Week 4 - Jan 22 Low Carb Bootcamp

Evening/all morning all

As ever here's the link to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

Please be aware that this week, like week 3, is likely to see little or no weight loss.

Just KOKO! If it's worked for you in the first two weeks, then it will keep on working for you from here on in.

It's about transitioning from carb burning to fat burning.

Flowers and good luck to us all from next week!

Checking in. Not hopeful of a loss this week but KOKO into my Week 5.

Water water water Grin

APerfectlyGoodName · 06/02/2022 23:42

Not hopeful either...

quince2figs · 07/02/2022 03:34

Still recovering - scales-wise - from my falling off wagon in week 2…
KOKO but not drinking enough water; trying more herbal teas, and usual builder’s tea with a drop of milk.

I tried some Innocent almond milk which was almost carb free; unfortunately not keen. Just about drinkable in a coffee if I used some sweetener or drop of vanilla extract. I’ll use it all up in baking for the dcs.
Maybe in a cheese sauce with some cream?

I tried the SLC bread, which I found delicious, and will limit to once/twice a week.

Today:
B crispy bacon and fried egg on a SLC buttered roll. Heavenly!
L green salad with lots of avocado and gingery/coriander dressing
S few pieces of stinky Brie, few raspberries
D grilled lamb steak including fat. Small serving of roasted red pepper halves, stuffed with garlic, tinned anchovy fillets and oil, smidge of pesto and two cherry tomatoes per pepper half. I did a huge tray of these to use up over next few days. Lovely cold with lots of fresh basil leaves and Parmesan.
I’m guessing not the lowest carb option as not green veg… but so intense that only a small portion needed.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 07/02/2022 04:55

One pound on. Had pizza and a doughnut at a party on Friday night, but otherwise I have been fairly conscientious.

I’m currently menopausal and so far, I’ve not reached a point where I feel I’m recognizing hunger/fullness. I’m not sure whether it’s down to having had carbs one night.

I lost quite significantly in the first week, but nothing since. I know weeks three and four are notorious for plateauing, but I was surprised to have done so in week two.

I’m going to carry on, but am worried this WOE might not work for me. If anyone has any gentle encouragement, I’d appreciate it.

StuntNun · 07/02/2022 06:09

Give it time @TheCurrywurstPrion especially if you're menopausal as it can make weight loss a little slower initially. This way of eating does work and it will work for you.

Menopause is brutal 🤦‍♀️ I'm 18 months in, and still in a fog 😨

Still going here and enjoying the food and not being hungry. Weight loss is slow and steady for me but that's fine as I am happy to lose weight slowly whilst eating lovely food and never feeling hungry. I don't have much to lose now so if I lose two pounds a month I'll be happy as I have tons of energy and feel better than I have in ages.

SweetPotatoDumpling · 07/02/2022 06:48

3lb off this week...which fits the pattern and might help those on weeks 3/4 who are stalling!

I've just finished my 'week 5' and on weeks 3 and 4 lost only 1 lb each week! I knew this was the way of things though so really didn't worry at all...kept to the plan and trusted that week 5 would see a change.

Stepped on the scales this morning...3 lbs off 🙌🏼

Mushroom and spinach omelette for breakfast today, with a creamy coffee.

Chicken drumsticks, green been salad and homemade coleslaw for lunch.

Homemade creamy celery soup for tea with a huge bowl of salad and oily dressing.

LizzyBennett · 07/02/2022 06:50

Good morning all

Haven't been here much because I've been really busy in TO but still KOKO. I don't have a scales at home so will weigh in later in work, but I've been sticking to boot camp rules this week so it should be ok.

Today's meals will be
B - black coffee and water (16:8)
L - Tuna mayo and a green salad
D- Cheeseburger Pie and either sprouts or cabbage, I haven't decided yet.

Good luck to everyone weighing in this morning. I hope that the scales are good to you

AThroneOfLies · 07/02/2022 06:51

1.5lb off for me this week, happy with that as I’ve not been eating very well with Covid (not carbs just not getting a lot of green veg in) and not drinking all the water.
Also happy as it takes me .5 of a lb away from the next stone bracket
Also also happy as it means I’ve lost all the weight I put on over Xmas from eating crap.

Sorry I’ve not been good at keeping up with the chat, have been reading sporadically and the enthusiasm is keeping me going!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 07/02/2022 07:10

Weighed myself. F**k. This is not easy, is it?

TheCurrywurstPrion · 07/02/2022 07:31

Thanks StuntNun and SweetPotato. I really want to make this work. I want to get down to a more healthy weight, but it has to be bearable as it needs to be permanent. Fingers crossed I will start to see some progress soon. I’m determined to give it a try for at least the eight weeks.

TheCurrywurstPrion · 07/02/2022 07:32

And I’m with you, Unexpected. I’m finding it tough too. I hope It’ll get easier.

Jezzballs2000 · 07/02/2022 07:37

Grrr 0.7 lb on. Not the end of the world but a bit demoralising especially after a brutal week. I have stayed on track in most ways but I did have booze and I also suspect it's time to dial back on the dairy as I know it can affect some people so I'll give it a go. I also need to up my water I've been rubbish all week. I haven't got my head around food for the week and my husband is back at home whixh means i now have to factor him into food (he is in a sling for another month at least is v limited at what he can do around the house). I feel stressed and miserable but also that i need to persevere- KOKO as they say.

B eggs and veg
L sausages and veg
D haddock and cauliflower and day's cream allocation!

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 07/02/2022 07:43

I can do LCBC happily 90% of the time @TheCurrywurstPrion but two (not particularly sinful) meals out in one week have nearly obliterated my losses for the whole of boot camp. Feeling down today, it's not feasible to live hermit-like just to get to a weight I'm happy with.

Never mind, will keep going.

BaconOmelette · 07/02/2022 07:48

Morning all.

0.8lbs off for me this week.

Disappointed that it’s not more but at least it’s still a loss. Onwards and downwards 😊

DollyDingleberry · 07/02/2022 07:54

3.4lbs off for me this week, I’m over the moon!

Also, I have the most supportive, brilliant family in the universe. It was my dads birthday yesterday so we went over for a family meal. They’d done cheese fondue (basically cream and cheese) with a load of low carb dipping stuff, a hot oil fondue for cooking meat and mum had made a keto cheesecake AND dads birthday cake was also keto.

I am the only one who eats low carb. They didn’t need to, I didn’t ask them to and I’d have happily adapted whatever we were eating. I love them so much.

I also had leftover cheesecake for breakfast this morning Grin

That's lovely!

Another 1.5 lbs off this morning which I'm really chuffed with, and 2cm off my waist which is great- nothing off the bum yet though which is typical! I may need to punch another hole in my belt this week which will be a big milestone, I've had it for years and never felt it was too big before!

Baystard · 07/02/2022 08:31

Morning everyone - another week of KOKO in store here. The scales haven't moved (I did get off, bang them on the floor a couple of times, and get back on but still no movement Grin ). I'm sure I'm less fat than last week though, put on newly laundered jeans this morning and even in their snug post-wash state they feel a tiny bit looser.

Your family sound amazing @DollyDingleberry !

B- coffee
L-maybe fasting, maybe a couple of avacados depending on how ripe they are.
D- pork and beef meatballs, tomato sauce, grated cheese and lots of very finely shredded raw cabbage.

Willlow · 07/02/2022 08:31

I have another pound off, if I wasn't aware of the dreaded week 3 and 4 I would be feeling a bit badly done to but I feel so much better in myself and I'm going to forget my weight, hide the scales until next Monday and carry on eating fab food!
@SweetPotatoDumpling that's so brilliant to hear, well done on your woosh!
@DollyDingleberry how lovely of your family to do that, it sounds absolutely delicious.
I think a lchf restaurant would be amazing.
Well done to all the losses this week!

BIWI · 07/02/2022 08:31

@TheCurrywurstPrion

One pound on. Had pizza and a doughnut at a party on Friday night, but otherwise I have been fairly conscientious

I know you want gentle encouragement, but I do have to take issue with this! We're on Bootcamp. Only just finished week 3. Pizza and doughnuts are not allowed. And they're not allowed because they are very, very carby and (in the case of doughnuts) very sweet! All things we're avoiding.

I’m currently menopausal and so far, I’ve not reached a point where I feel I’m recognizing hunger/fullness. I’m not sure whether it’s down to having had carbs one night

If your diet isn't low enough in carbs, or high enough in fat and protein, then you're not keeping your key hormones (insulin/grehlin/leptin) well balanced, so won't be getting the benefits of a low carb diet, i.e. weight loss and appetite suppression.

It does take time to reach this stage, which is why the first weeks of Bootcamp are strict - to help get there as soon as we can. Hunger, though, can also be caused by not eating enough fat, or protein, or simply not drinking enough water. It's also an emotional and habitual thing, so you need to consider that as well.

I lost quite significantly in the first week, but nothing since. I know weeks three and four are notorious for plateauing, but I was surprised to have done so in week two

You're not on the spreadsheet, so I don't know how much you lost, but it sounds like all is going well if you lost a significant amount in the first week! If you lost a lot, it's a little unrealistic to expect more loss the next week.

I’m going to carry on, but am worried this WOE might not work for me. If anyone has any gentle encouragement, I’d appreciate it

It will work for you, but only if you stick to the rules.

You've gained a pound. That's not a lot - and remember that your weight does vary quite naturally on a day-to-day basis.

You know that this WOE works, otherwise you wouldn't have lost so significantly in week 1!

@UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea

Why do you think you're living 'hermit-like'? What is it that you are/aren't eating that makes you feel like this? Low carbing is a much easier way to eat - and lose weight - than other diets, so I'm wondering what you are doing/missing?

What were the meals that you think obliterated your losses so far?

And what are you eating for the rest of the time? If you list out your food/drinks over the last few days let's see if there's anything we can help you with.

Bootcamp isn't easy - the clue is in the name! - but it is supposed to be easy to follow, so how can we help you?

@DollyDingleberry your post has made me smile this morning. Mumsnet seems to be full of people complaining about their families.
@TheCurrywurstPrion this does work and it is possible to maintain provided you don’t go too mad. When I tried it first I had a weekend away and put on 9lbs. It dropped off again pretty quickly. I’m a few pounds over my maintenance weight now so trying to be more strict. It is tough sometimes when you are out as so many treats and venues are carb heavy. However there are not many diets that you could have pizza and a doughnut and lose weight. My issue is I have a glass or two of wine and then I think sod it - life’s too short. The next morning on the scales and taking my bp I feel really annoyed with myself. I am menopausal too but on HRT. I know that if I went back to normal eating I will go back to my original weight or probably heavier. If I am not trying to lose I can allow myself some excursions . I have stayed the same this week because I went off piste a few times. This week I will be more focused. This thread really helps me.

BIWI · 07/02/2022 08:35

Quite coincidentally, this article appeared in my inbox this morning

Michael Mosley, in the Fast800 programme, calls this process 'flipping the metabolic switch', and it explains what happens when we cut down on carbohydrate. Worth a read.

Pound on , but I know why
I went a bit over light , and the weather was dreadful so we didn’t even manage a walk yesterday . A dash round Tesco doesn’t really count !
That chocolate mousse was delicious though ( from the dessert recipe thread )
Back to strict at least until Friday
Stayed alcohol free which is a big deal for me , and actually not as difficult as I thought it would be . I just must be in the right frame of mind at the moment , and will carry dry January on for 90 days ( counts on fingers )
Liking the look of that cheesecake @DollyDingleberry ( we went out for lunch on Saturday, one of the desserts was vegan kiwi cheesecake , made it very easy to say no thanks ! ) 🤢

BIWI · 07/02/2022 08:38

And - hopefully this will make you feel better! - if you've slipped off the wagon, the sudden weight gain as a result is not going to be fat. What you've done is to re-fill your body's glycogen stores.

So be super strict for the next few days, eat all the fat and drink all the water - and up your exercise to use up that stored glucose.
