StuntNun · 13/01/2020 05:56

Welcome to the January 2020 Low Carb Bootcamp. I know some of you have already started eating low carb so please share your good experiences to give the rest of us some inspiration as we begin our weight loss journey.

Make sure you’ve read the ten Low Carb Bootcamp rules. There are some shopping list and meal plan suggestions on the preparation thread.

If you need recipe inspirations then there we have hundreds on the meat recipes thread, the poultry recipes thread, and the vegetarian recipes thread. Note that vegetarians may include small quantities of legumes, nuts and Quorn right from the start to make sure they’re getting enough protein. There is also thread of low carb products people have found in the shops.

We weigh in every Monday so add your starting weight to the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness. If you’re on a mobile or tablet and can’t get the spreadsheet to work then please post your entry on this thread and someone will add it for you. Some people choose to record their starting weight as 100 if they don’t want to share their actual weight. I also urge you to make a note of your waist measurement as sometimes we can lose inches without losing pounds on this way of eating. Some people like to have a goal pair of jeans or a dress that they can try on throughout Bootcamp so see how the fit improves over time. Others like to take ‘before’ photos that they can use for comparison later on.

If you have any questions or concerns then please do ask. Bootcamp has been running for nearly ten years so we have lots of expertise to share with you.

Oooh, prettybird I went to see the Snow Queen last week - keep an ear out for the solo violinist in the gypsy scene, she's amazing Grin

The Summer Princess really got on my nerves, and I can't work out why, except perhaps she danced like a bouncing great athlete. As a townfolk person you'd want to stand well back in case you got a broken nose from a whack with an arm.

BIWI · 16/01/2020 10:02

@CheddarGorgeous

Breakfast fail. Porridge with Greek yoghurt. DH thought he was being helpful by making it when I was in the shower and I didn't have the heart to reject it.

This is something we all have to learn to overcome! Stand up for what you know you should be eating and stop worrying about hurting other people's feelings. Why are our needs less important than theirs?!

AthelstaneTheUnready · 16/01/2020 10:03

Wow, clearly some natural low carbers on this bootcamp, cracking losses! Grin

I haven't weighed because it's that totm - am feeling like a big angry balloon of puff bloat so best not poke myself with a stick.

bibliomania · 16/01/2020 10:09

Last post about celeriac, I swear, but my, it must be high in fibre. TMI but wow, impressive results this morning.

m0therofdragons · 16/01/2020 10:13

I've lost 7lbs in 4 days - that's the flu diet rather than low carb so I don't advise it! No idea what I'll balance out at after the weekend as I'm assuming I'll see some gain once I'm eating more than yoghurt and cucumber.

MrsBertBibby · 16/01/2020 10:26

ALL the talk about celeriac plz.

My last camp we were rushing about trying to find them IIRC. They are the bomb and should be discussed daily!

bibliomania · 16/01/2020 10:29

The bomb is right.

Rayna37 · 16/01/2020 10:31

Great breakfast this morning; basically just eggs, cheese and mushrooms so I could have made an omelette but trying to have more variety so made a version of Leon's truffle mushrooms:

Two big mushrooms cooked in butter, swirl of truffle oil on top then I cracked two eggs on and a sprinkling of grated cheddar. I put the lid on the frying pan until the eggs were cooked. Loads of flavour and interesting textures.

pinboard · 16/01/2020 10:50

Is Thursday weigh in day?
Can I weigh in on MOndays or next Thurs as I've just started?

Today so far
2 rashers bacon, 2 fried eggs, black coffee
L: salad and cheese stick (30g)
D: cauli cheese with spinach

struggling for cold 'on the go to eat in the car' lunch ideas?
normally I'd have 2 pieces of fruit, cheese stick, nut pod (15g), side salad tub (undressed) OR if very cold (I'm in Scotland) a tomato soup and cheese and onion pasty from Greggs (oooof, clearly not good!)

I get v little time to prep food but maybe i could buy a soup flask and take some hot soup with me that is ok for this WOE?
I also like bacon and egg muffins so can batch cook some of those at the weekend?

prettybird · 16/01/2020 10:51

Athelstane - I'm really looking forward to it. I've deliberately didn't watch it when it was on BBC Scotland over Christmas (nor watched it on iPlayer) as I wanted to see it "fresh".

I'll no doubt watch it again on iPlayer once I've been Grin

SayrraT · 16/01/2020 10:59

pinboard weigh in day is usually Monday but some bcampers weigh daily or randomly.

I like daily weighing but it only works for people who don't get derailed if they gain.

pinboard · 16/01/2020 11:08

Thanks, SayrraT
I'll stick to Mondays then as I do get down if I gain

I'm going to look for recipes for veggie soups as I need lots of juicy 'crunch' if I'm not eating fruit for a bit

Twit · 16/01/2020 11:12

Hi all!
I've gained 1lb, so I suppose that means ovulation is imminent 😒.
Oh well, hopefully if I'm extra careful it won't be 4lbs like before. 😱😭
Anyway, I hope everyone's ok today.

Today's menu;
B. Tea
Bulletproof coffee and pork scratchings
D. Pork belly and some buttery spinach
T. Leftovers from dinner
3-4 litres of water.

1stMrsF · 16/01/2020 11:15

@pinboard My fave on the go foods are:
Avocado and hard-boiled eggs with a splodge of mayo
Smoked salmon and avocado, maybe with leaves
Frittata with roasted veg, spinach and feta or some combo, can add pancetta, mushrooms etc.or use leftover veg. I find I'm more likely to make this than a whole batch of egg muffins and it makes 2/3 meals
Mozzarella, tomato and avocado, could add salami
Ham or other cold meat spread with ff cream cheese

Yes, you could have soup if LCHF e.g. cauliflower & cheese, and you can still have you salad WITH an oily dressing

Notwatchingtvtoday · 16/01/2020 11:20

Morning, had a terrible nights sleep due to our dog barking, he had an operation on Monday and came home yesterday with a shaved bum and a cone to stop him getting to his stitches, he is definitely indigent and looks a bit like a baboon with a cone - I felt really sorry for him till he got me up 4 times! Anyway once all morning stuff was done I went back to bed for a couple of hours, which is something I never do, but I felt I could as I know how important sleep is to this woe 😀

I did weigh myself at 7 this morning and I am 3lbs down since Monday, I am always amazed that you eat all this lovely food and as long as you don’t cheat and drink loads of water you loose weight.

However a word of warning to new boot campers, you cannot cheat, there are rules for a reason, as any cheats will go straight to the scales. It is almost like that tiny bit of carb you slip in, waits in a corner of your stomach and grabs any fat you eat, it then soaks up the fat like a sponge and turns it into lbs on the scales. But no carbs and the lovely fats that you eat seem to melt the pounds away.

If any of you have an Instapot, I made a fab chicken in it last night. I basically bunged in the pot an onion, some ground ginger, cumin & coriander, a couple of cardamom pods and some fresh coriander. I then put in a large whole fresh chicken, half a can of coconut milk and 150ml of chicken stock. No browning or faf I just chucked it all in. Put the lid on and cooked for 40 mins on high pressure, let the pressure release naturally for about 15 mins and then released the rest manually. It was delicious I served it with some left over cabbage and Celaric mash that I bunged in a wok and heated up together . Really tasty and filling. I’m sure you would get the same result in a casserole but would take much longer. The best bit is I now have loads of tasty chicken and the broth for eating over the next couple of days. So tonight I’m going to have it again and just need to cook a FLGV .

So for today

B total Greek yogurt, 2 coffees each with a Tsp double cream
L buttery scrambled eggs, avocado and green salad
D instapot chicken, FLGV and Celaric mash
Snack 2 M&S Rollitos, cucumber with some cream cheese
3 litres of water, herbal teas, I really like teapig Liquorice and peppermint

TheClitterati · 16/01/2020 11:24

I can't wait to buy a celeriac - I am already a fan but the DC don't like it so usually when I buy them not much happens with them. Not any more.

Thanks for the info on chia seeds - I feel fantastic when I've eaten them in the past (don't know if any of you have read "Born To Run" but they are pretty amazing seeds). I look forward to having some after the first couple of weeks.

@Rayna37 thanks for the tips on family LC'ing. That book looks to be out of print but I've found a good family cook book co-authored by Dr Tim Noakes who is the South African sued by the Govt dieticians in The Mighty Pill. My 2 eat opposite from each other - one is pescaterian, the other a carnivore and carbs is the only place they agree (well salad too). So hope to get some good ideas from that book expecially for breakfasts/lunches. DD1 is 12 and at high school and is starting to lecture me come up with "this is healthy and that is not" ideas mostly from You Tube & her friends - so I wonder if she could watch the Magic Pill? I am cautious as I've always made a point of NEVER talking about my body negatively, or dieting, or bad food or anything like that around them - we talk about healthy choices, healthy portions etc, but I can see both my girls (12 & 8) are in the grip of carbs. Lets face it most kids are. Most humans are. :(

(my spell check on MN seems to have left the building)

Busy moring so Lidl greek yog for breakfast & a creamy coffee.

Period started today and I'm so happy I had no carb cravings in the run up and feel fine today. I have been told that PMT cravings are related to a drop in blood sugar - I guess my blood sugar is already low so there was no drop = no cravings.

TheClitterati · 16/01/2020 11:27

@Notwatchingtvtoday that chicken sounds fab - any chance you could add that to the chicken LC recipe thread as I know I would like to try making that and I won't be able to find your recipe here in a few days weeks time.

TheClitterati · 16/01/2020 11:29

@pinboard please let me know if you find a good veggie soup recipe. I work from home and usually have a big pot of soup on the go that I eat for easy lunches all week. Missing that a bit.

CheddarGorgeous · 16/01/2020 11:38

Noted @BIWI.

I work in such a sugar-laden environment. Am currently in a two hour meeting inches away shitloads of chocolate biscuits. Untouched by me so far. Why undo all the good work so far (porridge excepted).

Notwatchingtvtoday · 16/01/2020 11:54

I have put the instapot chicken recipe on the recipe thread called it
No FAF Instapot Chicken
Also forgot that I added some chopped fresh ginger, so have added that in.

Rayna37 · 16/01/2020 12:23

TheClitterati Raising Superheroes is a Tim Noakes book too but now you mention it, I think it's possible we ordered it to be shipped over from South Africa #lowcarbwanker Perhaps BIWI should bring a stash!

Reading the thread, I realised I have never made celeriac dauphinoise so will make that a plan for the weekend hopefully.

TheClitterati · 16/01/2020 12:39

thank you Notwatching - I don't have an instapot but I am pretty handy with my old school pressure cooker so I will try it with that.

DiscontentedWoman · 16/01/2020 12:42

Tom Noakes was interviewed on The Food Programme, a 3 part series called Eat to Run. Worth a listen - part 3 is the low carb one, a follow-up 2 years after the first 2. You can skip parts 1 & 2 without losing any info really Smile

m0therofdragons · 16/01/2020 13:09

@pinboard I weigh most days but haven't done since Sunday until today but haven't eaten due to flu so I was curious. I'd had Christmas Day on Saturday with all the trimmings with my parents as they were on holiday in December. We ate so much it was ridiculous (mum is an amazing cook!). I generally record Mondays as confirmed loss for the week but I like the idea of an average over the week.

TheClitterati · 16/01/2020 13:33

DiscontentedWoman listening to that now thanks
