Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

20 MIN VEG SOUP

Fry off 2 sliced leeks and a big head of broccoli in lots of butter.
Add some garlic and 2 pints stock.
Simmer for 15 mins.
Whizz smooth.
Serve with creme fraiche, or grated cheddar, or wee blobs of Boursin for fat content.
Here’s today’s version, with creme fraiche and Boursin, garnished with parsley- really tasty

B Babybel and creamy coffee
L Minced Lamb Keema with green beans, cucumber and red cabbage
D will be low carb sausages with cabbage stirfried with mushrooms, garlic and cream

Trying hard with water. Need to set a mini target to drink before leaving work I think as I was doing well during the day yesterday but still didn't manage the full amount by bedtime. I've attempted to improve today by bringing a full SodaStream bottle of fizzy water, which is 840ml by itself.

RobinHobb · 16/01/2020 14:55

Thank you
I'm not doing any hard core exercise, just a gentle jog, but found it hard. I'm on week 2, and finding it a lot harder suddenly... need to keep motivation, but I'm so far away from my normal weight I need to!

I don't know if I can make it without my daily cup of tea.... I may try tomorrow!

bibliomania · 16/01/2020 14:57

Thanks Nell. I was wondering what to do with my leeks tonight, and that will do nicely!

Teapotdespot · 16/01/2020 15:08

Does anyone have a good cauli, cheese and bacon soup recipe? If not I may need to go inventing Grin

Notlostjustexploring · 16/01/2020 15:09

I had a bit of a failed start at bootcamp. Had flu last week (actual, proper, chills, sweats, aches flu) and I've only really had my head in it as of yesterday.

I had the most delicious dinner yesterday - leftover defrosted Christmas ham, poached eggs and an avocado that was the perfect ripeness. Could have done with veg for the sake of veg content, but that combination was delicious! Not sure which veg would be best to add in future?

Today's win was the discovery that one of the many soft plays I take my kids to, today's will serve me a plate of scrambled eggs!!

Nell, I have all those ingredients, that soup looks like it would be worth a try!!!!

Montybojangles · 16/01/2020 15:33

@Teapotdespot I’ve made this soup before and it was lovely. Has cream cheese in and bacon added at the end...

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 16/01/2020 16:04

Waves to all Grin I've been lurking, as only found the courage to face the Scales of Shame yesterday after falling off the wagon in a major way over the holidays. I'm back up to nearly 13stone Blush Would be very grateful if someone could pop that on the spreadsheet for me?

Some amazing losses already, well done everyone. It's great to read all your progress and meal ideas. Big shop today, so off to do some prepping.

I've never eaten celeriac Blush

waspfig · 16/01/2020 16:28

@Notlostjustexploring I would recommend crispy kale (pan fried in oil and seasoned) on top of a dish with those textures. I also have some Xmas ham for this weekend - very excited to use it up with some other tasty foods.

So today Im having:

B 2 fried eggs, last of the meatloaf and handful of spinach in butter
L was out with kids and not at all hungry so had a cup of tea with milk and a pepperami
S prawns in garlic mayo and half an avocado when I returned home at 3
D burgers with leftover cauli and broccoli cheese with some green veg

I've lost 4 pounds as of this morning so very pleased so far! On previous weight watchers attempts I would have been lucky to lose 2 pounds and that would mean eating very little and feeling hungry all the time!

What a revelation this WOE is!

Teapotdespot · 16/01/2020 16:31

@OnceUponAMidnightBeery your weight right at this very second is my dream goal weight, so although it’s not where you want to be, some of us would kill to see your number on the scales Grin

pinboard · 16/01/2020 17:23

glad I'm not the only one who's a bit late starting (and not perfect, lunch was a tin of tuna but also a small salsa verde bean salad - ooops)

still, I have a piece of salmon and some pak Choi for later plus some hollandaise

I've not had a single piece of carb that everyone keeps offering me
(even though I've said I'm going low carb - perhaps folk think its' a challenge!)

CheddarGorgeous · 16/01/2020 17:42

I have a proper smug halo 😇 today. At work there were breakfast pastries, chocolate biscuits, a carb-tasting buffet lunch, clotted cream teas and chocolate caramel brownies and I didn't eat any of it Smile

CheddarGorgeous · 16/01/2020 17:43

*carb-tastic

Rshard · 16/01/2020 18:01

That soup looks lovely nellnorth! I’ll definitely be making it.

Well done for avoiding the carbs cheddar, I’m at university for two days next week and there are pastries throughout the day and usually sandwiches for lunch. Think I’ll take my own food

TheClitterati · 16/01/2020 18:07

Good work @CheddarGorgeous & everyone else who are just saying no!

I had to take some homemade pizza dough out of the freezer yesterday so my Morrison's marked down meat haul would fit in there. So dc had my delicious homemade pizza tonight. Does smell and feel damn good & I enjoyed working with the dough, but not too tempted by it. Nibbling on pork scratchings helped.

SayrraT · 16/01/2020 18:11

Home much earlier than usual so I'm settling down with a mug of chicken stock with cream and I'm going to watch the magic pill.

BTW, cream in the stock is delicious and a genius suggestion whoever it was!

m0therofdragons · 16/01/2020 18:15

I wanted to remind everyone that weightloss isn't about loss every week and a constant downward graph; there are bumps on the way but the aim is downwards overall. I started my weightloss journey last January with boot camp and here's the graph of my year...

Teapotdespot · 16/01/2020 18:26

I didn’t finish my soup at lunch, I was hungry, but after 3 spoons my appetite just completely vanished Confused

I’m having a cheese snack on the train home but I’m not massively hungry even now Confused this is a completely alien feeling and I’m not sure how I feel about it!

PseudoBadger · 16/01/2020 18:33

Off out for dinner in a bit, luckily it’s Turkish which IMO is THE best for low carb. Just need to avoid alcohol and baklava....

HouseTornado · 16/01/2020 18:36

Struggled today to manage my water intake - nowhere near what it should be, but back to back meetings and running around = no time.

I'll weight tomorrow as feeling very bloated tonight - and will drinks TONS tomorrow as working from home.

KondoKonvert · 16/01/2020 18:37

That's a really good visual, @m0therofdragons. Thanks for sharing!

Nearly at my water target for the day and I feel like I'm not running to the loo quite as much.

Excited for dinner tonight: piri piri chicken, halloumi, paprika celeriac chips and a load of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and probably a big dollop of Caesar dressing.

MonaChopsis · 16/01/2020 19:00

Belated thanks to ShagMeRiggins for updating the spreadsheet for me... Sorry I didn't see your notification yesterday!!

Good day today, scrambled eggs and butter fried mushrooms for breakfast, olives for lunch, and just polished off sausages, celeriac dauphin-whatsit and broccoli for dinner... Delish. And enough creamy celeriacy goodness that I can take some to work tomorrow for lunch - ideal.

NSV today was happily refusing all the biscuits and Welsh cakes at a meeting this morning!! Wasn't even tempted, normally I wouldn't be able to leave them alone.

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 16/01/2020 19:44

Hi, I seem to be doing ok so far. However, this morning in work, I could feel myself falling but not like fainting where you fall to the floor but falling forward -not sure if that makes sense. Any ideas.
I'd eaten 2 boiled eggs and green tea to drink for breakfast

Rayna37 · 16/01/2020 19:44

Food today:
Breakfast as previously described: truffle mushroom egg thing
NO SNACK!
Lunch was egg and cheese mayo on spinach tomato and cucumber with oil, plus Greek yogurt (my lunches are a bit repetitive, must work on that)
For dinner I made a curry using some chicken tikka marinated pieces from the back of the freezer, adding canned tomatoes, pepper, courgette and red onion, some yogurt, served on buttery cauli rice (I stock up on special trips to Iceland). Bit carby on the veg front but a tasty colourful nutritious meal!

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 16/01/2020 19:47

Thanks Teapot that does actually make me feel better! Just amazed how fast it went back on Blush

Still, onwards and downwards, sounds like you're doing brilliantly Grin I get the no hunger thing really quickly on this WOE too, it's a major effort to manage 3 meals per day for the first 2 weeks.

Can't wait to get some energy back though! Water water water... pee pee pee
