Week 3 - July 22 Low Carb Bootcamp - full-on or Light?

BIWI · 08/08/2022 08:48

Morning all!

Some good results already I see - which is great. Flowers

Here's the spreadsheet

A warning about week 3

We now have the choice. You can either stay on Bootcamp, or move to Bootcamp Light, which allows some fruit (mainly berries), some nuts/seeds (although check the carb counts, as they vary hugely) and alcohol in moderation.

However. Week 3 (and 4, and sometimes even 5) is notorious for seeing a change in the rate of loss. You may not see any loss, and you may even see a slight gain. If this happens to you, DON'T PANIC! It's totally, totally normal. As long as you're following the rules, and KOKO, things will resume. It's all about your body adjusting to this new regime.

So bearing this in mind, you may decide to stay on 'full-on' Bootcamp. Or, as some do, a hybrid, so Bootcamp during the week and then Bootcamp Light at the weekend.

Whatever your decision, I hope you have a good week.

Well, I'm finally feeling well enough to have an appetite (feel quite lucky if 2 days of rough covid is all I suffer 🤞). So breakfast is a full fry up as that's what I fancied and haven't really eaten for 2 days. Scales thankfully realised the 6lb weight gain they reported yesterday was a blip <phew>

@sheepdreams similar to lougle I've lost 30lb since starting (albeit in jan). I do stay on BC light and usually intermittent fasting between BC as otherwise the weight creeps on as peri menopausal and love crisps and beer too much.

Hopefully the pic gives you confidence to embrace the fat! I usually have yoghurt and extra thick double cream at some point in a day!

@Baystard please report back on the slow cooker bread. I buy the low carb bread online but it means ordering well in advance and being organised which I am not!

Baystard · 13/08/2022 13:08

@Pleaseandthankyou I'm cautiously calling it a success. It's quite flat (only about 1.5" because obviously the slow cooker is bigger than a loaf tin, and the crust is thicker because it took a while for the middle to cook. However for my purposes (a tasty thing I can toast from freezer and slather in butter when I'm at risk of having wheat bread) it's fine and much cheaper in electricity than in the oven. I gave it about 4 hours on high, probably an hour too long but I got distracted and forgot about it!

I think that if I'm doing a casserole batch cook in the oven I'll still do a couple in the loaf shape as I think it cooks more evenly and less dry at the edge but I'm not unhappy with this version.

I am wondering if it is possible to use a loaf tin (silicone?) In the slow cooker.

I am trying not to use my oven too much now (just got an air fryer) so if the SC works for LC bread, that's fantastic!

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/08/2022 13:32

Oooh, I have done some googling and yes you can use a loaf tin in a slow cooker - metal or silicone.
I am pretty sure one of mine will fit so going to go for it :)
Will report back!
@Baystard, Thank you. I bake regular bread for my family each week and the smell is soooo tempting. I will bake for myself at the same time :)

SummerSazz · 13/08/2022 14:00

I'm going to try and find a breadmaker recipe although the tin is quite large so may well end up flat too!

@Baystard where do you get the psyllium husk powder from?

sheepdreams · 13/08/2022 15:09

Hi all

I hope your all having a fab Saturday. Thank you so much for the warm welcome, inspiration and reassurance. I am preparing to start. 😀

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/08/2022 15:20

Right, @Baystard's low carb loaf is in the slow cooker. Will report back! Going to give it 3 hours on high. My loaf tin just fitted. Possibly I could havd used a smaller one but I am not sure how much this rises so have played safe.

SummerSazz · 13/08/2022 15:41

For anyone who wants a bit of 'crunch', cheesies are my go to. Basically baked cheese and are nice instead of crisps etc. 20% off link below (they are a bit pricey)

@Lougle 26lbs since May is amazing. I really like hearing everyone's losses it gives me so much hope.

Baystard · 13/08/2022 16:56

Ooh @comfortablyfrumpy I didn't think of putting the tin into the slow cooker. That would probably reduce the external crunchiness a bit. Can't wait to hear how you get on!

@SummerSazz Holland & Barratt or Whole Foods both stock it. Important to get the powder as they also carry a coarse version which I'm told doesn't work. Both go a bit purple in colour when cooked but it doesn't affect the taste.

Thanks @Baystard - will have to go to an actual shop!

bella1426 · 13/08/2022 17:05

Cant face cooking in this heat. Just had yogurt for dinner 🙈

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/08/2022 17:18

@SummerSazz I got mine from Amazon (I know, but... ).

Well, it has risen far more than I expected! Going to check again in an hour....

Baystard · 13/08/2022 17:28

@SummerSazz I buy it online normally and have it delivered.

@comfortablyfrumpy that's a lovely colour and very bread like - looks promising! Mine seems awfully dense by comparison.

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/08/2022 17:30

@Baystard my calculation is that a whole loaf comes to 24.5g carbs. Does that sound about right? So about 2 5g per slice (and not a bad size slice!).
I am going to slice and freeze most of it, assuming I don't mess it up!

mohsin73 · 13/08/2022 17:31

If you are just starting out on a low carb diet, the full-on bootcamp may be a bit too intense. You might want to try the light version first to get a feel for what you can and cannot eat on a low carb diet. Once you have a better understanding of the diet, you can then move on to the full-on BootCamp.

comfortablyfrumpy · 13/08/2022 17:33

I cannot believe that I sm so ridiculously excited about a loaf of bread.😄
But then I haven't had any bread in 3 months....

I winder if 3 hours is about right? So another 45 minutes. I will check it then and I will not be waiting with a bread knife and a pack of butter

It's supposed to be intense - that's why it's called 'Bootcamp'!

The rules are very straightforward, so there really isn't any need for trying the light version first.

Hmmmm Hmm Not sure @BIWI would agree Wink

The reason for the strict first 2 weeks is to break the hold that carbs have over us and to break bad habits - and (just as, if not more, importantly) to show that we can eat well and be satisfied on this WoE.

It's also designed to be easy because there is no calorie or carb counting. Smile You just need to follow the Rules as outlined in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness (and the OP of the first week).

It is only 2 weeks and after that you can introduce berries, nuts, dark chocolate and low carb alcohol in moderation Grin

Grin

I was thinking 'ouch'

And yes, full bootcamp is a reset. Light there are too many ways to stray with just letting a chink in

CleanQueen123 · 13/08/2022 18:10

I have a question if I may? The greek yogurt and clotted cream, how much of each are we meant to be having? I know we don't count calories and fat is good but I worry my love of cream is making me eat more than I really ought to be.

prettybird · 13/08/2022 18:53

@CleanQueen123 - as much as satiates you Wink

I tend to have 2 generous dessert spoonfuls plus a slosh of double cream (or a heaped teaspoon of clotted cream. I think that equates to about a quarter of a big tub of Lidl Authentic Greek yoghurt. @BIWI talks of having about a third of a tub Grin

Praise be for that! Although I might need to cut down slightly on the amount of clotted cream 🤭
