Can I make ice cream from shrews?

The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us 4 shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker.

The shrews are already dead so I'm assuming IANBU.

I’m with Bill Oddie, David Attenborough, Chris Packham and the like, the shrews and the song birds are (all native species) cats are (non native species) murdering torturing feckers..

This has got to be a wind up.

iklboo · 10/08/2022 17:47

I am irritated that I came to it via twitter, where some snotty twat was suggesting MNers wouldn't be able to use words like 'albeit'.

I would reply thusly:

Not only can I use 'albeit', I can also use 'notwithstanding', 'wherewithal', 'happenstance', 'nevertheless', 'outwith' in context. Importantly, I can use...

FUCK OFF TWITTER TWAT. COME OVER HERE AND SAY THAT! WHAT WOULD YOUR MOTHER THINK!

😄

Roo4u · 10/08/2022 17:48

The suggestion that motherhood is incompatible with use of the word 'albeit' is easily dismissed as risible. In contrast, the concept of shrew ice cream merited considerable further discussion, quite understandably.

Also, neither cat ate my amazing frozen pilchard concoction (I tasted it and it was fine) but I have made made them happy by putting a small towel in the freezer and bringing it out for them to lie on.

To be fair, cats are hardly known for their gratitude. Do you think pilchards might be too cheap a fish for them to consider edible? Perhaps they prefer succulent juicy prawns, or smoked salmon?

Merryweather80 · 10/08/2022 20:39

My old dear Hugo (now long deceased) used to love ice cream, so much so that he was banned from being in the same room whilst it was being consumed. I may (or may not) have given him a little taste here and there on hot days ( in order to get away to eat mine in peace, from the dear departed mog). He would happily share my ice cream- or anyone else’s.

I’m sure the current four wouldn’t turn it down either. May sample flavours/ cat in the morning.

I must return to the cat stroking, I’m being given the evils by my fur-overlord. Tis a cats life.

Reduxrabbit · 10/08/2022 22:26

shrews not munched here either but any suggestions on frog sorbet, which is the current ingredient of choice?

I don’t think I could use my entire kitchen again after boiling shrew and mouse corpses in it. I’d have to move.

This…. I even wash up my cats bowls etc with a cat sponge. The idea of me and my cat sharing anything makes my brain fry a little 😅

wildchild554 · 11/08/2022 09:20

Shouldn't give cat's dairy as they are lactose intolerant unless it's cat milk, I didn't know myself till I had my first own cat, the one we had when I was younger used to occasionally have milk. :O

IcakethereforeIam · 11/08/2022 10:48

Make ice cream from milk suitable for cats. Liquidise frog, pour it over ice cream,

Affrogato.

Love it

Three words; label, label, label.

My 7 year old daughter throughly enjoyed the pilchard cake that I made for my dogs as treats and cut into handy snack sized squares. Apparently she thought they were for an upcoming picnic.

The thought of anyone having a shrew snacksident is beyond the pale.

All MNers know that after the great Fat Ball / Artisan Scotch Egg mix up of 2014.

Clicked on this thread again when I saw the above as I thought it was by way of marketing advice in the event that OP had decided to start producing Shrew Ice cream on a commercial scale.

Disappointed to see this is not the case.

I can see the marketing campaign now:

"Because shrew are worth it"

Several posts here complaining that cats are a non-native species which makes them, put politely, persona non grata. They have been here for years (hundreds of cat generations) so they are now established here to such an extent that there are "British" breeds of cat. How long does a species have to be here before these silly people stop this pointless narrative.

Also, British wildlife is under far more pressure from loss of habitat than cats (fake grass people, I'm looking at you).

Vegan carrots you say? I tried to share a recipe for shrew ice cream this summer and that didn't land well.

Tbh it wasn't vegan shrew ice cream, which might have been the problem.
