I’ve just learned that Casablanca is not in South America at all and is, in fact in Morocco! Who knew 🙄🤦🏼‍♀️
Anyone else got any tidbits they learned far too late in life?

Peanut We say bread and jam too

Went on a trip recently to a historic building (trying not to out oneself!) - there was some pictures of unicorns, and my friend said, in a really sad voice 'oh, did they kill the unicorns then?' She said it so seriously and sadly we just looked at her with incredulity and laughed our heads off!!!

Lucked · 10/10/2017 23:48

I am Scottish and only found out this year that Scotland's national animal is the unicorn.

Portsmouth being an island always pops up on these threads (fine, it’s an interesting fact). What really pisses me off is the people who pop up and go ‘no it isn’t.’ Um, why do I always have to cross a bridge to get to it then?! Seriously what do you think an island is?! No it’s not miles off the coast but it is surrounded by water and therefore by definition IS an island. Portsea island. Parts of the city limit now extend beyond the bridges, but that doesn’t mean that the island ceases to exist. Much like Hayling Island down the road - not far off, you can walk over in low tide - Still an island!!

Spottyparrot99 · 10/10/2017 23:54

This one is unfinished

I could never understand why they were building a Channel Tunnel when in all the old fashioned murder mysteries I read people used to get on the boat train.

Which meant that clearly there was a rail track from Dover to Le Touquet or wherever.

And now I've touched off the memories of all those who thought the Channel Tunnel was like the tube you walk through in Sea World.

I thought Bruges was Belgian for Brussels 😂

BahHumbygge · 11/10/2017 00:00

I had my mind blown yesterday that France and Brazil share a land border.

scottishdiem · 11/10/2017 00:01

I am feeling smug that none of the real facts here are new to me. But then again I got to near 40 before learning that the little sharp cone on tube lids is there to pierce the metal covering on the tube (like on tomato paste, mustard or even medical salves). For years I had a special fork with a bent tine to pierce food tubes.

TheDodgyEnd · 11/10/2017 00:03

@BahHumbygge errr now I’m thoroughly perplexed - how on earth do France and Brazil share a border?

OP posts:
scottishdiem · 11/10/2017 00:03

French Guyana.

BahHumbygge · 11/10/2017 00:06

French Guiana... it's an overseas region of France, not its own country and it shares a frontier with Brazil Smile

Lweji · 11/10/2017 00:10

Terracotta - terrapin?

MrsA2015 · 11/10/2017 00:16

TErracotta wins the thread

CornflakeHomunculus · 11/10/2017 00:18

The terracotta trade is terrible. Look, they even hollow out the babies to make teeny planters Sad

Fray Bentos is actually a city in Uruguay and not just a meat pie in a metal tin!

Who'd have thought that?

The city is famous for it's processed meat though....

zoomiee · 11/10/2017 00:32

Terracotta tale cannot be bettered. Love it.

OkPedro · 11/10/2017 00:48

I don't get the France/brazil border?
They are no where near each other physically?
like NI is part of the uk but NI has a border with the ROI Confused

user1474 · 11/10/2017 01:01

Omg at terracotta turtles!

Last year I learnt that the pool will not turn green if you pee in it (learnt that on a "lies you tell your kids" thread on here).

Quencher the chicken crossing the road joke makes so much sense now!

westcoast · 11/10/2017 02:03

I didn't know Chile had a desert, The Atacama and flamingos live there. I thought flamingos lived in...I don't know...South Africa maybe? Turns out they do live there too and a bunch of other places.

I didn't know the potato originated in South America, the Andes to be exact. I thought they came from England.

oldlaundbooth · 11/10/2017 02:09

That Vegas weddings are actually legally binding.

As in Phoebe in Friends legally binding.

Lweji · 11/10/2017 03:11

Flamingos live where I live. Near Lisbon.

BeALert · 11/10/2017 03:44

My DH thought that Jack the Ripper and the Yorkshire Ripper were the same person...

As a young teen I couldn't work out why the Yorkshire Ripper targeted prostitutes but not Catholics...

user1474 · 11/10/2017 04:10

Oh also, I thought Ipswich was in Scotland until I met someone from Ipswich when I was about 23.
