I’ve just learned that Casablanca is not in South America at all and is, in fact in Morocco! Who knew 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️
Anyone else got any tidbits they learned far too late in life?

That a killer whale ( orca) is in fact part of the dolphin family not whale...mind blown

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 22:25

@Sarahh2014 NO WAY!!! Not that I didn’t believe you but I had to google and it’s true! How has Attenborough not told us this?!?!

I was a teenager in the 1970s and was horrified at the thought of a Gorilla Army and Gorilla Soldiers!

I had no idea it was Guerilla army and Guerilla soldiers!

All I could picture was gorilla's trained to fire machine guns!

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 22:26

@Josiah when did you find out?

OP posts:
Josiah · 10/10/2017 22:31

Circa 1980/81 when I was 15ish!

Felt a right fool!

TheDodgyEnd · 10/10/2017 22:34

Could’ve been worse @Josiah 🤦🏼‍♀️

One of my old colleagues thought Seahorses were mythical creatures until fairly recently.
I tried telling her unicorns were also real. She had to think about it.

tinkerbellone · 10/10/2017 22:39

I always thought a high-viz jacket (high-visibility jacket) was pronounced hiveee's. As in a jacket named after the inventor mr/mrs hiveees. Blush

peanut2017 · 10/10/2017 22:48

X2boys yep I am Irish. I thought maybe it was an Irish thing but then my dh says 'roast beef' as well and so did all the other mams today!

At least me and your dad are not alone Smile

TellMeItsNotTrue · 10/10/2017 22:51

The Terracotta Turtles is my favourite false fact I've ever read on MN

I didn't think it could get any better, until you brought Bill and Ben in to it, for some reason that started the laughing off again in a big way Grin BBC encouraging cruelty to Terracotta Turtles Grin

  • double check it is a type of turtle and not tortoise, now that would have been an embarrassing mistake to make Wink
Battytwatty · 10/10/2017 22:52

I met someone from etitera the other day. He had to show me where it is on a map of the world as I'd never heard of it. I'd always thought I was ok at geography too.
I also thought pontrefact was in Wales too though

Blackcatonthesofa · 10/10/2017 22:52

This is going to become a new hashtag. You know, when people go alll oooh I've namechanged but an old member because #penis beaker #cancel the cheque #turtle powdered terracotta

AtSea1979 · 10/10/2017 22:55

This little piggy had "corned dog" in our family.
What my grandparents call corned beef. Corned dog hash, or corned dog sandwiches.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 10/10/2017 22:55

Thought Pennsylvania was a fictional place where vampires came from until DH set me straight.

What really blew my mind was when I looked it up (just to check he wasn't pulling my leg) and discovered that Transylvania is a real place! 😮

Think I was about 25.

AtSea1979 · 10/10/2017 23:03

Up north, I took Year 2 children out individually to do SPAG SATs paper. Past tenses. "Past tense of eat".
All but 1 child out of the 29 put "et"

TroysMammy · 10/10/2017 23:05

I've heard the little piggy having cheese on toast. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

papayasareyum · 10/10/2017 23:12

stopbeingadramallama · 10/10/2017 23:14

x2boys · 10/10/2017 23:14

And the piggy that goes to market isnt going for a weeks worth of roast beef/bread and butter there going to market to be slaughtered according to a thread on here onceSad

Pumperthepumper · 10/10/2017 23:23

Could the Pontefract thing maybe stem from Pontepandy?

quencher · 10/10/2017 23:34

@x2boys That makes a lot of sense when you think about the last little piggy.

recently on Mn I learnt for the first time why the chicken crossed the road. It blew my mind. I had not connected "to get to the other side" with death. Yet if it was in human context I would have understood it straight away.
I used to think it was the most pointless joke that i thought to McDonald and KFC was better because it made sense. Funny thing, it's the same context and not just crossing the road to the other side. Grin

x2boys · 10/10/2017 23:38

That's even more disturbing quencher poor chickenSad

x2boys · 10/10/2017 23:40

But makes sense Shock

WalkingInMyShoes · 10/10/2017 23:41

Pontefract is not in Wales?
Portsmouth is an island?
Bucharest and Budapest are not the same place?
A killer whale is a DOLPHIN?

I need a lie down.
(Terracotta isn't really turtle shells is it?)

ContraryFairy · 10/10/2017 23:44

Misled = mis-led as in not led very very, surely?
