As Nanou01 has declared me group leader here's a new thread to try and arrange our next meet-up

Oldies and newbies equally welcome :)Grin

I'm pretty free for the rest of May, bar some dentist appointments

June is very barren so any entry in my social calendar would be most welcome.

Meet without the kids any evening
Meet with the kids only weekends

When and where would whoever like to meet? Grin

OP posts:
suejonez · 26/05/2006 09:50

Yup - theres a real reason - shall I show off?

suejonez · 26/05/2006 09:58

Humphrey Davy isolated Aluminium in 1808 and called it alumium then in 1812 changed his mind and changed the name to aluminum (still following?) which the Americans dutifully followed. The brits however pointed out that it didn't follow the convention of naming elements -ium like sodium, calcium, potassium etc (which he also isolated) so British scientists changed the ending to ium and added the syllable.

And if you learnt about the Davy safety lamp in shcool, it was the same Humphrey Davy. (Brilliant man)

There now, don't you feel better for knowing?

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 10:08

so much better Grin
I bow my head in apology and admit that the American spelling was first (but still puts my hair on edge Grin )

suejonez · 26/05/2006 10:14

It's alright Mrs, no-one else has to know, it can be our secret. just don't tell any americans

Uwila · 26/05/2006 10:47

Great trivia. I didn't know that. And I'm a stickler for procedures and rules. So, I might have to start saying aluminium.... nah....

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 10:57

oh no our secret is out Grin

OP posts:
Uwila · 26/05/2006 11:17

yeah, that what happens when you type it on the internet. There are no private threads on this site!!!

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 11:31

I'm sure there are ;) I'm just not devious enough to find then, or was it that just don't care if people know what I think??? Grin

OP posts:
suejonez · 26/05/2006 13:05

Well the whole secret thread thing flew way over my head. I too am happy to voice my opinions in public. I'm on a couple of US adoption webgroups and I'm forever upsetting the Americans with my outspoken views.

Uwila - I apologise in advance.

Funny thing is, I don't have particularly outrageous views on most things but certainly in the adoption world, life is supposed to be nice and fluffy - dissent is not encouraged. If you disagree, it is chalked up as "only" your opinion... what wrong with it being "my opinion" - why does it have to be an "only"...

beginning to ramble now... something for you to look forward to when me meet - I ramble when I'm nervous too!

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 13:11

SJ ramble away LOL and what do you mean to say life isn't nice and fluffy?! Of course it is especially at 0200 in the morning when your little one wakes up teething/fever and chucks up all over you, the bed, the carpet etc. What's not hankidory with that? LOL

Oh and Uwila doesn't get offended easily and she debates properly Grin

OP posts:
suejonez · 26/05/2006 13:17

It's Ok I have ordered a non-waking baby so that won't happen to me. (I'm sure I ticked that box)

Uwila · 26/05/2006 13:39

Errrr... I thought Americans had a repution for being easily Offensive, not easily offendid. Just who are you hanging out with? I just might have to come over and rough them up a bit and tell them to act like proper Americans. Of course, as soon as I say the phrase "proper Americans" they'll send me back to England.

Uwila · 26/05/2006 13:40

Yes, yes, I do know how to spell offended.

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 13:52

Grin wouldn't call Americans offensive...met quite a few obnoxiously loud ones though Grin

some I've met are rather easily offended or rather driven into the defensive when criticised though, because everything the US does is good... yeah right

and then I've met some that were perfectly normal human beings GrinWink

And I'm sure some people have said all the above about me at some stage or another LOL

OP posts:
Uwila · 26/05/2006 13:58

MrsBigD, I've never heard anyone say you were a perfectly normal human being.

Americans are a bit defensive because:
1- They are proud (often misinterpreted as arrogant).
2- Because we are always being criticised in -- especially in Europe.

Oh, and some Americans are of course correctly interpreted as arrogant. But most of them are from New York... just kidding... sort of.

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 14:15

That's true Uwila... I'm not a perfectly human being heheheh I'm the mad German Fuehrer Grin

As far as NY'ers go... you're right ;) People in SanFransisco are much nicher and in Jacksonville (in every State) Grin though people from St. Antonio are a weird bunch GrinGrin

OP posts:
Uwila · 26/05/2006 14:40

I love San Antonio.... what does that tell ya?

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 14:50

Grin probably that you like walking along the river esplanade checking out all the lovely restaurants there

OP posts:
Uwila · 26/05/2006 15:01

It's the margaritas and nachos actually.

MrsBigD · 26/05/2006 15:11

Grin those places serve them too. I found it amazing the stark contrast of street level and river level

Wine Mousaka called back and confirmed for 15 June :)

So once again...
