Week 3 - July 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - full-on or Light?

BIWI · 08/08/2022 08:48

Morning all!

Some good results already I see - which is great. Flowers

Here's the spreadsheet

A warning about week 3

We now have the choice. You can either stay on Bootcamp, or move to Bootcamp Light, which allows some fruit (mainly berries), some nuts/seeds (although check the carb counts, as they vary hugely) and alcohol in moderation.

However. Week 3 (and 4, and sometimes even 5) is notorious for seeing a change in the rate of loss. You may not see any loss, and you may even see a slight gain. If this happens to you, DON'T PANIC! It's totally, totally normal. As long as you're following the rules, and KOKO, things will resume. It's all about your body adjusting to this new regime.

So bearing this in mind, you may decide to stay on 'full-on' Bootcamp. Or, as some do, a hybrid, so Bootcamp during the week and then Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever your decision, I hope you have a good week.

Ribeye is what we usually have but since they started selling these thick cut (over 2cm) 36 day aged fillet steaks, I'll get them for the occasional treat. They are soooooo tender and tasty Smile

This is the recipe I've used for the thick cut steaks (in a cast iron frying pan rather than my usual griddle for the ribeyes) - although for less time than he suggests (having read the comments)

https://www.seriouseats.com/butter-basted-pan-seared-steaks-recipe

A friend of the family used to be a wholesale butcher: apparently he says that the codes on the beef (this was before the new grass fed cuts) were the same origin as M&S steaks!

prettybird · 08/08/2022 13:10

Meant to say - I'm going to stay more strictly on Boot Camp than I usually do. No whole nuts allowed, as I always end up snacking mindlessly on them Blush

I will however use ground almonds/almond flour to make things like muffins and Tom Kerridge's bread and flatbreads.

Ds' girlfriend, who is veggie, is coming down tomorrow night for a couple of nights. I'll need to have a ponder about what to serve up.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 08/08/2022 13:27

Checking in, been away and kept it as low carb as possible, I'm really proud of myself. I had stayed the same when I weighed in before I left but hoping for a loss when I weigh on Thurs (am slightly ahead of you all)

FrenchBoule · 08/08/2022 14:23

Hello 🙂 hope everybody’s doing well.
So sorry for disappearing.life took over again 😳
Low carbing in full swing, hopefully will manage to shift some flab from upper arms and midriff.

Stomach bug is good to make sure that you don’t eat things yiu were not supposed to (or not eat at all).

Currently feasting on eggs, spinach and paneer with curry sauce(left over from last night).

Last week of summer holidays here (Scotland) and I’m more than ready to hand my cherubs in (or give them away to travelling circus).

Water with crushed mint is awesome, frequent trips to the toilet upstairs are not (pelvic floor a bit weak)

Keep on losing 💪

Off to deal with washing and organise school shoes 🤯

I came across a lovely-sounding recipe in a Sainsbury's magazine today (The Modern Vegetarian, which is a stand-alone magazine produced by them), for

Turkish-style Eggs
serves 2

INGREDIENTS

1 small garlic clove, crushed (or a pinch of garlic granules)
200g thick Greek yoghurt
1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 tablespoon salted butter
1/2 tablespoon olive oil
pinch of chilli flakes
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1-2 tablespoons chopped dill

4 medium eggs
1 teaspoon white wine vinegar

METHOD

  • whisk together the garlic, yoghurt, extra virgin olive oil and some seasoning in a heatproof bowl, and set this over a pan of barely simmering water, to bring it to room temperature
  • put the butter, 1/2 tablespoon olive oil, chilli flakes and paprika into a small pan, on a low heat, and stir together for 1-2 minutes till you get a sizzling, orange-hued butter. Remove from the heat and stir through the chopped dill
  • poach the eggs by bringing a large, shallow pan of salted water to a gentle boil. Add the vinegar. Carefully break one egg into a ramekin or cup and gently slide the egg into the water. Repeat with the remaining eggs. Lower the heat until the water is barely moving, allowing the eggs to cook gently for 3-4 minutes or until the whites are set. Remove the eggs with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper
  • spoon most of the yoghurt into two bowls and top each with two poached eggs. Spoon over the remaining yoghurt, pour over the spiced butter and serve immediately

Hi everyone, I'm very slightly up this week but I am bouncing between 68 and 69kg which is where I want to stay so I'm just KOKO! We go away in just under 3 weeks😎

Those turkish eggs sound amazing! I've saved the recipe on my phone for one evening this week.

CleanQueen123 · 08/08/2022 15:08

I'm sticking to normal bootcamp, although mostly because I'm not a huge fan of fruit or nuts.

I'm hoping I can shift 2lbs this week and then I'll have hit the half stone mark.

Bunce1 · 08/08/2022 15:49

Love Turkish eggs- really appreciate the recipe @BIWI

we are on our way!
l- tuna avo and cucumber salad with seeds
d- we have a mezzo style picnic packed for the ferry

venusandmars · 08/08/2022 16:05

Have a great holiday @Bunce1 I find the thought of French bread (and sometimes the smell) is more enticing than the reality. Just take your time - if you leave it out for 2 hours it will be dry and hard and not at all enjoyable Grin

Creamy coffee for breakfast
L - cold meat and salads (with oo and mayo)
D - left over cauliflower cheese (with left-over cabbage and green beans mixed in)

So good to read of everyone's losses. Please do not be disappointed with a loss of 1 or 1.5 lbs. Reflect on the last 2 weeks and think about how different they have been to a 'low fat / low cal' approach. On bootcamp - did you enjoy amazing, delicious food? YES Did you suffer from gnawing hunger pangs? NO Did you have moments on this wonderful supportive community where you either laughed out loud, or felt great compassion? I am certain you did.

And you will have most like lost more / as much weight as you might have on an alternative probably unsustainable 'diet' regime.

KOKO and thank our lucky stars for @BIWI

I occasionally post this picture - just to demonstrate what 'only' 1lb of fat looks like!

Thank you

bandbsmummy · 08/08/2022 17:04

Thanks @Lougle, I'll give that a try instead.

There's a not very processed one on offer at Tesco 😊

FancyFelix · 08/08/2022 17:30

That Turkish egg recipe sounds lovely, definitely going to try that one. I just had this for lunch and it was delicious.

Smashed cucumber and halloumi salad

Ingredients:

	2 cucumbers
	2 tbsp olive oil
250g halloumi, chopped into small slices
	2 tbsp tahini
	1 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp chilli oil, plus extra to serve
1 bunch spring onions, roughly chopped

Method:

Step 1
Gently bash the cucumbers with a rolling pin until they break up into large pieces. Chop these up into bite-sized pieces.
Step 2
Pan fry the halloumi slices with a glug of olive oil for 2 mins on either side until golden brown and crispy.
Step 3
In a large bowl, add in tahini and 3 tbsp of boiling water. Whisk well until smooth then add in the soy sauce and crispy chilli oil.
Step 4
Add the cucumbers, halloumi and spring onions to the dressing. Toss well and serve up in bowls with more chilli oil.

I posted on the old thread 😐...

1lb down this week. Not bad considering I was on hols camping last week.

I have now lost roughly 48 packs of butter (24lbs) since Easter and feeling a whole lot better. A way to go but each week clothes get looser.

loopylu26 · 08/08/2022 18:22

2lb loss for me this week, I was a little disappointed after losing just over 7lbs last week but then I saw @BIWI's picture of a 1lb of fat. That brought me back down to earth, and realised that if I was still calorie counting I'd have been delighted with a loss of 2lbs. At least this WOE I've lost weight and not been hungry. Win win!

Stomach has now settled finally and blood pressure was down a little this morning as well

Chocasaurus · 08/08/2022 20:04

Great losses everyone. Down 2.2lb for me which I'm overjoyed with as I wasn't expecting anything after last week.

I'm out for dinner 2 nights this week which is going to make things a bit more challenging. The first place is an Italian and looking at the menu will either have chicken ceasar salad or chargrilled chicken and aubergine. Perhaps with burrata for starter. Will allow myself one glass of dry white. 2nd night is at a lovely Indian near us for our wedding anniversary - need to check out the menu and plan ahead to remove the temptation to go carb crazy!

Going to stick to strict BC rules the rest of the week. Food today was b = greek yoghurt and a sneaky few berries, l = salad leaves, mayo and crustess quiche (ham and broccoli), d = stir fry with sesame oil and an extra side of greens for me instead of noodles. Water = 3 litres and about to get another glass.

@BIWI thanks for the Turkish eggs recipe, looks delicious 😋

KOKO everyone 🙂

@Chocasaurus Indian is so dead easy to go low carb. Don't fall off the tracks - it WILL be worth it!

BIWI · 08/08/2022 22:54

@Chocasaurus why not post the menus here and we can help you make your choices?

Lougle · 08/08/2022 23:08

I've KOKO today. DD2 has a birthday tea on Friday so I'm taking some low carb options to Mum and Dad's to go with the carby menu that DD2 has requested.

B - Greek yoghurt & clotted cream
L - bacon, cheese and mushroom omelette
D - meatballs and fried courgette ribbons.

Fluids: 4 litres (1 cup of tea)

9500 steps today, also.

Chocasaurus · 09/08/2022 06:29

@SummerSazz that's good to know, thanks.

@BIWI thank you for the kind offer, here they hopefully are....should be obvious which is the Indian and which is the Italian 😆I was hoping there would be some fish on the menu at the Italian but seems not 😋

Whicker · 09/08/2022 06:46

A slightly rubbish weekend with family parties and whatnot, reminding me that I really can’t have just one bite of a carby thing without ending up face first in the cake.

This is where “not weighing” really comes into its own for me, though. Normally I’d now be tormenting myself over the scales and either starving myself or punishing myself with overeating. But instead I am calmly back onto bootcamp. Have got a few more parties in the next few weeks. I need a better strategy for them.

ditavonteesed · 09/08/2022 06:53

I've posted my lightest from last week as the scales have been a bit all over the place. Depending on day I've either seen a 0.8 loss, sts or a pound gain.

I'm a combination of stressed, exhausted and insanely busy. And I have to confess yesterday I had some chocolate at work that a patient gave me, I was so hungry and tired that once I started I couldn't stop. Really mad with myself this morning.

Rshard · 09/08/2022 07:35

Didn’t manage to post yesterday, but so great to see how well everyone doing. Not only the losses but then navigating of life while sticking to this woe.

I stayed the same, which is fine. I’ll be sticking to strict boot camp during the week and lite at the weekend.

Baystard · 09/08/2022 07:46

Ooh tasty menus @Chocasaurus

I like a caesar salad but I do find them very unsatisfying - take out the lettuce and there's not much there, and quite low fat (even if you do have plenty parmesan). Could you ask for one of the lush sounding pasta dishes but ask them to either substitute some veg for pasta and serve in similar way, or just omit the pasta and add side salad?

Chocasaurus · 09/08/2022 08:37

Oooh @Baystard I hadn't thought of that. The lamb ragu pasta with a side salad instead sounds heavenly! 👌
