Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

@ShagMeRiggins would you mind adding me too please? Can’t remember my password to login on the laptop, and can’t edit the spreadsheet on sheets.

Starting weight was 209lb last Monday. Today 204lb.

😊 thanks

I’m just back from a 5 mile hill walk, fuelled by what I call ’breakfast stew’. I make it overnight in the slow cooker, and it’s lovely. The recipe varies enormously depending on what is dying in the fridge, but it is always tasty. I will stick the core recipe in the recipe thread. However, the water issue meant I had to bare my bum in a windchill of minus 10, at the bottom of Lochnagar. This was not ideal, and very awkward given multiple layers of thermals. My bloody husband stood on look out chortling away at me. Off to the nearest Tesco now to shop properly - have made do with three rollitos (not ideal really, but they ARE low carb) and a handful of raw spinach with oil for lunch.

waspfig · 13/01/2020 13:50

Ok so far today (BC light) I've had:

Greek yoghurt with 4 raspberries
Scrambled egg with spinach, didn't eat the bread (in Sainsbury's cafe as baby needed early lunch)
Leftover minute steak
Handful of olives and feta
1.5L of water

I can't believe I don't feel hungry at all!

Planned meatloaf with creamy mushroom sauce and green veg for tea.

SilverSnowCake · 13/01/2020 13:52

Lunch was two hardboiled eggs, a teaspoon of walnut oil, a tablespoon of good quality French mayo and a handful of gem lettuce. 1 1/2l of water. Going to with to herbal teas for the rest of the day (another 1 1/2l)

Well done to those who started last week.

Must get photos taken tonight, and measure waist.

I'm aiming to get back into the dress I wore the night I met husband.

SilverSnowCake · 13/01/2020 13:53

^switch to herbal teas...

waspfig · 13/01/2020 13:55

So I've been shopping and picked up some dips to go with the hundreds of cucumbers I will be snacking on all week Grin

Any of these low carb enough? (In pics)

Also saw bare naked noodles on offer for £1.50 in Sainsbury's so stocked up.

@ilovecherries I'm definitely interested in your Breakfast Stew/

@StuntNun I love to post my food, but I feel like I'm talking to myself so I'm glad that I have your blessing. It makes me accountable to myself.

This is my second BC. I did well in May, but couldn't get my act together for the October one. I went from 11st 13lbs to 11st 3lbs. (157lbs). I was 157.6 on Thursday but I'm 159.6 today!! And I had been attempting low carb in the last few days. I think my problem was not going to bed on time, being too tired and having a carb melt down in the evening. So I'm prepared! My goal is a 10lb loss - to reach 150lbs. This is a comfortable size 12 on my 5ft 8 frame. Also I love the energy feel once I get into this WoE.

I do get 'carb flu' though, which I really hate. I have my lemon water ready, I've stock in the fridge, and I'm planning to follow the rules, to the letter. No way am I skipping any meals.

Thanks for the wedding soup recipe - I think I'll have a go at making it. @1Wildheartsease

So my big plan is;
Follow the rules
Water, water, water.
Bed on time.

Oh, and post my food on here. Grin

whitershadeofpale · 13/01/2020 14:11

I started BC a week early and weighed in this morning to find I’ve lost....
7lbs!

I’ve still got loads to lose but I’m delighted.

venusandmars · 13/01/2020 14:17

waspfig the 3rd one has 4.6g carb per 100g, so edging towards the top end of what's acceptable, and it can be easy to eat quite a lot.

I sometimes mix these kind of things with some good quality mayonnaise to up the fat% and reduce the carb%. I then use them as a dressing on salad leaves / spinach. That gives me more green veg to dip ratio (and better than dunking a carrot in it!)

TheClitterati · 13/01/2020 14:27

I got busy with work and nearly forgot to have lunch (breakfast was late but I just wasn't hungry) - leftover homeade coleslaw, an avocado with a blob of mayo & 2 tiny bacon strips leftover from breakfast.

on my 4th herbal tea.

Still need to measure waist.

Hellmans has 2% carb per 100 grams - I am assuming this is OK? It was the lowest I could find.

I got TEN smallish avocados from Morrisons earlier for £2.40 - the wonky ones. You just need to buy them a week in advance so they ripen. I also got a jar of Polish pickles with zero carbs/no sugar or sweeteners.

TheClitterati · 13/01/2020 14:31

are we going to have to POAS at any point to measure ketos? Or how will we know if/when that happens?

Teapotdespot · 13/01/2020 14:58

thrcliteratti having just dropped myself unceremoniously into ketosis... trust me, you’ll know Grin

I’ve just seen your appetite has dropped a bit, that’s a good sign you’re either in ketosis or getting there...

HouseTornado · 13/01/2020 15:01

Help! Menu panic...

I am going out for (pub) lunch on Saturday and I've checked the menu and it's wall to wall carbs. Chips, bread, pasta bakes etc etc...

The best dish I can find is salmon, chorizo, tomato and butter bean stew.

Any advice? Pick at it, and hope friend doesn't notice?

First world problem, I know, but I have form for self-sabotage...

truelove · 13/01/2020 15:02

Day off today. Played tennis this morning. Was feeling nauseous earlier but had a cottage cheese and egg salad for lunch (I’m veggie so it’s going to be mostly eggs and cheese in various combinations for BC) and feel better. Having a tea with almond milk - first try and it’s not too bad. Can’t face any more cream.

Good question re ketosis - I think I’ll just trust the process TheClitterati

Teapotdespot · 13/01/2020 15:04

housetornado is there steak?

KondoKonvert · 13/01/2020 15:06

Or burgers? Ask to swap the chips for extra salad and dressing then leave the bun?

HouseTornado · 13/01/2020 15:14

Teapot and Kondo I didn't think of that! I'll see what I can swap around...

Friend won't care, but I think she'll be bothered that I'm not drinking though...

ShagMeRiggins · 13/01/2020 15:19

Clitterati keto sticks are useless as you’ll be drinking so much water it will wash away all evidence of being in ketosis, even when you are. There’s a more scientific way of saying that but I’m not the person who sciences in this group. Just trust me.

ilovecherries I'm definitely interested in your Breakfast Stew/

I’m more interested in the visual of her wind-chilled arse Summery1

Yabadee I can add your weight but will need @AthelstaneTheUnready to add you as a participant.

HouseTornado why not upload a photo of the pub menu for us to pick at? I’d swerve the butter bean stew, to be honest.

Pathetically, I haven’t even managed a litre of water yet, but have realised I only need 3ltrs not 4, so yay me. DRINK, WOMAN!!!

Teapotdespot · 13/01/2020 15:22

Oooooh yes post the menu, it’s excellent practice for us noobs Grin

HouseTornado · 13/01/2020 15:25

Actually, just spotted aubergine and tomato ragu, bread on the side which I can leave.

Thanks for your help!

Teapotdespot · 13/01/2020 15:27

Hmm a ragu might have sugar and won’t be very high in fat I wouldn’t have thought?

A lot of pubs do half chickens?

HouseTornado · 13/01/2020 15:28

Ok, here's the menu...

www.bishoponthebridge.co.uk/food/main-menu

Do your worst!

Hagbeth · 13/01/2020 15:33

@Notwatchingtvtoday Thank you for your kind words. I’m sorry for your loss. There are no words for this. Flowers

For cravings I make keto fat balls, Google it and you will find a lot of weird and wonderful recipes. They’re very calorific so just for emergencies! Grin

TheClitterati · 13/01/2020 15:47

not even half way through water & I thought I was making a massive effort! More effort required.

thanks for heads up re no POS and all the snorting :)

Rayna37 · 13/01/2020 15:50

HouseTornado
I'd suggest salmon and prawn cocktail as a starter, leave the bread. Pate's OK but I'm not a fan of eating it without toast and find whatever my intentions, I eat some of it. Or the mushrooms without the brioche.
Mains: I'd go for a burger, extra salad no chips, and leave the bun. I have steak a lot when I'm out, swapping chips for green veg, but this only works if you can get nice green beans, tenderstem broccoli or similar - last thing you want is to be given a dish of peas, parsnips and carrots when what you wanted was FLGV, and this option doesn't look promising here.

I think accept it might not be 100% perfect and drink lots of water/sparkling water to compensate.
