Just been outside the feed the cat who has his food in the outhouse. There, hanging from the old pipework are 3 absolutely huge cocoons. They are hideous! Black and more than 4 inches long. They weren't there yesterday. What the hell is going to come out? AIBU to be very worried?

Your weapon of choice for any further investigation is a flame thrower, I'm sure they are available from all good DIY Stores in the 'How to fight alien fungi' aisle. Grin

That thing is the stuff of nightmares.

As someone who grew up watching lots of giant insect monster movies, I'm leaving the Midlands now. Give me a head start before you trigger the swarm.

Grandshiredoubles · 14/05/2015 05:35

I saw something narsty in the wood shed

Fabulassie · 14/05/2015 05:45

Yeah, baby, but did it see you?

flora717 · 14/05/2015 05:52

If it appeared since yesterday then it's not fully dry yet? It might get more shiny as it hardens (if it is a hawk moth).

MumRaah · 14/05/2015 06:09

ALso placemarking...

Cakeboastname · 14/05/2015 06:56

Is it some kind of dry or wet rot fungus? I don't think its tinder fungus or similar as I'm sure that needs dead wood. Looks cool. Defo phone the local rag and get your pictures inthe paper before it unleashes armageddon!

sebsmummy1 · 14/05/2015 07:03

Sod tweeting Chris Packham a photo, you need David Attenborough or maybe Bear Grylls for this one!!

EugenesAxe · 14/05/2015 07:07

I just want to say how much I appreciated hiddenhome's classic John Goodman quote when faced with a huge, sticky, pulsating blob of egg.

Haggisfish · 14/05/2015 07:08

I'm going with the poo fungus, too. ??

YouTheCat · 14/05/2015 07:08

Get Ray Mears in. He'll probably make it into a nice risotto for you. Grin

pudcat · 14/05/2015 07:13

Do not do anything to destroy them. They are the pupae of hawk moths. We only have 9 kinds of them in UK. They will not hurt you. You must not cut one open. They will hatch out in about 3 weeks. Do not kill them. We do not have enough moths and butterflies in UK. If you have children this is a good way for them to learn about the life cycle.

Chipshopninja · 14/05/2015 07:19

Any developments OP....and can we have more pictures of whatever the hell it is!

pudcat · 14/05/2015 07:24
