Week 3 (or 2!) Jan '25 Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 13/01/2025 08:10

Morning all

So this is our second full week - some of you will be a few days ahead, so coming up to your week 3 (this is very confusing!)

I'm really impressed about the lack of wine so far Grin

We've had a couple of very quiet weeks so far, after some fairly hectic socialising at the end of last year. It does make it easier to stay on track, both food-wise as well as booze.

If you started on 2 or 3 January, when you get to the end of this week, i.e. 16 or 17, you can make a decision about moving on to Bootcamp Light if you wish - i.e. you can reintroduce fruit, nuts/seeds and chocolate. All in moderation, obviously!

And if you check out the spreadsheet you'll see that there are carb counts there for fruit and nuts/seeds, to help you make your choices.

Good luck Flowers

Dry January 2025 Bootcamp

Thanks for the new thread @BIWI .

2.5lb loss here, which I'm delighted with. I'm a healthy BMI, but with a petite frame the peri weight doesn't sit well on me. I'm expecting small losses from here, so will try not to let that get me down.

I think I might reintroduce berries at the end of this week, as I tolerate eating plain yogurt but don't really enjoy it, but will try to stay off nuts and chocolate a bit longer. We'll see how the willpower goes though!

Iheartmysmart · 13/01/2025 09:22

Thank you for the new thread @BIWI I’m 4.5lbs down from my starting weight so hopefully will make it 5lbs by the time I officially weigh in on Thursday.

Similar to @ReconstructionSite think I’ll introduce a few berries for my yogurt but will stay off the nuts and chocolate for now. Annoyingly I’m allergic to Brazil nuts but will give macadamias a go in time. Too soon for me to reintroduce chocolate, don’t feel I yet have sufficient control over my sweet tooth!

The things I’m most pleased about though are my NSVs. Hip pain has pretty much all gone, my energy levels are much better and for the first time in goodness knows how many years my skin is clear. Having been plagued with mild acne for 40+ years that’s a huge deal for me.

Almahart · 13/01/2025 09:49

I'm down 5.5ibs which I'm really pleased about and feeling far more energetic. I always forget how transformative this woe is for my energy levels

Stowickthevast · 13/01/2025 10:07

@BIWI is it too late to join?

I was meaning to start last week but some awful news meant I had to go and see people for various meals which got in the way.

A slight complication is that my eldest daughter has decided to go vegetarian and I've agreed to join her. I think I will allow myself some fish to help. I have read the bootcamp rules but I just wanted to check whether beans and pulses are allowed for veggies? Veg chilli is a staple here.

Thanks.

BusyFrizzyLizzie · 13/01/2025 10:11

A 2.6lbs loss for me at the end of my first week. I'm pretty pleased with that. Also very proud of my wine free status even though it's only been a week.

Last week's NSV was adding a run, in addition to my twice weekly lifting sessions. This week I intend to run twice and got off to a good start with a (very slow, painful) 5k after school drop off. I really, really hate running, but nothing matches it for convenience, so on I plod.

Today I shall have:

B: FFGY and cream
L: prawn cocktail and celery
D: mushroom stroganoff and braised cabbage.

Incidentally, while I was running this morning I listened to this podcast. . It's an interview with Dr Stacey Sims who, if her CV is anything to go by, seems to have some serious chops in the sports science world. I am a big fan of a fasted work out, mainly because I feel queasy if I eat beforehand but, in her view, it's far less beneficial - potentially actively harmful - for women's work out goals than for men's.

I raise it here because they discuss "keto", around 50 mins in. She's really not a fan. I'm interested to know whether what we're doing on BC is flexible, and high-carb enough to avoid being caught by her critique?

You're very welcome to join @Stowickthevast - but I'm afraid that beans aren't allowed on Bootcamp. There are, though, plenty of lovely vegetarian (and fish) recipes that might inspire you?

Morning! 1lb down (4 since Jan 1st) and it's finally started to get a little warmer..........still very icy where we are but so nice to not have to defrost the car 😊.
I have leftover omelette from yesterday for breakfast, green soup for lunch and lamb curry for dinner - DH will have naan bread with his.
I think that I will stick with strict BC for the duration, I don't really have fruit or nuts anyway. Happy Monday all!

Floralnomad · 13/01/2025 10:32

1.5 lb down for me which is great . BMI aid 25.1 from 29 something when I started in mid september .

Stowickthevast · 13/01/2025 10:35

Thanks @BIWI . I guess I'll be having an omelette while the others eat their chili.

I've got to get back into the low carb cauli cheese too which is a personal favourite.

TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged · 13/01/2025 10:35

Thanks @BIWI.
I'm heading in the right direction, which I'm glad about. I was up two nights with a sick child over the weekend and one thing and another ended up eating chicken and rice in my exhaustion on Sunday evening. I was SO hungry again today, so I'm concentrating on what must have happened with my insulin after that meal, and all the damage that does, to keep me on the straight and narrow.
DH made cauliflower rice last Friday following the instructions on this video:

I think the pieces were a bit small so I'm going to try again just pulsing once or twice. But it was a very tasty, satisfying fried rice meal so I'm glad we can do it even though we don't have a food processor. (I was going to share the recipe link but I can't find it - Australian Women's Weekly website but not coming up for me now). Next up I want to try a pilaf.

TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged · 13/01/2025 10:46

@BusyFrizzyLizzie thanks for that link.
Dr Sims seems to be equating keto with the Protien-Powder-And-MCFs diet that some fitness enthusiasts embrace.
I'm eating more veges on Bootcamp than ever in my life so if that's what's good for gut microbiome I'd say mine is healthier than ever.

prettybird · 13/01/2025 10:52

I'm going with yesterday's weight of 12st 3.75lb as I've had a wee blip upwards today. That's a lose of 1.5lb since last week Smile and only 1lb up from where I'd got to on Christmas Eve Xmas Smile

Still a long way to go before we go off to Australia in March. Shock

BusyFrizzyLizzie · 13/01/2025 10:54

@TheCourseOfTheRiverChanged that's what I'm hoping! However, she does make a point about the specific bacteria which derive from veg and carb-heavy diets are impeded and/or overwhelmed by those which emerge with a high fat diet. I think, as with all things, there's probably a happy medium. I remember from last time I BC'd that my levels of fat ingestion did start to balance out after a few weeks once my blood sugar was better regulated. Anyway, glad you found it interesting.

BIWI · 13/01/2025 10:54

@Stowickthevast (sorry to hear about your bad news, btw)

I don't know if you're using your mobile or a laptop to access MN, but I've just noticed that the link I included to the Low Carb recipe topic isn't showing on my phone feed, for some reason!

If you can't see the link, then head to the 'Big/Slim/Whatever Weight loss Club' and you'll be able to find the recipe topic.

Morning everyone.

Congratulations to those who've lost.

To answer @Magnolia82's question on the last thread, I'm a daily weigher and I take sunday's weight as my weight for the week because on that day I also measure various points on my body (so I know my loss last week came from my boobs!) and I record this on my own spreadsheet along with a quick diary on my thoughts and feelings for the week.

Floralnomad · 13/01/2025 11:09

@RockyRogue1001 most of the weight I’ve lost is off my bum !

venusandmars · 13/01/2025 12:37

@BusyFrizzyLizzie I haven't listened to the podcast (yet) so she might be refering to different types of excercise, but I recal from previous bootcamps that LCHF works well for long distance / endurance sports. Even the leanest athlete has enough body fat to keep them going (once they are fat adapted), and there is no amount of carb loading / pasta eating that can keep someone going through a marathon.

@Stowickthevast could you make the base chilli the same for you all (spices, tomatoes, onion, red/green peppers, celery) then at the end add beans for the rest of the family and cauliflower or diced swede, or celeriac to yours? I think it is hard if other people are enjoying all the flavours and heat of a warming chilli and you are sitting with an omelette. This woe eating is not supposed to feel like deprivation.

I've lost half a pound! I started late and then had some non-optional challenges. But I'm back on it and this week will be better.

KittenPause · 13/01/2025 12:53

Congratulations on all weight loss however small and just sticking at it

I made some extra bacon this morning, to add to my salad later on, with my fried eggs and just ended up eating the lot.

I'm looking forward to eating a bit of fruit, especially melon, It's the fruit I'm craving not alcohol, carbs or chocolate.

I love how DD has adjusted to cooking for herself when she does using the LC fridge ingredients by adding more protein to her WOE.

My tummy apron and bum are definitely shrinking and my face is looking more defined.

againmaeve · 13/01/2025 13:48

I've managed the spreadsheet this week @FinallyHere - thanks for your help last week. 4lb loss which I'm very pleased with as I am a post-menopausal shortie. I'm missing sourdough bread most I think and grains/pulses as I don't eat meat but doing okay so far. I will get hold of some Greek yogurt for this week.

ColouringPencils · 13/01/2025 14:13

Hello, just checking in.

Meals today:
Breakfast - Greek yoghurt
Lunch - Lettuce and tomato with tuna mayo and cheese.
Snacks - two slices of beef
Dinner - veg soup (carrot, shallots, celery, sprouts, ginger, garlic) with crispy leeks and lardons on top

Weighed myself today and I am 1lb down since Thurs and 6lb overall since 2 Jan. My 'official' weigh in is on Thurs, so I am hoping I will have lost another pound by then.

Iheartmysmart · 13/01/2025 14:33

I would be eternally grateful if my boobs would shrink considerably on this WOE. A 34HH at just 5ft tall is just ridiculous. And very annoying when you have to traipse to the nearest town that has a Bravissimo, only to spend a small fortune on a bra that looks like a medieval torture device.

B - yogurt with a bit of cream
L - bacon, eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes
D - chicken with cauliflower cheese, broccoli and cabbage

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/01/2025 14:43

No loss this week but lost a lot since stating so happy with no gain.

I made the cheeseburger pie so that's lunches this week! With the spinach that needs used up.

KittenPause · 13/01/2025 15:11

@Iheartmysmart I very much hope my boobs shrink too

I made a really lovely aubergine dish in the air fryer

Put whole aubergine in there for 15 mins on 180

Then cut in half and spread on a mix of miso, soy sauce, garlic, tomato purée and put in for 5 mins on 180

I also added some sesame oil

You can make up a sauce to put on top like a Mediterranean vibe if you want and cheese so it tastes like an aubergine parmigiana

Iheartmysmart · 13/01/2025 15:16

Fingers crossed for both of us then @KittenPause

KittenPause · 13/01/2025 15:28

I forgot I also added chilli oil
