sales.
It's about the power with him, the "I shall decide who's number one, not the British public".

Kerriko · 15/12/2009 12:24

"After hearing Cowell's rant on the BBC today in which he pretty much made out the Christmas number one was his (and his protege's) entitlement, I'm even more enthusiastic about this."

May I just point out that Cowell is a client of Max Clifford. Clifford's clientel tend to display traits that are completely manufactured for PR purposes. His ego, his arrogance, while some of it may be based in fact, is no doubt exagerrated as part of a very well executed plan by Clifford to turn Cowell into the celebrity he is now. Especially when you consider how long Cowell has been in the industry - and then consider that he only 'came to fame' when he became a client of Cliffords. Therefore, I'd treat every single thing he says as spurious.

Kerriko · 15/12/2009 12:25

Also, as an aside, I'd like to say that a charity single would make more sense at x-mas rather than lining the pockets of a major corporation that doesn't exactly have the christmas spirit.

sockmonkey · 15/12/2009 12:26

I don't really like songs with swearing in. I'd rather chose something actually christmassy.... that is if I ever bought singles. I'll pop my years old Christmas compilation on thanks.

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 12:30

Haha, I've now got a vision of a family sat round the tree singing "f* you I wont do what you tell me.. come on Grandma, headbang!"

*Swearing edited out for sockmonkey

Flame · 15/12/2009 12:33

love this

fillybuster · 15/12/2009 12:35

I happen to love the RATM song but suspect the whole thing is a bit of setup to generate lots more sales for Sony...X factor fans are going to be galvanised into supporting Joe (where they might not have actually bothered previously if he was a 'shoe in') and all us old indie rockers are supposedly going to strike a blow for 'alternative' rock. Yeah right.

IMoveTheStarsForNoOne · 15/12/2009 12:51

MattBellamysMuse it has to be over 49p (i think) to count, so the cheap one from amazon won't. Can't remember all the details but they're on the info bit of the website if you can be bothered to trawl for it.

joe is #1 on iTunes atm, but BBC say RATM is at the top. Who knows.

lilibet · 15/12/2009 12:52

One of the times in my left when I felt like a real 'grown up'was when i realised that not only did I not know what was Christmas number one but I actually didn't care.

But i am very sad that for those who haven't yet 'grown up' (regardless of their age!) this particular bit of Christmas magic and tradtion has gone to to the monoply of the X Factor winner.

I have no argument with The X Factor, I find it compulsive viewing once the auditions are over, I find some of them a tad manipulative , but love the latter stages.

So for that reason I am RATM and for that reason I bought Terry and Aled singing Little Drummer boy last year.

(and I voted for Olly anyway!)

lilibet · 15/12/2009 12:52

Times in my left ??? [fblush}

LIFE

Fibilou · 15/12/2009 12:59

As I love RATM and can't abide X factor type crap I'm supporting RATM

MattBellamysMuse · 15/12/2009 13:10

Imove, it was actually the Facebook page that suggested Amazon at 29p. I haven't downloaded yet so will get it from iTunes.
This could all go tits up if the Facebookers all download the Amazon 29p one because it's cheapest.

golgi · 15/12/2009 13:19

I downloaded RATM although I have it already. It annoys me that X factor being Christmas number one has been a foregone conclusion for years.

But I do see the irony in "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me - unless it's telling me to download this song"

The Facebook group has raised a fair bit of money for Shelter at the same time, so it's not all completely pointless.

Kaloki · 15/12/2009 13:20

"The Facebook group has raised a fair bit of money for Shelter at the same time"

That's good to hear.
