Heart "All I wanna do is make love to you" - where she shags a stranger just to get pregnant.

Or the incomparable Hazzard. Always had my suspicions about what he did with her down by that river.

Anyone else like songs like this??? Grin

"Fairytale of New York" - not a direct linear narrative story, but it's there.

Did we ever find out who did it in "Hazard"? Was it the Sheriff?

Son of a Preacherman - Dusty Springfield

Jolene - Dolly Parton

"I don't wanna play house"

Bobbie Gentry - Ode to Billie Joe. What was thrown off the Tallahassee bridge?

Don't You Want Me - Human League

Balamory Theme Song Wink

I have no idea what was happening in talahasee.

Loads of Kate Bush songs:

Wedding List (groom shot dead at the altar, bride takes revenge then kills herself)

Experiment IV (scientists create a sound that kills, accidentally unleash it, say 'we were only following orders')

There Goes A Tenner (bank job goes wrong)

She's the queen of storytelling in songs. Otherwise I love Haitian Divorce by Steely Dan, simply marvellous.

Georgimama · 11/12/2010 16:14

I love story telling songs.

Two Little Boys and Under Your Thumb are both haunting in different ways. And you can't beat Puff the Magic Dragon.

Georgimama · 11/12/2010 16:14

Oh and that girl in All I Wanna Do clearly had form - she'd been to that hotel before!

Georgimama · 11/12/2010 16:15

Another good Kate Bush story song is Babushka.

UnpureAsTheDrivenSHOW · 11/12/2010 16:17

Widecombe Fair by Show Of Hands which is about a boy that travels to Widecombe Fair oddly enough but never makes it (murdered on the moors).

Actually folk music is storytelling anyway really. I love songs like The Blue Cockade and Pleasant and Delightful. Generally, one death per song though.

This one though... folk, a story, rude and it's v funny: by Kate Rusby.

PuppyMonkey · 11/12/2010 16:18

Let's not forget the Piña Colada song either!

Georgimama · 11/12/2010 16:19

Pina Colada? Do you mean Copacabana? Which is also a good story song.

onimolap · 11/12/2010 16:21

"I don't like Mondays" (Boomtown Rats), about the first (?) random school shooting.

Or, not exactly what you were asking about, the video of the war in Bosnia set to Seal's "Crazy".

Dylthan · 11/12/2010 16:24

"the cats in the cradle" really pulls on the heartstrings

melezka · 11/12/2010 16:25

There's an early Chris de Burgh album Xmas Blush called Spanish Train which is pretty much all stories - some of them rather haunting I thought.
Agree about folk music.
And I like Kate Bush's Cloudbusting.

PuppyMonkey · 11/12/2010 16:29

Piña Colada song is totally different to copacabana. About a man who answers an advert for a woman who wants to meet someone " who likes piña colada and getting caught in the rain. If you're not ino health food, if you're into champagne. " etc. Although I am an old gimmer, so you might not remember it.

The point being, it ends up being his "own lovely lady" in the end.

OP posts:
Georgimama · 11/12/2010 16:30

Oh. Okay, well Copacabana is also a good story song then!

Oh, it's Talahatchie Bridge. Duh. Did know that really...

PuppyMonkey · 11/12/2010 16:40

Ooh ooh. What about " Hello, this is joanie." where she dies in the crash but he keeps playing her answerphone message!!!

OP posts:
PuppyMonkey · 11/12/2010 16:41

Said, I don't think we ever find out do we?

no, there's no definitive expanation it seems

UnpureAsTheDrivenSHOW · 11/12/2010 16:43

I'd rather pull off my own arm than admit this in rl, but Chris de fecking Burgh's Spanish Train album is superb.

nickeldonkeyonadustyroad · 11/12/2010 16:46

in Hazzard, I think she ran away from the town - they used to go down to the river and talk about how they were going to escape. so she did and he didn't, so he got blamed for her disappearing.

I have loads of favourite songs with stories, but typically I can't think of any now!
