Can I make ice cream from shrews?

The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us 4 shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker.

The shrews are already dead so I'm assuming IANBU.

Am I the only person who just feeds my cat Whiskers cat food? 🤷‍♀️😂

(And perhaps the occasional tin of tuna when I'm feeling generous)

GaslitlikeaVictorianparlour · 08/08/2022 19:04

Not poisonous, just minging then 🤣

edenhills · 08/08/2022 19:06

Shrews taste terrible. That's why the cats didn't eat them.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/08/2022 19:09

Ice cubes to lick would surely be easier but liking the fish sorbet ideas. And this thread is mumsnet gold.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/08/2022 19:12

Shrew ice cream with a pilchard sorbet amuse bouche? OP you are a genius and my cats want to move in with you.
I really should have flambeed the recently murdered goldcrest and served it on top if a crepe for them...

Yourearealboy · 08/08/2022 19:14

cats are lactose intolerant so can't eat mice cream

mice cream 🤣

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 08/08/2022 19:17

Ratonastick. 😟🤢

WorkshyHorsefly · 08/08/2022 19:17

There's cat slaves and there's Cat Slaves. You, op, are the capitalised version.

butterpuffed · 08/08/2022 19:18

Make them a tasty tiramashrew instead , less fiddly .

SquareButt · 08/08/2022 19:18

Why do people say girl cat and boy cat? I don't hear this about dogs??
I would say female or male cat.

I dread to think you got your nose close to that mouse to ascertain that it smelt fresh. Just yuck.

Georgyporky · 08/08/2022 19:21

Wasn't Kat the main character in The Taming of the Shrew?

God, I thought penis beaker would be the most disgusting thing I’d ever read on mumsnet. Shrew ice cream 🤮

😂😂😂

CHIRIBAYA · 08/08/2022 18:42

Shrewd move.

Oh brilliant.

takingmytimeonmyride · 08/08/2022 19:25

What about pigeon? My cat eats them. Not much left, apart from feathers, after he's got hold of one. Which is why I don't have a cat flap.
Nice pigeon ice cream.

EarringsandLipstick · 08/08/2022 19:25

I thought I had all the ingredients for shrew ice cream in the house already

Sentences I never thought I'd read on MN ...

bare · 08/08/2022 19:26

Please warn your family if you put it in the freezer <<visions of bird seed fat balls being eaten as a scotch egg >> Shock

EarringsandLipstick · 08/08/2022 19:27

And therefore might not appreciate a food they weren't keen on that was boiled, blended, frozen and served up as a summer treat?

😂😂
The comments are just brilliant!

👏👏👏👏 bravo!

WiddlinDiddlin · 08/08/2022 19:28

Shrews are purely for entertainment value and then as a decorative item, they're not edible.

Consider voles, mice, rats or if you want to get really exotic, glis-glis (edible dormouse, not be confused with our native Hazel Dormouse which are protected and must not be made into sorbets, icecreams or any other confection).

Riapia · 08/08/2022 19:29

If you had a rat you could make a three rodent roast.
Stuff the mouse in the rat and the shrew would tuck nicely inside the mouse.. nom nom.

Mice-cream. Like it.

Love it. I don’t care if OP is serious or not, I’m off to tell DD12 my new Mum-joke! She may dislocate her eyes, rolling them at it, though!!!

Also, ice cream makers can be a faff to clean OP. If you have a blender and a few ice cubes, it's literally seconds to whip up a fresh shrewthie. Keep it simple in the heat.
