Can I make ice cream from shrews?

The cats need a treat on a day like this. My boy cat looks very hot and bothered. Girl cat has brought us 4 shrews already and I found a mouse corpse behind the bin, which smells relatively fresh.

Do you think the cats would like it if I froze them, perhaps mixed with a bit of cream? I know they can't taste sugar, so I was thinking of boiling cream and leaving the shrews to infuse at that stage, then making a sugar-free traditional custard (albeit shrew flavoured) and putting that in the ice cream maker.

The shrews are already dead so I'm assuming IANBU.

I read your post to my DP. This is what he said...

"Kill the cats. It would be easier, faster, cheaper and no cream or ice cream maker required. Also, kinder to the shrew and mouse population".

I'm not arguing.

@pigsDOfly I now have visions of the op ramming skewers up their arses and barbecuing them while the cats laze on sunloungers with micepops while they're cooking.

If you chop them up finely OP, they could have miceicles for breakfast too

ParrotsAteThemAll · 08/08/2022 20:33

Just freeze some Lick-e-licks like I do!

dudsville · 08/08/2022 20:33

I'm dieting. This thread has helped curb any desire to eat. Thank you.

Cats don't like cold stuff. They like warm prey... (apparently).

My cat enjoying a frozen lick e it. She does, my other cat doesn't.

Like micepops 😂

Love this comment 🤣

slashlover · 08/08/2022 20:43

Mine won't eat the frozen Lik-e-Liks but will happily eat them from the fridge.

IdiotCreatures · 08/08/2022 20:44

So I googled poisonous shrews and it is a thing, though not to humans and animals i.e if we get bitten by one, we won't die.
The reason they are venomous (pretty sure that's the actual term, I know there's a difference but can't remember actually what it is) is so that they can keep their prey in a state of stasis over the winter months in order to have a food store.
I am so glad I have obtained this knowledge!!

Frozen gre-mole-ata?

Would this be in a special pan ? Because I’m not sure I’d ever be able to use it again for human food 😳

I don't know; my DP cooks meat and peas in the same pot.

Actually that only works when said, not written....

SwishSwishBisch · 08/08/2022 20:57

This site is truly a gift sometimes 😂

BrettAndersonscheekbones · 08/08/2022 20:58

Use water drained from tuna , dilute and put in ice cube trays and freeze. Ensure you label clearly.

IcakethereforeIam · 08/08/2022 20:59

Af-frog-ato?

Laiste · 08/08/2022 18:56

Is that true?

Yes - shrews don’t taste nice to cats! They kill them but then will largely leave them.

Mice-pops on the other hand… yum.

Baystard · 08/08/2022 21:03

Are you mad OP? A good mumsnetter should be able at least 3 family meals from a shrew, not including 14 litres of stock for soup. A bit wasteful giving the cat a whole one Shock

Bergamotte · 08/08/2022 21:06

If this is serious, please don't make an appetising concoction out of the random dead mouse from behind the bins. What if it had eaten rodent poison that a neighbour put down, and staggered to your bins before the poison took effect? Not a good thing to feed your cats.

theclangersarecoming · 08/08/2022 21:06

We need to point the Op of the “moving to Shrewsbury” thread this way….

Agapornis · 08/08/2022 21:15

None of my over 7 cats (over the years) have liked shrews, so they bring them to me like a recycled gifts! Use the mouse, by all means, but I'd just pop it in the fridge.

This thread should have been titled: The Tasting of the Shrew

LammasEve · 08/08/2022 21:25

You could make mice cream, definitely but cats don't seem to like eating shrews so I think your efforts with shrews would be wasted.

Mice popsicles sound like a good idea too. Ours will start to get ideas now.

Soundofshuna · 08/08/2022 21:25

I open this ready to laugh at the typo…

Markedforsl · 08/08/2022 21:26

Cats don't eat shrews, so this idea is a non-starter.
Mice are more of an option. I recently had a mouse infestation and caught 27 mice alive. I suppose the Romans would have eaten them.
