Oh bollocks. I've just signed up to a series of kids activity sessions. I'm 37 and I don't have kids

I'm a member of a martial arts club that do adult and children's classes.

They sent an email yesterday with different summer offers.

One of their offers was six activity sessions (martial arts based sessions and more general social sessions) over July and August. The activities are: A craft afternoon, A movie evening, A sparring workshop, A small-group training session, and A trip to a local adventure playground.

I thought it looked great and so I signed up.

Then I forwarded onto a friend who pointed out that it's for children to keep them entertained over the six weeks holidays. It's not intended for 37 year-old, professional, child-free women.

In my defense (geddit) - I've done loads of non-martial arts stuff with the women's class including craft evenings, book groups, trips out etc. Plus, I kind of forget that the club does children's classes because I'm never there when the kids are going in or out. So, I'm telling myself it was an easy mistake to make.

I need to ring the club and tell them I want to cancel but I feel like such a bloody twat.

I can't lie and tell them I booked it for a child who's changed their mind. They know I don't have a child. Bollocks.

I signed up for a children's craft session once, due to the nature of it I didn't assume it was just for children...I didn't find out until I got there and they got me my own table to do it on. I still cringe about it now 😂

That's so funny, but I'll admit I see activities that look like fun and they turn out to be for kids. I'd like to do some of the events at my local country park but I'm worried I'd be the only one there without kids and look like a wally.

Tell them you were having a nephew to stay but it's been cancelled.

The adventure playground though? Really, what did you think that was about?

I don't think adventure playground is the right word. It's basically a park, a stones throw from the club, which has some really massive climbing equipment and a zip wire.
We've done training at the park before. And one of the women's classes had a picnic there last summer.
So, no, it didn't strike me as being too strange.

Maybe it should've done.

It's a bit embarrassing but loads of people would have made that mistake. I was always going up to the front of church to get colouring stuff to do during the sermon because the vicar had announced that children could do that. Nobody told me it was meant to be for under 7's. Actually I started a trend as a few more teenagers decided that colouring was more fun than listening to the sermon!

someone at one of the children's centre baby groups once had to be gently told that at 32 they were too old to attend the young parents group (12 years too old actually). Now that would be more embarrassing.

I don't know that niece/nephew will work. The people at the club know me quite well and I don't think I've ever mentioned a niece or nephew.

That is really cute. I'd just blazen it out and say 'Oh blimey, just realised this was for kids! I've booked myself on as it sounded so exciting! Can you cancel me but let me know if you organise anything similar for adults?'. They'll absolutely see the funny side. Its a compliment to them really.

Don't feel a pillock, its really quite sweet. To soften the blow, you could always offer to help organise such a thing for adults or offer to gauge interest among an adult cohort. Let's face it, we're all looking to earn extra money right now and you may do them a favour making them realise this is a potentially good idea for adults too.

I'm not sure I could handle the shame, though, when the people I train with at adult classes arrive to pick up their children, and see me wedged into a infant school table making a picture of my own head with penne.

How do you sign up? Can you say you clicked on the wrong offer and actually wanted to sign up for something else?
