On the back of the amusing threads about the irrationality of toddlers and their meltdowns, I have this for you.

Today my 17 DD is upset because I suggested booking an expensive (for me as a single parent) spa day for her and her sisters and me that we would go to on her 18th birthday. I hasten to add this is NOT in place of presents, cake and special attention for the birthday girl. Apparently I have made her feel worthless for suggesting she share her special day with her family. Confused

My 16 year old called me a bitch because I have refused to change our flights, back from long awaited holiday, so he can celebrate Halloween with his mates
I feel.your pain , why are they so horrid to us ?
Will it ever end

For homework, DS (13) needed to read a book and explain the themes. He decided the best approach was to get Mum to read the book and tell him the themes, which he'd then write down .

Apparently I wasn't being supportive enough when I suggested he should also read the book and actually do the work. Grin

This is a child who's doing well in English and doesn't really need help, he just wanted to play online instead.

My 16 year told me it was wierd to buy her a specially made birthday cake and also asked why we had made it chocolate and not consulted her first. She then saw the cake and came back and said ohh it has macarons on it.

She said to get pizza in her her birthday and I said fine shall I buy some for your friends. No she replied wrong age for that, there is an age that ia acceptable and this is not it.

SimpleHoardOfTruth · 18/10/2021 02:57

Because we bought new doormats. Final straw after redecorating the house. Bastards.

SofiaAmes · 18/10/2021 03:06

I have a friend whose teenager was upset because she NEVER yelled at him.

NiceGerbil · 18/10/2021 03:14

Teenagers eh!

Me and DH were little fuckers in different ways to that...

Go spa with friends!

(Tbh at that age many teenagers are extremely averse to being with family at all so... !)

She'll be lovely in a few years!

Lanique · 18/10/2021 03:18

My list is endless:

We had the temerity to suggest earlier that we all go to Antigua next Summer after their exams, but it might clash with 'other things' such as parties and drinking in fields with their mates

We 'threatened' to take them back to New Zealand for another Christmas next year, which was totally unacceptable as they like Christmas at home and could mean them missing out on Christmas parties. Bless them the poor lambs are still traumatised by the experience of being made to spend Christmas Day on a beach in Abel Tasman National Park a few years ago.

We took them to Dubai three years ago and dd2 still hasn't got over us 'making her' miss Halloween.

Other than that they're perfectly lovely girls that are, believe it or not, not spoiled at all other than in cases such as the above where the possibility of 'missing out' is too much to bear 🙄

Thanks you've all made me feel so much less alone dealing with an absurd teenager, honestly thought I was going bonkers tonight questioning my actions!

Oh they're going to have such a shock when they leave home.

I have 2 other now adult and mostly rational DDs so can only hope this one finds her way.

@Helpmyson I do hope it ends or I might be the one leaving home!!

DD is upset that I have covid because she might get it and miss her weekend away in 6 weeks time!

SpangoDweller · 18/10/2021 06:40

The holidays ones are ending me. Not a parent of a teenager yet, but I vividly remember the horror of being made to go on lovely holidays with my family when aged 13-16. Wishing the time away wanting to be at home. I do not know what I was thinking; teenagers’ brain chemistry is mad.

I now have a toddler and no spare money and haven’t been on holiday for three years. I would cry with gratitude if someone offered to take me to a Greek island for a week!

Positivelypatient · 18/10/2021 06:40

@BluebellsGreenbells just what you need when you're feeling like shite. Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Thank you for this thread. I thought it was just me. I dared to suggest booking a trip to celebrate my 50th. My 15 and 17 year old were livid because it is in December and they may miss out on a party. Lol at drinking in a field.

thiskiwicanfly · 18/10/2021 07:09

The utter abhorrence of my actions today - opening her bedroom curtains and window at 2pm... It's Monday, it's a school day (although lockdown virtual school) and it smelled like a pair of old shoes in there! What a cruel mother I am!

TerrifiedandWorried · 18/10/2021 07:12

I opened the window in in my sons' bedroom. "What have you DONE??? It smells weird!". That would be fresh air.

mizu · 18/10/2021 07:14

DD1 almost 17 looked at me across the table yesterday and told me she didn't like the way I ate ShockConfused

Kuachui · 18/10/2021 07:20

Why are teenagers so wierd though :S mine are toddlers and I'm already freaking out about it like why are they so confusingly.. Different

HighlandCowbag · 18/10/2021 07:26

Mine is raging because I won't let her take her very expensive prom dress which she said she absolutely needed for y11 leavers prom to school for her friend to wear in a production.

I should add the prom dress is unworn as prom was cancelled cos covid. And unaltered cos we only just managed to pick it up before lockdown #1. And is a long, slinky thing so will be filthy being dragged around backstage and as I said unworn.

Apparently I am destroying this other girls A Levels and dreams of uni. If she is anything like dd she will definitely get A* in dramatic effect.

blissfulllife · 18/10/2021 07:28

Mine saw a picture of me aged 15 in full goth mode. Half shaved head the rest dyed black and wearing ripped up Levi's a mesh top and bra. She's livid lol!. I stole her style! EH!!!! How could I walk around like that!? Why did I have piercings and she can't!? Lololol

Honestly she was appalled and jealous all rolled into one and is now barely speaking to me 😂

backinthebox · 18/10/2021 07:37

Thank goodness my teenager is apparently normal, going by the descriptions here!

Being forced to go on a family holiday? Tick.
Missing Halloween? Tick
Hating fresh air and light in her room? Tick.

Current one is she is outraged that I have to go to work at New Year. I have to work some bank holidays and New Year is less bad than working Christmas, but according to the teen, it’s just Not Good Enough. 😳

Also, I make her look after her horse sometimes. I am an awful parent!

That's awful @Helpmyson. I'd have gone apeshit if my child had called me anything like that. I hope you did.
backinthebox · 18/10/2021 07:43

@blissfulllife 🤣🤣🤣 yes, we’ve had style-stealing too! She thinks she’s being all edgy in her DMs and check shirts. Then DH tells her how much like me at the same age she is and she stomps off in her DMs in a huff!

Etonmessisyum · 18/10/2021 07:44

My 16yo son moaned becuase I bought him new bedding, made his bed for him coming home from his dads after October hols and he doesn’t like the checked pattern. It’s blue on the other side. God knows why he has to be rude and ungrateful about it.
