Week 3 (or 2!) Jan '25 Low Carb Bootcamp

Morning all

So this is our second full week - some of you will be a few days ahead, so coming up to your week 3 (this is very confusing!)

I'm really impressed about the lack of wine so far Grin

We've had a couple of very quiet weeks so far, after some fairly hectic socialising at the end of last year. It does make it easier to stay on track, both food-wise as well as booze.

If you started on 2 or 3 January, when you get to the end of this week, i.e. 16 or 17, you can make a decision about moving on to Bootcamp Light if you wish - i.e. you can reintroduce fruit, nuts/seeds and chocolate. All in moderation, obviously!

And if you check out the spreadsheet you'll see that there are carb counts there for fruit and nuts/seeds, to help you make your choices.

Good luck Flowers

I've just had a bit of a fail. I'd had a kind of pork goulash for dinner and was still hungry, so had a portion of mascarpone with just a small sprinkle of cocoa nibs. But then I was still hungry and finished off the mascarpone while watching telly. Which meant that in total I had most of a pot
Hopefully not too many carbs (??) but certainly a shedload of calories. Just have to pick myself up and KOKO without letting failure become the pretext for more failure.

Earlier in the day I had rather a small lunch (small bit of leftover cheeseburger pie). And breakfast was only coffee with cream. So I probably should have kept myself more nourished throughout the day

In a NSV today, I certainly felt that my leggings were rather baggy. A bit of an ambivalent victory really, since they were better when they fitted and are rather new. But still some reassurance of becoming trimmer.

BIWI · 15/01/2025 22:08

Don't worry @AlbertCamusflage - you didn't fall face first into the biscuit tin, did you?!

Thanks BIWI. That's true. It didn't escalate. I can call that a win of sorts 😏

KittenPause · 15/01/2025 23:32

Normally I'd have a 3 egg omelette 🍳

BusyFrizzyLizzie · 16/01/2025 06:07

Morning all.

Had cheeseburger pie last night and it hit the spot! I find I am still peckish around 4-5pm and have been succumbing to snacks. Yesterday I had a few rollitos. I can't remember whether it settled down after a while? I think I'm probably fat-adapted by now?

Today the plan is:

B: FFGY w cream
L: tuna mayo salad
D: salmon in creams sauce with broccoli and roast peppers

ColouringPencils · 16/01/2025 07:17

Today is my weigh in day and I have put a pound on since last Thurs, but even more annoyingly, 2 pounds since this Monday. Wah! I feel like I have been following by the book, so hopefully it is a blip. Also annoying is that I have had quite a stressful week and there have been many times I would have reached for a wine or chocolate and have stopped myself. I suppose that is a success in itself, but just annoying I couldn't be rewarded on the scales! Could stress make you cling on to fat?? Seems plausible...

Iheartmysmart · 16/01/2025 08:02

Weighed in this morning and seem to have gained a pound since yesterday. But I weigh daily and it’ll probably be gone by tomorrow. Still 5lbs down from my starting weight so that’s great.

Good that you managed to stay away from temptation @ColouringPencils despite the stress. That’s definitely a NSV! Not sure about stress and fat relationship, hopefully someone far more knowledgeable than me can help.

So far I’ve only decided on breakfast today. Found some freeze dried strawberries in the cupboard so will be adding a few of those to my yogurt/cream combo.

StuntNun · 16/01/2025 08:33

Dry January was more of a challenge yesterday than usual; I had a stressful day at work and really fancied a glass of wine with dinner. I resisted temptation and had a DASH Mango water instead in a fancy glass with a big ice cube. I'm doing caffeine-free January as well for extra suffering! Confused

I had Simply Cook Vietnamese Pork for dinner yesterday. I started using Simply Cook to try and branch out with some new recipes. They can be very easy to adapt to low carb so long as you choose sensibly to avoid anything too sweet. The Vietnamese Pork recipe calls for rice but I swapped it out for cauliflower rice. I've had other recipes where you can swap celeriac or swede for potato or add extra vegetables or salad. The boxes only supply marinades, spice mixes and sauces so they're a lot more flexible than other meal kits. I really like them as they've given me a few ideas that I've then been able to make myself from scratch, for example lamb chops in Indian spices with a side salad and a bowl of Greek yogurt with mint. Easy, low carb and probably not something I would have come up with myself.

Almahart · 16/01/2025 09:20

Just checking in to report a huge whoosh! 3ibs down overnight.

I put on a lot of weight recently and that is coming off very easily.

It made me think about the notion of 'set points' ie your body sets itself at a certain point and will with hard to get back to that weight

prettybird · 16/01/2025 09:24

@BusyFrizzyLizzie - are you sure you're actually hungry or is that time a natural lull/slump and you're eating out of habit or boredom? I know that is was often the case with me Blush

Have a glass of water/mug of herb tea first and then see if you're still hungry.

What made me recognise that it was habit and mostly to break it was doing an extended fast ( well in to Boot Camp) and realising that when I was only drinking water, I didn't actually feel hungry until over 24 hours in Shock

In this society of plenty, many of us have forgotten what it truly feels like to be hungry.

NoCarbsForMe · 16/01/2025 09:26

Well I'm up 1lb today which us annoying as have been really sticking to low carbs.

Hopefully it will have dropped again by Monday 🤞🤞🤞

AlbertCamusflage · 16/01/2025 09:31

Congratulations, @Almahart!

Re Dry January, I'm finding it a little easier than I expected (except for an initial wobble in the first, still quasi-festive, days of the bootcamp).

I think it is because my alcohol klaxon is as much a carb-craving as it is an alcohol craving. In non-bootcamp times it sounds off around 5pm, after a day without proper breakfast or proper lunch. At exactly the same time my appetite for food sounds off. I start cooking, rather hurriedly, to prepare to satisfy a wolfish appetite and I too-much enjoy cooking with a can of beer on hand. Once I have eaten I don't feel any urge whatsoever to drink more alcohol

In the last couple of weeks I haven't had this wolfish 5pm appetite and haven't really felt the urge for a drink. I still have to be careful not to buy alcohol. If there was any in the house (apart from the weirdy or special alcohol that accumulates from Christmas presents, etc), I think I may still cave, despite the very much reduced 'alcohol noise'.

KittenPause · 16/01/2025 09:37

Is 200g FFGY a normal amount to have for breakfast or am I eating too much ?

Sadly, yes! The stress hormone cortisol.

Cortisol and Weight Gain: Is There a Connection?

Cortisol is one of many hormones produced in the body which serve as chemical messengers. This article details the potential effect of cortisol on weight gain, including some ways to reduce its levels in your body.

@Almahart Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book "Why We Eat (too Much)" talks specifically about the concept the weight set point.

@KittenPause I think 125g is usually given as a serving size, but I've looked up single pots, and they're usually around 175g, so I would say 200g is OK - assuming that the carb count of the brand you're buying is low?

@Iheartmysmart
@ColouringPencils

Sorry you've gained - but it would be a good idea to list out for me what you've been eating and drinking over the last couple of days, so we can see if there's anything obvious that you might tweak.

BIWI · 16/01/2025 10:29

@KittenPause Why are you buying a 0g fat one though?! You should be at least buying the 5% fat ones, ideally 10% fat.

Do My portions seem a bit big ? I'm not sure @BIWI

My omelette earlier had 6 eggs

And dinner was 2 cod pieces with cabbage and broccoli

Both were exactly what I needed at the time

6 egg omlette!! 😲😱😲That's huge!! 😂😂Mine is 2 eggs plus fillings, sometimes 3 if I'm hungry.

KittenPause · 16/01/2025 10:38

@MissBeckIsAtWork

I'm glad I amuse you

Iheartmysmart · 16/01/2025 10:38

Thanks @BIWI I think mine was just a daily fluctuation as I’ve lost 2.5lb overall this week, I’m just a pound up from yesterday’s weight if that makes sense.

Perhaps I need to stop with the daily weighing and go to once a week 🤔

MissBeckIsAtWork · 16/01/2025 10:47

KittenPause · 16/01/2025 10:38

@MissBeckIsAtWork

I'm glad I amuse you

@KittenPause It wasn't a dig at you. I apologise. You asked if the portion size was big. That was my answer in my head and I typed it. I have Asperger's. My replies are sometimes blunt. I apologise if I offended you. 🤗

KittenPause · 16/01/2025 10:49

@MissBeckIsAtWork you're forgiven especially as I'm pretty sure everyone is thinking the same as you Grin

That said clearly my portion sizes are an issue Blush
