The Jeff Buckley version is so beautiful, maybe everyone should download that instead?

Barking · 14/12/2008 22:21

Jeff Buckley for Xmas No.1 Facebook group all the info is there, I think we can dowload it from tomorrow as this is the week that determines who will be no.1 for christmas

JennstarOfWonder · 14/12/2008 22:24

Dh played me a Dylan version today. Oh dear. MB I agree about his voice. I am also informed LC took 2 years to write it and at one point had 80 verses....If you are interested?

Barking · 14/12/2008 22:24

bum, I've just checked the itunes store and Alexandria is no.1, Jeff is no.4

SparklyBaubleFeast · 14/12/2008 22:26

alexandra's vesions is terrible and they will play it and play it.

Barking · 14/12/2008 22:26

Jennstar, thanks for that

Mincepiewater · 14/12/2008 22:29

Until last night, I loved every version of that song I've heard (except LC himself who, as a singer, makes a brilliant songwriter!). Not any more. Eeek. If ever there was a song in which a power key change was not required it is this.
Overproduced garbage.

My only consolation is the thought that Leonard Cohen is getting pots of money (I hope) for it.

Oovavu · 14/12/2008 22:35

It's a beautiful song but made even more so by the lyrics and the sentiment behind them. I just don't think it suits a young girl's voice knowing what the words are

Barking · 14/12/2008 22:50

Just read that ITV buy the X factor single in the thousands to avoid embarrassment of it not reaching the top spot.

theramones · 14/12/2008 23:09

I went to see Leonard Cohen the other week, and he was fab, at least he will get some money out of it.

Ros3 · 14/12/2008 23:21

I remember reading somewhere that Leonard Cohen admitted the Jeff Buckley version is better than his own.

SparklyGothKat · 14/12/2008 23:51

I hate the fact that the X-factor is timed to hit the xmas no.1 spot. I have never brought or downloaded any of the x-factor singles and I certainly don't plan to now. If I could work out how to download JB's version I would.

serenity · 15/12/2008 00:17

Alexandra huffs don't like the real Mariah Carey, so can't stand a wannabe covering one of my most favourite songs.

FWIW - DH being a Cohen fan (saw him at O2 and the Albert Hall a couple of weeks ago) prefers the original and me being a soppy old bat, loves Jeff Buckley's version which makes be go all wobbly and weak-kneed.

serenity · 15/12/2008 00:18

I hate that I get confused between here, LJ and FB. That shouldn't be in bold

Tinker · 15/12/2008 00:24

Heard her version today on teh radio and it isn't sooo different to Leonard's really. It's a standard now anyway; has a life of its own. Long may Leonard continue to collect the royalties

Dig those backing singers

I prefer KD Langs version myself.

FabioTheLiterateCat · 15/12/2008 02:06

I can't be arsed to find it but Rufus Wainwright's version is triffic.

misdee · 15/12/2008 08:41

downloaded

SpaceTrain · 15/12/2008 09:01

Imo, nothing can outdo Leonard singing Hallelujah at Glastonbury this year. It had grown men weeping.

see here

Barking · 15/12/2008 09:34

I've downloaded 2 copies this morning.
Jeff is still no.4 on itunes

UnquietDad · 15/12/2008 10:04

Just heard it on the radio. It started bearably. Her voice is OK. The backing was nice and sparse.

Halfway through there is a CRASH and a key-change (gawd help us) and she shifts into full-on Mariah. This is, to clarify, Not A Good Thing, Miss Carey being, to my ears, the most talentless warbling tuneless bint ever to come out of the USA (and, blimey, there is some competition). There is also a CHOIR and full orchestral backing. The last half is all done in Giving It Some Welly mode and it is awful.
