The Jeff Buckley version is so beautiful, maybe everyone should download that instead?

my local radio station played jeff's version this morning

UnquietDad · 15/12/2008 10:12

Jeff's version is already creeping up the charts...

serenity · 15/12/2008 10:12

This is why I don't listen to radio stations that would play that sort of thing UnquietDad.

I'm just grateful I live in London, where I can choose to listen to guitar based noisy stuff all day instead

Jux · 15/12/2008 10:30

downloading jb's version now - he's up to no.2 on iTunes, with lc 3rd (I've downloaded his as well though I think I have 4 or 5 versions in various formats already).

Suspect that in the face of the massive cheating by ITV, pipping the vile alex to the no.1 post is a forlorn hope.

(Serenity, would you like to borrow my dh - he will play guitar noisy stuff all day for you )

I love this quote from Owen Atkinson on Jeff Buckley for Xmas no.1 facebook:

"isnt it interesting that the song is about musical formulas and starts with a wry self-referential nod toward its own formulaic anthemic quality that admits all ecstacy, sexual or religous is contrived and manufactured, and that is what x factor is all about but then there is probably a big gap between the secret chord that david played to please the lord, and a tacky gospel choir to keep your mother-in-law happy.
interesting also (whoever wins) to have a openly religous (and sexual) jewish song as christmas number one".

Jux · 15/12/2008 10:32

lol

Barking · 15/12/2008 10:38

Jux, is he definately no.2? I've just looked and it still says no.4....

harpsiheraldangelssing · 15/12/2008 10:44

Kathryn Williams version

I think this is truly sublime
skip to 3.15secs

I've emailed the group direct as another poster on the site has pointed out there are now two versions of Jeff's song in the itunes chart, one at no.4 the other at no. 63.

I hope both count, one is a longer version.
Haven't heard anything yet....

Just read that Cohen said of Hallelujah that he was born to write it but Jeff Buckley was born to sing it. High praise indeed!

WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 15/12/2008 14:19

SpaceTrain thanks for that link, I now feel educated! Can't believe I didn't know who Leonard Cohen was before I did this thread, am now off to download the Cohen and Buckley versions. Can hear a version on Radio one in background as I type..

This is utterly pathetic.

southeastastra · 15/12/2008 14:21

it's already been covered up and down the country by thousands. can think of other things to get my knickers in a twist about

WalkingInAWonderStuffingLand · 15/12/2008 14:22

Anyone heard 'My lamb boonha'? PMSL (sorry no idea how to spell said curry)

PenelopePitstops · 15/12/2008 14:36

walking i heard this......very funnY!

UnquietDad · 15/12/2008 15:15

Pretty ironic that the song includes the line "you don't reslly care for music, do ya?" That ought to be on Cowell's grave...

seeker · 15/12/2008 15:22

Haven't read the thread, but just in case nobody points it out, it's Leonard Cohen's Hallaluja!

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 15/12/2008 15:24

they have, it's Leonard Cohen's but the Jeff Buckley version is lovely

christMAScomesbutonceayear · 15/12/2008 15:26

Rufus W's is nice, but he sings through his gritted teeth too much

newknickerssecretsanta · 15/12/2008 16:55

I agree harpsi, I heard KW do it live at the Union Chapel about a year ago and I cried

harpsiheraldangelssing · 15/12/2008 17:34

oh I was at that gig. it was great wasn't it?
I think she has an incredible talent. her songs have helped me a lot.

TheMuppetsChristmasMuggle · 15/12/2008 20:01

twig i thought of Shrek when i heard it too lol

Tinker · 15/12/2008 23:53

Agree with dittany. And I have seen LC perform this live. For all those loving JB's version, do you really want "the masses" to love your song? I hate it when "my song" becomes a commercial hit by the artist I love.

GrimmaTheNome · 16/12/2008 00:10

I've only ever heard it on Shrek. So its forever associated with a mournful dragon and ogre but I think it can stand it.

Whether it can stand x-refactoring I don't know.
