Oh bollocks. I've just signed up to a series of kids activity sessions. I'm 37 and I don't have kids

I'm a member of a martial arts club that do adult and children's classes.

They sent an email yesterday with different summer offers.

One of their offers was six activity sessions (martial arts based sessions and more general social sessions) over July and August. The activities are: A craft afternoon, A movie evening, A sparring workshop, A small-group training session, and A trip to a local adventure playground.

I thought it looked great and so I signed up.

Then I forwarded onto a friend who pointed out that it's for children to keep them entertained over the six weeks holidays. It's not intended for 37 year-old, professional, child-free women.

In my defense (geddit) - I've done loads of non-martial arts stuff with the women's class including craft evenings, book groups, trips out etc. Plus, I kind of forget that the club does children's classes because I'm never there when the kids are going in or out. So, I'm telling myself it was an easy mistake to make.

I need to ring the club and tell them I want to cancel but I feel like such a bloody twat.

I can't lie and tell them I booked it for a child who's changed their mind. They know I don't have a child. Bollocks.

I once entered a childrens fun run, my husband was doing a half marathon and there was an additional 1 mile fun run, I thought why not and signed up. I got as far as going to the sign in desk on the day got my number etc. Got a very strange look from the desk lady (which I thought was because I was a bit fat and she didn’t think I could run a mile 😂).

Went to the start line and realised it was just a large group of 5 - 10 year olds. I did not run, mostly because I was afraid I’d come last 😄.

😄 Love this. Honestly you’re right, there’s a high chance loads would have easily beaten you. I used to ‘race’ with the 10year olds I taught most outdoor PE lessons and half of them were always ahead of me. No one races like kids!

Stompythedinosaur · 13/07/2023 13:12

This is brilliant!

I'd just tell them the truth! Front it out. Everyone will see the funny side.

HighKicking · 13/07/2023 13:12

Hilarious to read others' adult/child activities mix-ups.

I'm going to call this afternoon and I'll keep you posted.

Honestly this has made my day 🤣

Probably showing my age, but Rodney and the children's painting competition...

Well done OP!
If it was me I think I'd have to lie and say I booked it for some kid as a treat not realizing they are away on holiday for 3 of the dates - or whatever. Make up some bullshit.

12roundsofwhitelowfatspread · 13/07/2023 13:18

I think persuade a few mates to go too!

winelove · 13/07/2023 13:24

This has made me laugh so much!

empatheticpretzel · 13/07/2023 13:24

I dont know how easy it is to book it but tell them it was a computer glitch

HighKicking · 13/07/2023 13:25

Yes, absolutely reminds me of Rodney @DogInATent 😂Sadly, I can't pretend to just be a child for these sessions.

@12roundsofwhitelowfatspread I think the sparring and the small group training would put most of my friends off. Can you image: "Here, I accidentally booked a load of children's activities but it'll be laugh. Wanna come. It's £75. And one of the activities is getting punched in the head" 😅

A few years ago when adult colouring books/mindfulness colouring etc were very fashionable by friend did a colouring sheet at a local tourist attraction and filled in her name and address etc. Amazingly she won a prize and was very excited- until her DH spotted the list of prize winners and age categories and saw that she'd won the 14-16 category. Apparently there were age boxes to tick so she ticked 'over 14' without reading properly and seeing that the competition was for under 16s. It seems that being asked for an age, and not having an 'over 18' category did not ring any alarm bells. She took her 15 year old niece along to collect the prize though!

Why don't you offer it through your local foodbank to pass on to someone who's child would appreciate it? Less of an embarrassing thing than cancelling because it's not for grown ups. Then all you need to do is get the foodbank to tell the club the name of the person & their details.

tinselvestsparklepants · 13/07/2023 13:48

If you lived near me I'd sign up to go with you. Why should kids have all the fun?

Blueroses99 · 13/07/2023 13:49

I have sort of done the opposite… as fresh graduates, 3 of us booked a ‘Gold’ holiday thinking it would be a bit nicer than our backpacking trips. We didn’t realise until we got there that ‘Gold’ unofficially meant golden oldies. If you added up our ages, we fit the average age of the other guests!

LivinDaylights · 13/07/2023 13:53

This definitely brightened my day 🤣🤣 just imagining op loving life on the adventure playground 😆

TeeBee · 13/07/2023 12:27

That is really cute. I'd just blazen it out and say 'Oh blimey, just realised this was for kids! I've booked myself on as it sounded so exciting! Can you cancel me but let me know if you organise anything similar for adults?'. They'll absolutely see the funny side. Its a compliment to them really.

that absolutely.

But OP, this must be the only thread where I genuinely laughed, this is genius 😂

1992H · 13/07/2023 13:54

This has made me smile!
I totally agree that it sounds great though.
I’d love places to do stuff like this for adults

Eudaimonia5 · 13/07/2023 13:54

Still laughing about the lady who went to a children's crafting session and they put her on her own table 🤣

I do think that event organisers should put on fun activities for adults. OPs activity day sounds great, I'd sign up. I've seen a few activity sessions for school holidays recently and thought I'd love to do that. I've seen adult classes too but they don't sound anywhere near as fun as the children's ones.

It might very well be for members only - and the club already has insurance and everything sorted.

This is such a lovely idea but its for club members only. because of the sparring workshop.

I think some of their other offers - without sparring sessions - are open to friends as well but the one I signed up for is just for members.

Cancel but do it in a really high pitched voice like you're a kid?

DaisyThistle · 13/07/2023 14:01

making a picture of my own head with penne

Properly laughed out loud at this! Thank you. I am stressed about work and really needed a giggle.

Is this you?

😆

Lovesacake · 13/07/2023 14:06

I once made the same mistake with a synchronised swimming course. My friend and I were the only two adults in a pool full of small children, we styled it out but god knows what their parents thought of us thrashing around trying to look graceful 😂
