The Jeff Buckley version is so beautiful, maybe everyone should download that instead?

I'm with you twig - I just shouted at the PC that it was Leonard Cohen who did it and no one touches him.

I wish I could afford to see him in concert with the greatest aussie song writer ever BUT it would cost dh and I a fortune!!!! He is playing with Paul Kelly here in Brissy next year.

eidsvold · 16/12/2008 03:22

Although Bon Jovi's version is quite good

here

Is anyone else having problems getting on to the Jeff Buckley for Xmas group ?
When I try and access it, It's saying 'group unavailable'
I wonder if Mr Cowell has anything to do with this.....

NorkyButNice · 16/12/2008 11:18

I find it incredibly sad that people will download multiple copies of a track in order to prevent another very talented act from reaching number one, purely because you don't think she's worthy of covering a song that your favoured artist covered in the first place?

You all come across as very bitter and snobby.

mayorquimby · 16/12/2008 12:56

"in order to prevent another very talented act from reaching number one"

can anyone else spot the glaring mistake in this sentence?

also while JB's version might be my favourite i'm a big big fan of john cale's re-written version and of course having been to leonard cohen live this year ( for all of you ) his version live was just a bit special

NorkyButNice · 16/12/2008 21:38

OK - you don't think she's talented - your opinion. I do - my opinion.

But I would guess that on an average week, you don't go out and buy multiple copies of another act's music purely to stop someone you don't happen to like reaching number one.

Because that would be ridiculous, but seems to be what everyone is doing in this instance. Why?

MegBusset · 16/12/2008 21:51

Sony BMG owns the publishing rights to the song so they will be laughing all the way to the bank whichever version you choose to download.

MegBusset · 16/12/2008 21:51

PS Len's version > Jeff's version >>>>>>>>>> anyone else's.

compo · 16/12/2008 22:04

they should have done an orginal song like Leona and Will Young

smartiejakeonachristmascake · 16/12/2008 22:09

Sorry but Leonard should stick to writing the songs- he can't sing for toffee!

Love Jeff Buckley's version he's such a tortured soul.

I'm fond of John Cale's version too but this is my fave version.

UnquietDad · 17/12/2008 10:25

She sings "Over-FREW ya". Ugh.

Barking · 17/12/2008 10:34

Well the facebook group is gathering momentum, now has over 75000 people.

The radio and newspapers have picked up on the story and Jon Snow on Channel 4 news will be talking to Christian O' Connell tonight.

Jeff's version is now no.3 but the group is still pushing for the no.1

Yes the money goes to Sony, but its not about that, its about how the song is suppose to be sung and nobody (imo) can sing it like Jeff

Barking · 17/12/2008 10:39

Hallelujah Radio 2 Programme if anyones interested.

There are many versions on there including another version of the Jeff Buckley one which is breathtaking.

Barking · 17/12/2008 10:43

Jeff Buckley BBC4 Documentary

Over 100,000 people have now joined the facebook campaign.....

We3kingsoforientRaahh · 18/12/2008 16:11

Compo- Leona and Will both did covers for their winning song- Will's was originally by Westlife and i think Leona's was the American idol winners song for kelly Clarkson. So did Leon (mariah and Witney). In fact, i'm (almost certain), al the winners have covered something. Hear'say and Girls aloud both recorded original material, afaik.[reality music show geek emoticon]

The difference there being that all these songs were forgettable rubbish, that no one cared about, so covering them was not an issue.

Part of me feels a bit sorry for Alex- she has been handed a song that isn't her style (it's a song that very few COULD do justice to, imo) and means a lot to many people. It is huge. I doubt it is something she had heard of before the series! And, yes, the 'over FREW ya ' bit grates on me too!

We3kingsoforientRaahh · 18/12/2008 16:14

pmsl at UQD- 'giving it some welly'- a very apt description of what Alex does- to everything she sings!!

wannaBe · 18/12/2008 16:22

alexandra's single had had 150000 downloads in the first two days alone - there's no way anyone is going to beat that.

Personally I think it's just boring now that the xfactor winner is always the Christmas number 1.

MerlinsBeard · 18/12/2008 16:24

lol i joined the FB group

Its #2. #12 and #24 at the mo and leonard coehn is #32 according to itunes.

wannabe, i agree- i remember when the xmas number one 'race' was a big thing (and working in a record shop a huge money thing,too)- and there were usually a few contenders. Even a few dodgy novelty records made it interesting. I wouldn't mind so much if they at least covered something festive!!.

Barking · 18/12/2008 18:30

Hey Mumofmonsters - be proud I didn't even know what facebook was until last weekend, I just think that the way Jeff Buckley sang that song was in such an incredibly tender way that to hear any other version just sounds very wrong, or as one poster put it 'my ears are now bleeding'

The group has posted a link to an audio recording of Simon Cowell admitting that Jeff's version is his favourite.

Alex sounded great. I keep hearing it on Choice and I'm liking it!

Barking · 18/12/2008 18:43

Are you sure you were listening to Jeff?

Someone on facebook was blathering on leaving poor Alex alone and it not being Jeff Cohen's song anyway

Maybe its like the gosling complex where you become attached to the first one you hear and it leaves its imprint....
