I think it might be a raise in HCG because I'm perimenopausal?

I know it won't be leading to anything, but I just wondered if I should see my GP?

I have had a few miscarriages in the past and I'd rather know what to expect I.e early miscarriage or nuts perimenopause symptoms Grin

I did both tests yesterday evening - they are the 6 days early type.

I could smell a weird smell on myself all day which made me think I should test.

I think I need HRT, I can't go through the next few months feeling pregnant.and smelling weird.

Yes it will be because you are peri

Really?
I have never heard of women getting false positives due to perimenopause. Surely that's a massive limitation of the efficacy of pregnancy tests.

Danikm151 · 09/10/2023 17:23

Waiting for an update!

Every woman of child bearing g years should keep a FRER at home and replace when out of date , preferably a double pack. They are the most reliable tests clearblue are rubbish.

Do you mean 'every woman of child bearing age who is having sex'?
I haven't had sex in years, I really don't need a pregnancy test.

Starseeking · 09/10/2023 17:26

Oh wow, fingers crossed for you OP.

321user123 · 09/10/2023 17:27

How did it go OP?

I want to congratulate you, but I don’t want to get your hopes up xx

yes and no, sex isn't always planned at any age.

In 2016 238 women over 50 had a live birth and 20 over 55years- but a significant amount of these will be IVF/donor eggs. But it does happen, it isn't just grandchildren.

I wish you well OP.

OhComeOnFFS · 09/10/2023 17:29

Wishing you all the very best, OP, whatever the outcome.

In the past it often was, before assisted conception and surrogacy. It did happen, it was just very rare.

🤍🤍

Sidge · 09/10/2023 17:38

It’s entirely possible you’re pregnant. If you are still having periods and have been having sex without contraception you could be pregnant.

It would be unusual to have an elevated HCG level high enough to show a positive pregnancy test result. It’s more likely in older post menopausal women, ie those who haven’t had a period for at least a year (but still rare).

VisaWoes · 09/10/2023 17:39

Hope things are ok?

nobodysdaughternow · 09/10/2023 17:41

Right, did a test before I went to the GP which showed another line. GP's test didn't show anything but I expected that because mine was a 6 days early one.

He suggested waiting another two weeks to see if my period comes, so I'll do that.

I will take some pre-natal vits just in case.

I may well be pregnant but I just can't imagine it won't end in an early miscarriage.

I am not getting my hopes up because I would love another baby. My middle son is currently going through a diagnosis of a terminal condition, so it is impossible to feel hope of any kind.

So very sorry to hear about your son.
I would work out how many week you think you are and then once you hit 6weeks, if no period pay for an early private viability scan. They’re usually under £100

Maireas · 09/10/2023 17:43

I'm very sorry to hear about your son, that's tough. 💐
I hope all goes well.

I've just looked it up and see that it isn't that rare at all.
Well I never.

True, but I think the chance of me having unplanned, unprotected sex and then choosing to wait and see if I was pregnant rather than take the MAP at the age of 53 is pretty small. I'll keep my money I think!

usernamealreadytaken · 09/10/2023 17:47

So sorry to hear about your son. Fingers crossed for something to put a little spark of hope out there for you x

I think this is what I'll do, hang on a couple more weeks till the six week mark.

I am slightly overheating all the sodding time, weeing more at night, getting hungry at 4am and can smell a weird smell that only happens when I'm pregnant.

I'm so sorry to hear about your son. I can't imagine how that feels, OP.

You are right not to get your hopes up. A natural pregnancy at 50 is very unlikely, and as you say, a good outcome rarer still. The oldest mother that I personally know of gave birth unexpectedly aged 49, quite a few years ago now. My friend had a scare aged 50 a while back, but it turned out to be the menopause. I wish you and your family all the best.

EekGoesTheBaby · 09/10/2023 17:58

Aw, that's a long wait, OP, but I think you're right about not getting your hopes up. Take care of yourself. Sending you a hug.

JustCheckingUp · 09/10/2023 17:59

Def didn’t know that about meno and tests!

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 09/10/2023 18:02

I am so sorry to hear about your son @nobodysdaughternow, I hope the diagnosis is wrong and you receive some hopeful news x
