@ Fedupandpoor I totally agree with you

Leavesofautumn · 09/04/2020 23:12

Because it's all so Kafkaesque at first, with nobody being able to explain what they actually do, and when you find out the purpose of the tasks and what Appen are trying to achieve it's seriously terrifying. Think about what it means for humans and future employment prospects. How can people here not see that?

Catatemyhomework · 09/04/2020 23:21

@Leavesofautumn, from my limited experience of working in the gig economy, we are all moving to artificial intelligence if that's what you mean. It is what it is. We will always need people to control the artificial intelligence though. There will always be jobs, although maybe different from how we currently know them.

girlicorne · 09/04/2020 23:25

@Leavesofautunn if you aren’t comfortable with it there are other ways of earning money on line, I think cloud workers is mega grim and would honestly rather be homeless than do sexchat with dirty old men so I don’t touch it, others on here are fine with it and that’s totally cool. Signing an NDA and not being able to talk in detail about clients and specific jobs is very common it’s certainly not exclusive to Appen, plus the projects are very varied and so even if we were allowed to disclose details it would be difficult.
I think it’s just technological progress, machines have taken a lot of jobs from humans over the last decade and this will continue, we just need to go with it and grow/adapt our skills sets. I don’t mean to sound defensive but my daughter is at the best school in our county and how she has blossomed and developed since September astounds me, and if it wasn’t for Appen there’s no way we could afford for her to be there 😀 if it really is nt for you, explore the other options, I m sure you ll find something you will enjoy!

TheCanterburyWhales · 09/04/2020 23:27

Leaves- I transcribe in real life and have failed all the transcription sites entry tests, including the ones I know I did perfectly and well within the time given.

lilmishap · 09/04/2020 23:45

@Leavesofautumn

The biggest internet names NEED their site/service/function to be accurate and useful for humans which means humans have to check that it is. That's the basis of what these companies are doing, Appen isn't trying to take over the world and steal jobs they're just doing what their clients ask them to.
These checks on accuracy and usefullness are ongoing and as new trends, technologies, disasters, languages are a continuous shifting target they are likely to need human input for the foreseeable.

Disliking the direction the world is moving in won't stop it and these companies have been there all along, it isn't a brand new development it's just something you hadn't looked at before

PurpleDroplets · 10/04/2020 00:01

@girlicorne love the way you are having a dig at the cloudworkers on here.
Think your better then everyone else because you have Appen.

girlicorne · 10/04/2020 00:17

@PurpleDroplets not a dig at all sorry if you saw it that way, it’s just really really not for me personally, I have a history of sexual abuse and I just really couldn’t do it, I was sharing that as an example because the PP was uncomfortable with Appen, I m not comfortable with stuff like that at all but for anyone is then that’s totally cool it’s just not for everyone! I don’t think I m above anyone for having Appen, I m lucky as it’s great at the minute but there may be nothing on there next month, it’s never guaranteed!

lilmishap · 10/04/2020 00:18

faircrowd.work/ It appears there is a union thingy for us, worth a read

PurpleDroplets · 10/04/2020 00:22

@girlicorne I worked on cloudworkers before this thread even existed. It helped me get through uni when I was training to be a midwife. I am sorry I took your words to be a dig so I apologise for my tone.

girlicorne · 10/04/2020 00:26

@Purpledroplets it’s fine no worries, I apologise for coming across as having a dig I could probably have phrased it better, I was just using an example of something I would struggle to do like the PP concerned about Appen feels uncomfortable with that and that’s fine 😀 I could have put it better though! We are all just doing whatever we can to bring in those extra ££££!

PurpleDroplets · 10/04/2020 00:42

@girlicorneTotal respect to you anyway for making that sort of money on appen to cover school fees.
Working 12 hour shifts and dealing with the new rules in regards to Corona on shift is causing me to snap way to much.

girlicorne · 10/04/2020 00:46

@PurpleDroplets massive respect to you and everyone else working in the nhs especially with the added Covid19 pressures, please feel free to snap as much as you want!

If I have offended anyone else I am very sorry 😀

Tjsmumma · 10/04/2020 00:52

Sorry very new to this thread!

What are these apps/websites? How are you getting this extra cash if it is infact extra cash? Id love some more info if possible!

girlicorne · 10/04/2020 01:07

@Tjsmumma There are lots of links and info on the first page, that’s a great place to start, some of the stuff on there is pretty instant, some you have to apply for. Some of the things are harder at the minute like matched betting as there’s limited sport and mystery shopping as a lot of shops are closed but a lot of the survey sites are pretty instant and can be done as and when same as cashback sites and the oh my dosh offers. Then you have more long term jobs like Appen, Lionbridge, Crisp, Utest. I think a lot of it depends on what you d like to do and how much time you have, how much you d like to earn but there is plenty of money to be made online 😀 we all do different things and there are some resident experts on the different roles/companies! Everyone is lovely and happy to help you get started and answer any questions you might have!

Leavesofautumn · 10/04/2020 08:19

Right, but a couple of pages back, I asked: What exactly do Appen do? What are these tasks and what is the purpose of them? And was told it was all top secret and you weren't allowed to talk about it. Yet now with further reading of public websites, it seems their purpose is to help towards the development of AI by improving machine learning, by telling programs if they're working well or not, by analysing their search results etc. Why couldn't anyone here answer the question? I don't know if you realise it or not but most of thread is very confusing for newcomers, all in hushed tones and lots of words blanked out. Is it any wonder it sounds suspicious?

I also asked what I could put on my CV and again people were very cagey about it. Why are we not allowed to say "analysing search results to improve their accuracy" and things like that? I don't see why that can't be said.

Otterses · 10/04/2020 08:44

@Leavesofautumn

I think what puts a lot of people off discussing specific projects they work on with Appen/Crisp/LB etc. is the non disclosure agreements. Crisp management for example have repeatedly flagged up this thread specifically and reminds us not to discuss earnings/clients. The point is, these companies watch us. Once people starting posting their earnings it's not hard to work out who has breached their contract.

I really am not at all concerned about Appen and the 'secretiveness' of it, to me it's not any different at all to me not being able to share details about my day job. I think that actually applies to a lot of jobs these days! There are loads of other opportunities out there if you do find it uncomfortable though, I'd never want to push anyone into something they don't want to do.

I'm sure I saw someone link the guidance about what to pop on your CV off the Appen website, but personally I don't tend to put Appen on my CV as I'm never consistently doing anything for them these days. I only ever bother listing any of the WFH stuff if I'm applying for a position that's home based as I think it reflects well on my ability to work under my own steam. While they wouldn't give a reference, I'm sure that I've used invoices/payslips in the past to evidence employment.

Leavesofautumn · 10/04/2020 08:56

Having had a look at the Crisp website and the questionnaire to go on their waiting list, I don't feel comfortable with what they do either (again, it's all on their website for anyone to read, not secret).

So can anyone recommend some kind of task/project website that isn't controversial, where I could earn a few hundred pounds per month? I used to be a transcriptionist for Take Note a few years ago but their books are full now, and I can't find any more agencies with vacancies, apart from Way With Words who have rejected me.

I've signed up for some of the survey websites and that's useful of course but you can't make enough money from that alone.

justtheonethen · 10/04/2020 09:19

@Leavesofautumn rev are a transcription company.

TheCanterburyWhales · 10/04/2020 09:29

Yes, try Rev.
I failed theirs as well!

Otterses · 10/04/2020 09:36

That's fair enough @Leavesofautumn.

What about user testing with sites like utest/what users do/testing time? There's a lot of opportunities with them testing websites and finding bugs.

OP posts:
girlicorne · 10/04/2020 09:37

@Leavesofautumn what about Utest and similar? A few people on here make good money on those sites, I know @Lougle does and apologies I can’t think who else does but I know there are a few who would recommend.

girlicorne · 10/04/2020 09:38

Haha @Otterses cross post!

Leavesofautumn · 10/04/2020 09:46

Do Rev accept people using British English? I'm asking as they're in the USA.
