The Jeff Buckley version is so beautiful, maybe everyone should download that instead?

Len is fab, saw him at MEN arena couple weeks ago, he is 74 and still dancing round the place, he was v charming.

Alex is just far to warbly for my liking im afraid. Mind you Leona Lewis's cover of Run I loved, even though I was a bit loathe to admit it!

HassledElf · 18/12/2008 18:48

Article on whose is the better version - and about the lyrics - here

wannaBe · 18/12/2008 18:51

oh good it's not just me then?

Agree totally pruners - the Jeff Buckley version is horrible.

notnewbutshy · 18/12/2008 18:51

woops, forgot I was in disguise!

Good article Elf, though I want to claim the 'you dont care for music' joke as my own! I said it first in RL

MerlinsBeard · 18/12/2008 18:52

I love this line by Cohen in that article: This is my song. Everyone else just borrows it.

have to say that i haven't heard him sing it, will youtube it later (not up for a blub fest right now)

DH and I clash over this one - he's firmly of the Buckley camp, whereas I think the verse

"even though it all went wrong
I'd stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my lips but
Hallelujah"

just completes the song, and any version without it SUCKS.

I am, obviously, of the 1984 Cohen persuasion.

misdee · 21/12/2008 20:01

#2.

MerlinsBeard · 22/12/2008 11:58

thats not bad going and leonard cohen is #36 so the chart ppl will have had top play the same song over and over

lingle · 22/12/2008 19:55

enjoyed unquiet dad's post and the person who said "If ever there was a song in which a power key change was not required it is this". Couldn't Cohen have inserted a "no key change" clause?

Hope the Buckley version isn't played too much on the radio as it is dangerous for drivers - the first time I heard it I was driving and had to pull to the side of the road - couldn't focus on anything else and couldn't turn it off.

MerlinsBeard · 23/12/2008 10:36

I FINALLY heard the leonard cohen version....and i don't even like it a little bit!

Fillyjonk · 23/12/2008 10:49

this is so WRONG

you do actually need a tragic story to go with the singing of hallelujah, else it doesn't work

mayorquimby · 24/12/2008 09:35

although i'll admit a guilty pleasure.if diana vickers had won the x factor i'd have bought a version of her singing it as i loved her version in boot camp

smartiejakeonachristmascake · 24/12/2008 10:30

I'm with you fillyjonk Leonard Cohen should stick to writing songs- he can't sing for toffee!

Dropdeadfred · 24/12/2008 10:33

I think Diana had one of the most false, put on voices ever..what's wth the semi-iish warble? nothing like her real voice

that version was awful...sorry

smartiejakeonachristmascake · 24/12/2008 10:37

Just looked at the Diana version myself- my ears are bleeding!

Dropdeadfred · 24/12/2008 10:42

LOL

UnquietDad · 24/12/2008 10:54

You should all go away and listen to the lovely Amy MacDonald - proper new singer, proper new songs, didn't need a karaoke TV show to get her album noticed. here

mayorquimby · 24/12/2008 11:37

i know she's rubbish and fake.hence her being my guilty pleasure as it is most certainly a crime.don't know why i like her even mybe i have a crush on her.

slayerette · 24/12/2008 11:41

article says it all about why I hate Alexandra's version of the song - the line about hating the song until she put her own 'Whitney Houston spin' on it sums up why I can't bear her or her bloody warbly version

I just hope she has the good grace to do a Leon and disappear from sight after this song.
