Week 3 - July 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - full-on or Light?

Morning all!

Some good results already I see - which is great. Flowers

Here's the spreadsheet

A warning about week 3

We now have the choice. You can either stay on Bootcamp, or move to Bootcamp Light, which allows some fruit (mainly berries), some nuts/seeds (although check the carb counts, as they vary hugely) and alcohol in moderation.

However. Week 3 (and 4, and sometimes even 5) is notorious for seeing a change in the rate of loss. You may not see any loss, and you may even see a slight gain. If this happens to you, DON'T PANIC! It's totally, totally normal. As long as you're following the rules, and KOKO, things will resume. It's all about your body adjusting to this new regime.

So bearing this in mind, you may decide to stay on 'full-on' Bootcamp. Or, as some do, a hybrid, so Bootcamp during the week and then Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever your decision, I hope you have a good week.

This heat is ruining my appetite. I did make steak and creamed spinach last night but I struggled to the half way mark and then gave up and gave the rest of the steak to the dog and cats.

Today has been...

B - full fat greek yogurt and clotted cream with some ground vanilla. It feels very indulgent 😋

L - nope

D - still cooking...but we are having butter chicken curry (breast and thighs) with roasted cauliflower and broccoli

Water - I haven't kept track, but loads because I've been so thirsty

@Baystard

OMG that bread is delicious!

I messed it up by taking it out of the SC at 3 hours. It promptly sunk in the middle. I put it back in for another 2 hours. This is it.
I suspect it really is best in the oven but perfectly edible via SC.

Am sitting here eating an end slice with salty butter. It has a crispy crust and is deliciously moist inside. Will definitely make again.

The photo doesn't do it justice - this was delicious. I accidentally overcooked the broccoli and the bobbles went crispy but it reminded me of the seaweed you get from the Chinese and it went really well with the creamy aromatic curry. He even ate the thigh bits 😂

@cocomfortablyfrumpy can you show us a photo of the inside please? Did it taste 'bready'? It'd be nice to have something smothered in butter to dunk into soup in the winter!

That looks delicious!

If you like seaweed then cavalaro nero (nice bags sold in Lidl) or kale drizzled with oil and a sprinkling of salt in the oven for 15 mins is delicious

Baystard · 13/08/2022 20:46

Goodness @comfortablyfrumpy that looks good, your psyllium husk powder may be better than mine (not being purple Grin) do you mind me asking where you got it from?

I had a piece earlier, I'd overdone mine and next time I'm doing it in slow cooker I'll definitely skip the sunflower seeds - they're dangerously hard after being baked so long, oops!

Baystard · 13/08/2022 20:46

Ta da... tastes better than it looks.

I think it would be better if I hadn't moved it at 3 hours- it was all risen abd rounded at that point.

Will try again next week, but leave it there for 5 hours and see if better. Or just do it in the oven!

That looks tasty!

@CleanQueen123 I have 100g Greek yoghurt (about 2 very heaped spoonfuls) and 25g clotted cream (1 very heaped teaspoon). But honestly, if it fills you up until lunch, great. If you get hungry before lunch you could have had more (as long as it's hunger and not thirst). If you aren't hungry at lunch time, you could have had less.

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/08/2022 20:56

My only knowledge of psyllium

husk prior to this is that you feed it to horses who are grazing on sandy soil - helps clear the sand from the gut.

Am not going to dwell on what it might be doing to mine
Every day is a school day!

I bought some a few weeks back as every low carb bread recipe I had seen used it - but I hadn't been brave enough to try making one until today.

Baystard · 13/08/2022 20:56

Thanks @comfortablyfrumpy I've ordered some the same Smile Next time in the slow cooker I might try it in the style of tear and share rolls, perhaps they'll cook quicker and more evenly...🤔

Good idea!

Between us we might crack it 😀

I am going to slice mine and freeze most. It is quite moist inside and I think will toast well - so I can just grab a slice out and toast it.

I do like the crust, too! Nice contrast.

Welcome @sheepdreams

You have been added to the spreadsheet. Enjoy.

I've been doing LCHF (low carb high fat, ie Bootcamp) since January this year. It took me some time to become 'fat adapted' so that my body could use fat rather than carbs as fuel. For a couple of days all I could think of was eating sugar. My mind would jump from one type sugary, starchy 'treat' to another. After a couple of days on strict Bootcamp, eating lots of green veg and some protein and good fats, it all settled down and I could go for hours not even thinking about food.

I've worn a blood glucose monitor for a fortnight and, sure enough, my blood sugar was perfectly stable regardless of what I ate according to Bootcamp rules.

It's a way of eating that really suits me. Hope you find it works well for you, too.

Weight loss is for me just a welcome side effect. Getting off that low fat high carb rollercoaster, where I was either eating carbs or 'hangry' wanting more carbs was such a relief.

FinallyHere · 13/08/2022 21:37

my blood sugar was perfectly stable regardless of what I ate according to Bootcamp rules.

That's a tad confusing, sorry

So long as I stick to bootcamp rules, my blood sugar stays perfectly stable, with no big swings between high and low. I gather it's the swings that cause the cravings and urge to eat, always carbs, as if your very life depends upon it.

Lougle · 13/08/2022 22:13

@FinallyHere yes! I had such awful swings and would literally shake between meals, which meant that I grabbed something carby to fill the hole, only to feel just as bad later. Now, I can go all day and wouldn't feel bad.

sheepdreams · 13/08/2022 22:13

Thank you so much finallyhere appreciate your words of wisdom and the add to the spreadsheet.😀

ditavonteesed · 14/08/2022 06:17

@comfortablyfrumpy that does look good but it seems a lot of effort, I'm a big fan of seriously low carb bread for my eggs in a morning,
@SummerSazz sorry about the Rona.
I came home from work after 2 hours yesterday with the most horrific stomach pains, don't know if it's ibs I used to have it years ago but haven't for a long time, stomach swollen and rock solid. Anyway didn't manage to eat much And really didn't drink enough. Just slept most of the day. Actually a bit worried as it's happened a couple of times now.
Also haven't made it to the gym all since Wednesday, between periods and heat and stomach pains.

Hoping for anything at all off.
Some lovely looking food you guys are having.

StuntNun · 14/08/2022 07:21

I'm on holiday at the moment which might make it difficult to keep on track. Lunch yesterday was smoked salmon and salad although the salad dressing might have been a bit higher carb than ideal. Dinner was a bunless burger and side salad at McDonalds. But today we've been invited to someone's house for lunch and it's spaghetti bolognese so that's going to be tricky to avoid the pasta. I'm wondering whether to try and have a big breakfast and then just eat the bare minimum at lunch time.

BIWI · 14/08/2022 08:24

Depends how well you know them @StuntNun, but you could always try saying that you're gluten-free, so could you just have the meat/sauce? (Assuming you can't just tell them that you don't eat carbs!!)

Always a tricky one to negotiate

@PennyPinkPineapple I love it when the broccoli bits go crispy like that! I roast mine in the oven with shallots and lots of olive oil and sea salt. Sometimes chilli flakes too.

I hope you are feeling better, sounds horrible :(

Honestly the bread is easy make - much easier than regular bread. About 5 mins prep!
I need to crack the slow cooker timing though- I think I will just do regular oven next time.

Same! I used to be perpetually hungry, and assumed I needed more carbs to fill the gap.
