Heart "All I wanna do is make love to you" - where she shags a stranger just to get pregnant.

Or the incomparable Hazzard. Always had my suspicions about what he did with her down by that river.

Anyone else like songs like this??? Grin

Did Sting do a version of "Hung My Head"? Was the original in a really strange time signature?

GMajor7SwansASwimming · 12/12/2010 21:25

'Train In The Distance' is another story song which is well worth a listen for Paul Simon fans.

ilsalund · 12/12/2010 21:28

Also oldies such as Barbara Allen and Molly Malone.

ilsalund · 12/12/2010 21:46

Lorrie Morgan - Something in Red

JingleBelleDameSansMerci · 12/12/2010 21:58

I love nearly all of these (don't know some of the more recent ones Blush).

Just had to look up a song I used like. It's called Jessie and is about a woman who always calls a man just when he's got over her. There's a cat called Moses in it too. I'd completely forgotten about it until I read this thread.

GMajor7SwansASwimming · 12/12/2010 22:13

That's 'Jessie' by Joshua Kaddison, Jingle.

Not really a story song, but well worth a mention as it really is a beautiful song Smile

ChristmasTrulyReigns · 12/12/2010 23:22

This one's a bit Blush, but I was young and naive at the time!

Through The Barricades.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/12/2010 16:57

What a brilliant thread - am hastening to spotify with this little lot.

GMajor/Jessie - I heard on the radio that that song was written about Sarah Jessica Parker (not wanting to spoil it or anything :))

Simple Twist of Fate by Bob Dylan - actually most of the Blood on the Tracks album, Tangled Up in Blue is a great story, as is Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts. He's good at that folk-style ballady thing.

And of course was based on a true case.

Has anyone mentioned Tom Waits? is about an old man calling up his old girlfriend after 40 years, still in love with her. has a good story too.

There's a band called Tunng who have a brilliant song called "Jenny Again" which is narrated by the victim of a killing, telling the story of the killer escaping with the dead man's girlfriend and starting a new life elsewhere.

Did someone mention Caledonia?

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 13/12/2010 17:04

god I know I'm going to kill this thread, but there are two songs with quite similar stories,

and

where a middle aged sleazebag gets tricked by the gorgeous young backpackers he is trying to seduce.
ChristmasTrulyReigns · 13/12/2010 19:58

Thanks for all the links on this thread - I'm going to have a busy night enjoying new music whilst avoiding writing Christmas cards.

Xmas Grin

I'd just like to add two more:

Dignity by Deacon Blue

Somewhere down the Crazy River by Robbie Robertson (although I really have no idea what the story is - it's an amazing tune) I have yet to meet anyone who has heard of RR, except for the boy who introduced me to him whilst I played hookey from A Level maths and was educated (ahem) in his bedroom on a Wednesday afternoon.

sharbie · 13/12/2010 20:00

love somewhere down the crazy river

singarainbow · 13/12/2010 20:26

What about Mike and the Mechanics, Living Years?

jamaisjedors · 13/12/2010 20:46

GOD I LOVE Simple Twist of fate.

I have been listening to it since I was 18 and am still not sick of it.

On a different note, "When the Sun Goes down" Arctic Monkeys (scummy man/prostitute story).

David Bowie: Life on Mars.

FiveOrangePips · 13/12/2010 20:47

missmiss that is the song that I thought of first, I Hung My Head - it is brilliant, but lots of Johnny Cash songs are great storiesSmile Give My love to Rose sprung to mind too.

Bob Dylan's Hurricane is good.
