Can I make ice cream from shrews?

The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us 4 shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker.

The shrews are already dead so I'm assuming IANBU.

🤢

jaundicedoutlook · 08/08/2022 19:33

Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should

And I’m not sure I’d be wanting any of the next batch of vanilla that came out of that ice cream maker…

MotherOfPuffling · 08/08/2022 19:34

Do not ask me how I know, but trust me, cooking mouse corpses STINKS, and there is a fair chance the same goes for shrews. I would just chop, mince, and give raw albeit cold.

Antarcticant · 08/08/2022 19:35

Congratulation, OP - you've now made it onto the 'worst foods' thread!

Boxowine · 08/08/2022 19:35

Well, they brought the shrews for you because clearly you can't catch your own. I doubt that they are interested in eating anymore beyond the ones they already indulged in that you haven't seen.

When my cats bring us their household contributions, my DH feeds them to the crows. He's hoping they will repay him in bottle caps but all they do is poop on my car.

category12 · 08/08/2022 19:35

I'm pretty sure cats only kill shrews for shits & giggles, they never seem to eat them. I don't think they like their taste.

Mouse ice cream, maybe, but I don't think shrew icecream will be worth the (bizarre) effort.

MotherOfPuffling · 08/08/2022 19:35

I do freeze lick-e-licks for FatCat, and make tuna popsicles!

PolishingCandles · 08/08/2022 19:36

Am I the only one who has visions of the op coming home to find her DH ( if there is one ) sitting in the sun and tucking into a bowl of shrew ice cream, while commenting ' this is quite tasty, but could do with being a bit sweeter, where did you buy it?'

Tigertigertigertiger · 08/08/2022 19:39

No you can’t. There’s an enzyme in the shrew’s spleen that will stop the mixture from freezing .
a bit like The enzyme in pineapples stopping jelly setting

MistressoftheDarkSide · 08/08/2022 19:40

OP I think you’ve made my month with this thread - thank you 🙏

Love it ! Absolutely love it!!

(Fellow felinophile here obviously)

I think you might even have a solid side hustle here…..

Bootsandcat · 08/08/2022 19:40

Lol what??? I think if they’ve left it then they probably don’t want to eat it. Mine will just eat the guts and left the rest

Athenajm80 · 08/08/2022 19:41

I made tuna ice cubes for my tribe a couple of weeks ago. I bought tuna in spring water, mashed it up with some extra water, put it into ice cube trays and then into the freezer. They did eat them but weren't as enthusiastic about them as they are about Dreamies. Ungrateful bastards.

B1rd · 08/08/2022 19:42

We freeze Lick e lix sticks. That's probably a bit boring really in comparison. But it would save you boiling up dead stuff broth!

KarmaComma · 08/08/2022 19:43

I like the general idea. Eliminating food waste.

WarmSausageTea · 08/08/2022 19:43

Pop it in some chroux pastry for a tasty éclair.

willtheywontthey · 08/08/2022 19:46

With perhaps a twist of lemming?

showing my age

IDontDrinkTea · 08/08/2022 18:42

God, I thought penis beaker would be the most disgusting thing I’d ever read on mumsnet. Shrew ice cream 🤮

1000% agree! (And I hate anyone who says anything over 100% so this shows how disgusted I am)

Ilovecheesetoasties · 08/08/2022 19:47

Cats don’t actually like shrews. That’s why they never eat them.

jumpingwithjoy · 08/08/2022 19:49

God, what a faff, just shove a stick up the shrews arse and call it an (m)ice lolly! Job done ✅

Clymene · 08/08/2022 19:50

It's when you find the heads and have to go hunting for the body that I don't like.

My current feline overlord is too far and lazy to hunt. For which I am grateful.

BibiBlocksberg · 08/08/2022 19:52

What a genius cat lover thread :)

:) :) @ PolishingCandles - a variation on the ‘he has eaten a fatball thread’ perhaps?

Well worth looking up in classics for those not familiar :)

Shrewd move.

Haha

Greenkitten · 08/08/2022 19:54

At my local pet shop they sell ready frozen mice (possibly aimed at the snake keepers). Just get those, insert a stick and your cats have a delicious chilly treat.

Bjarnum · 08/08/2022 19:54

Only proteins denature - lactose is a sugar.

dawngreen · 08/08/2022 19:54

What you’ll need
A can of tuna (in brine or spring water)
A jug
Some water
Ice lolly moulds
How to make a cat ice lolly treat
Make up some ice lollies for your cat with some of their favourite flavours.
Open your can of tuna. You can also substitute this with low-salt chicken stock if you haven't got any.
Dilute the tuna brine or water in a jug with some cold water
Pour the contents into ice lolly moulds and freeze
Give them to your cat in a bowl or hold it for them. They'll love it!
